Gave my R1 22 a redo with the news about Redden and Sheppard. Also added my WAFL team for good measure. (Sidenote: Kieran Hug will almost definitely be a starter imo.)

Isn’t that a setup we often roll with?

Yeah we did this year and we almost always got pantsed when we did. Way too tall (we also had Brander on a wing for alot of it too)

There's no way that forward line can apply enough pressure to hold the ball in and not see it waltzed out.

The 2nd ruck dilemma is still to be solved

Sheed - probably will play rd1 but I'd rock the boat early with a senior player and his defensive work was horrid last year
Sheppard - retirement?
Redden - injured

Notes and thoughts:
Nelson brings a run with option. He also looks to take the game on. Expecting him to have a solid season
Still no room for Waterman
Who are the other 2 not vaccinated??? One spot could change but could 3??
Will McGovern be right early in the season - I wouldn't rush him back

Think you missed SPS, want him in main team or wafl rnd 1?
Was just thinking I’d missed him before! He could probably go either way depending on his preseason, I’d have him fighting with Withers/Clark/Petch for those bench spots. Would prefer we start him in the seniors as I reckon he’s a fair confidence player.

My ideal round 1 team would be this (also assuming no Shep/Redden)

Witherden - Barrass - Cole
Hurn - McGovern - Rotham
Shuey - Clark - Gaff
Rioli - Darling - SPS
Allen - Kennedy - Ryan

Naitanui - Kelly - Yeo

Duggan - Cripps - Sheed - B.Williams

Sub: Petruccelle

Emerg: H.Edwards, L.Edwards, C.Chesser

Think thats a pretty dynamic team so can handle the added ruck of Williams. If Sheed is spudding - no issues dropping him for Luke. SPS to rotate through central midfield - I also want Clark in there round 1 first bounce. I never want injuries but I think Harry will be very unlucky not be in the team next year, really rate him.

You'd have to think the club sees Clark as best 22 - even clubs in full premiership mode (rather than what I would term us - speculative premiership mode) don't normally go down the 24-year-old route just to have them as depth. Redden's expected absence for the start of the season opens at least one spot.

Chesser should play a decent amount of games. Maybe a dozen or so. He's pretty big bodied for a draftee. Beyond Redden's absence, most of us felt we were a midfielder short on the rotation. Even if the club doesn't think we need another midfield in the 22, the bottom couple of mids each week are vulnerable so there are spots up for grabs of which Chesser will be in that mix. Obviously his draft profile also said half back flanker, but when you see his highlights and his size, he could get experience in any third of the ground in 2022 and 2023, although that isn't really Simmo's coaching philosophy (I'm a Simmo fan but would like him to show a little more flexibility on player roles - at least 2-3 guys each weekend). Hopefully the club sees Chess' long term future in the middle third.

I'd like to see the club have at least one more month(ish) long stint of seeing how Duggan goes on the wing. 100% agree it didn't work in 2021. But I'd like to see him have another go. If it doesn't work this time, I'd probably be comfortable calling time on that experiment. I just think we'd be a lot stronger 22 if he can make it a midfielder.

One thing I would like to not see in 2022 is Oscar the permanent second ruckman. If we play a game with no specialist backup ruckman, please, please rotate the duties. I know it's not really the done thing but gee Oscar was banged up by seasons end. If Williams has improved enough to be a genuine second ruck that is a fine as well - we can use the time when Williams is in the forward line to spell Oscar, JK and JD.

The ruck/key forward game time split to me should be either
a) NicNat 2/3 ruck, 1/3 bench. Williams 1/3 ruck, 1/3 fwd, 1/3 bench. JD, Allen and JK 5/6 fwd, 1/6 bench - that equates to about 2 x 8-10 min spells on the bench each. 90% of the game we have 3 key forwards. 2 key forwards for the small remainder. This is a tall team which means Waterman would struggle to get a run with this selection.
b) NicNat 2/3 ruck, 1/3 bench. JD, Gov, OA splitting 1/3 ruck between them. Would mean are generally 50/50 for when we have 2 key forwards or 3. Waterman could switch between third tall forward (think Gunston 2012) or play as a tall wingman.

For mine, I think option b gives us a bit more flexibility and allows us for a bit more run. This decision essentially comes down to a pre-season battle between Waterman and Williams for that final tall selection and the tactic we take around our rucks. Will be interesting to see if the club sees it the same way. I didn't think it really worked when both played, as well as OA, JK and JD.

I think most of us will be livid if we go down OA the main second ruck with minimal support and he is banged up completely again by the last third of the season.

I'm hoping we run out with a more versatile 22 next year, with more players (SPS, Rioli, Duggan, Chesser) capable of rolling through the midfield at times.

Hurn - Gov - Cole
Duggan - Barrass - Foley
Gaff - Kelly - SPS
Cripps - Darling - Rioli
Allen - Kennedy - Ryan
Naitanui - Shuey - Yeo
Int: Clark/Sheed - BWilliams - Petrucelle - Chesser

This'd mean there's only one spot between Redden, Sheed & Clark. With Redden likely out, I'd love to see Clark get a go Rd1 as we really need another hard-tackling midfielder.

Could drop Petch for Sheed instead. But I reckon that Petch has had a good year as a consistently dangerous forward option, panned way too much on this board. And if we're not pegging Willie or Samo as permanent forwards (please, please let's not) then we're in much greater need of another forward.

Not having Rotham or Hedwards is a tough call, but we need to add a bit of flair from the back half and hopefully Chesser gets some AFL experience early on. If we need to go taller at any point for match-ups, this is an easy swap.

He is training now, most over talked injury in history. He will be well and truly ready to go by pre season.

H.Edwards - Barrass - Duggan
Hurn - Gov - Foley
Gaff - Yeo - SPS
Cripps - Darling - Rioli
Allen - Kennedy - Ryan
Naitanui - Shuey - Kelly
Int: L.Edwards - Sheed - BWilliams - Rotham

Very unsure about Williams, don't really want Oscar rucking but if we do decide to move the ball quicker I don't really want 3 Key Forwards running into each other either. Oscar may just get stuck having to pinch hit the ruck.

Witherden is a very nice attacking option by foot but hes a bigger liability than even Tom Cole defensively. Does he have the capacity to play any where else other than down back?

The rest of the backline just has to cover him so he can play at his damaging best, like they did with Jetta. His skillset is too different from the rest of our backline to not play him.

I agree but I don't think the comparison is apt, Jetta could mark a man in transition with his athleticism but Witherden can barely go with anyone back to goals on a turnover. Will require a lot more work structuring up for Witherden than we did for Jetta

Based on the WAFL grand final and Clark’s season, I cannot recall an inside mid that West Coast have drafted in the last decade that was more ready to play.

Surely Clark has to be played in R1.

I never want to see any more than 1 of Gaff, Sheed and Kelly in the middle for centre bounces. Add NicNat and we will have at least 3 inside mids to get the ball to our gun forwards.

Chesser has hardly got on the park in the last 2 years and will not have a full preseason so we should temper expectations for anything too soon.

Out of our 18 year olds, I can see Hough getting a game if Cripps say doesn’t want to go into a hub or we get injuries. He actually knows how to play hff.
