For those that dont know BMI stands for Body Mass Index, and it is calculated by dividing a person's weight by the square of their height in metres.

IE, a person who is 190 cm and 85 kg is worked out by finding [85/(1.9 x 1.9)]

And in my state of boredom the other night I went through the Eagles list according the Daily Telegraphs Official Season Guide and thought I'd do each players BMI's and just for informations sake, this is how it turned out:

just a note for those who don't know how it works, 25 is considered perfect (note who is 24.99 - seems he is Mr. Perfect at the moment) while anything above is overweight and anything below is underweight. Although anything above 30 is considered severely overweight and under 20 is considered severely underweight.

David Sierakowski 28.45
Troy Wilson 27.99
Quinten Lynch 27.92
Glen Jakovich 26.84
Peter Matera 26.57
Ashley McIntosh 26.31
Daniel Chick 26.27
Phil Matera 25.99
Drew Banfield 25.97
Chad Morrison 25.97
Josh Wooden 25.96
David Wirrpunda 25.72
Chad Fletcher 25.56
Paul Johnson 25.25
Zac Beeck 25.25 rookie
Trent Carroll 25.21
Andrew Embley 25.20
David Haynes 25.18
Michael Collica 25.10
Aaron Edwards 25.10 rookie
Michael Gardiner 24.99
Ashley Sampi 24.89
Jeremy Humm 24.69
Travis Gaspar 24.46
Darren Glass 24.41
Phil Read 24.38
Adam Hunter 24.37
Ben Cousins 24.34
Kasey Green 24.28
Dean Cox 24.26
Daniel Kerr 24.25
Andrew McDougall 24.20
Rowan Jones 24.02
Michael Braun 23.78
Chris Judd 23.76
Clancy Rudeforth 23.76 rookie
Mark Seaby 23.72
Ashley Hansen 23.68
Callum Chambers 23.29
Damien Adkins 23.14
Brent Staker 23.11
Kane Munro 22.94
Adam Selwood 22.91
Mark Nicoski 21.10 rookie

Really no use to this I know :p but thought I'd give people the free info.

Not many surpises but I think most would've though McDougall would be a lot lower.

That's quite fascinating, although personally I don't have much faith in the BMI system. (Case in point, I'm normal. Not severly underweight at that thing says). We had a BMI table on our counter at work for awhile, and some of the readings it was giving were a joke. It doesn't take into account fat v muscle, or the cliched 'big bones'.

The rather simplistic way I've always looked at it, is that a player at his playing weight should be 100 cm more than he is kg. (ie, a 180cm player should weight 80kg and so on.) Mind you that's a massive generalisation too, ahh well. It at least gives a rough indication.

25 is pretty much an arbitrary figure, and as EF says doesn't account for muscle mass. I'd expect most average height AFL players nowadays to be around 26-28.

Having said that, we need more hulk's in the side
ala Wilson, Lynch, Siera :D

Exactly

Doesnt factor in the fact that muscle weighs more than fat, nor is there a factor for fat %

I thought this was dismissed as quack medicine years ago

Still used as a basis for fitness testing in the defence forces (at least it was 5 years ago when I was in)

This analysis is crap because it says I'm a fatso. But then, so is Phil Matera.

I saw Nicoski play really well for Subi against West Perth last week, but he may struggle to make it at AFL level for similar reasons to Munro - too skinny. Would be a pity though, footy's always been for people of all shapes and sizes, eg Libba.

It would be terrible if everyone had to have a BMI like Trent Croad's - especially if they played like him.

His weight is out of date. When he got drafted he was 73kg, and since the Eagles have put him on weights and training programs he has gone up to about 80kg. I think he will fill out easily.
