Without insulting the Eagles efforts this year, overacheving to make the finals with basically a talentless squad in terms of some of the others sides that didn't make the 8 (Hawthorn, Bulldogs Richmond etc) it does beg the question.
Were West Coast the worst finals team, if not ever, but for a long time. Frankly if it wasn't for Geelong's pathetic late season capitulation and the Bulldogs and Hawthorn, grossly underacheving the Eagles really deserved to finish 10th this year. Sure they won most of their 'home' games but really their away form was pathetic, were extremely lucky to beat wooden spooner Carlton and an fatigued and stuffed Roos outfit in Canberra. They are an extremely mediocre side I feel, and I hope no one takes this the wrong way, I get the feeling it is kind of insulting and embarrising that the Eagles made the finals. Now I'm not the kind of guy to have a beef against any side, (generally the interstate club I dislike the most is Sydney) but gee whiz ... this year 2002 featured probably the worst standard of football and inconsistent since the AFL was formed in 1990 from the VFL. (I mean in most other years Collingwood wouldn't have made the top 4, let alone the Grand final)
If the clubs I've mentioned play to their full potential (Hawthorn, and Bulldogs) then a couple of sides in this year's 8 will not make it again next year, Kangaroos, probably and certainly West Coast will be in lower half the ladder, I just can't take them seriously as a finals contender. That game at Optus Oval, Carlton played pretty poor I felt, yet still managed to nearly win the game.
If it wasn't for the efforts of Cousins, Judd and Jakovich, boy the Weagles will would be stuffed.
If anyone disagrees with me, I would like them to actually suggest teams which they think were worse finalists than WCE this year.

Port & Sydney in 1999 would be close, or Brisbane in 1997 qualifying with 10.5 wins

Brisbane qualified in 1995 with 10 wins. Though they were in hot form when they did qualify and played well in their only final.

I thought Sydney 2001 were worse than Sydney 1999, even though their win loss record and percentage says they were better.

Fitzroy of 1916 ... I can't believe you never knew Mighty Saint. And DTB, Fitzroy only just missed out on the minor premiership in 1944 ... They were the average premiership side.

In 1916 Fitzroy won their first 2 games, and drew Round 3 to give them 10 points after 3 rounds. They then amazingly lost their last 9 games to make them 1916 wooden spooners. They went on to win 3 finals to claim themselves the winners of the 1916 premiership cup.

This will really show up my lack of historical football knowledge, but how did Fitzroy get into the finals if they finished with the spoon?

Due to WW1, only 4 teams competed that year ... By memory they were:

Richmond, Collingwood, Carlton and Fitzroy! (someone correct me)

i can understand your position in this post. if i was to only watching the eagles away games this year i'd be asking that as well.

the truth is they are not a silky skilful side. but they are certainly a tough unit and played the year with passion.

basically a talentless squad in terms of some of the others sides that didn't make the 8 (Hawthorn, Bulldogs Richmond etc)...
talentless (still just your opinion) or not the fact remains that we were able to finish above 8 other teams and deserved our final. yeah sure we could have hundreds of player V player polls. it would address the individual worth of each player but in the end it was a spread of players lifting that got us were we finished.

...but really their away form was pathetic...
yup it was pretty bad. don't forget we travel every second week. our away games are interstate games. there are 10 teams out there who have never had to do this and as a result it is we do not know how they would perform constantly being on the road. don't forget that at home we beat brisbane, adelaide, collingwood, north melbourne, and the dons.

They are an extremely mediocre side...
For half (away games) yes. but once again i'll ask how many of the eagles games did you watch.

...insulting and embarrising that the Eagles made the finals.
now this one has got me. embarrassing? well sides like geelong, hawthorn and the doggies have a right to be embarrassed by their performances that stoped them getting a final. insulting???? to whom?

If it wasn't for the efforts of Cousins, Judd and Jakovich, boy the Weagles will would be stuffed.
Actually if it was just Cousins, Judd and Jak then we would be stuffed. It was more to do with the fact that our younger players stood up. Kerr, Hunter, Green, Wooden, Chambers, Lynch all improved dramatically.

They were certainly the worst performers of the top eight. add to that the fact that they can't play away from home and it all adds up to a finals flogging. Worse team ever... don't know about that. They were the worst team of the top eight but still better than the eight below them.

so who instead of the eagles "deserved" the eighth position?

Nice Troll.

Obviously they were the worst finals team this year, as they finished 8th. If Hawthorn, Richmond, Geelong, Bulldogs etc. were better over the whole season they would have made the finals.

Worst finals team ever? - Idiot. Thats not even worth dignifying with an answer.

Are Carlton the worst wooden spooners ever?

WORST FINALS TEAMS SINCE 1992

1992 - St Kilda
1993 - Westcoast
1994 - Collingwood
1995 - Brisbane
1996 - Hawthorn
1997 - Brisbane
1998 - Westcoast
1999 - Port Adelaide
2000 - Hawthorn
2001 - Adelaide
2002 - Wesctoast

Pretty obvious ... The teams who just made the finals were pretty much rated worst finals side.

Port of 99, Brisbane of 95 or WCE of 2002 would be the worst!

I nearly made the same mistake, but it goes vertically.

Aug 26 and Sept 2, Carlton played Fitzroy twice in a row with the latter being the GF.

I was about to dignify your post with a decent response, because parts of your post do have some merit, but once I read your claim that we have a "talentless" squad, I decided against feeding this troll.
