New Jumper, New Logo, New Coach, New Gameplan, New Skill level

Are the eagles for real ? The new guernseys looked like fitzroy had returned but they played too badly to be fitzroy.

How can tou play 3 quarters without a goal (they were unlucky - they should have had at least one)

Anyway thanks Ken, you created the vacancy for our new coach. I hope the football lesson went som way to repaying you.

I hope I'm not being too quick off the mark, but re: Hawthorn. Can you win a flag with a rookie coach ?

PS The eagles new gameplan is to gain posession by having a crowded half back line, get the ball purely by outnumbering the opposition by 6 to 3, passing it around, nearly run into each other, hopefully get clear but kick it to a forward who hhs no chance because due to flooding the backline your forwards are outnumbered.

PS Eagles fans. It's a bit early (you will get better) to tell, but who is most negative, Judge or MM ?

I know, embarrassing isn't it?

We've all expected to have an ordinary year, but last night was beyond a joke!

In our defense though, Hawthorn did have a lot more reasons to win. A bit of pride, revenge against their deserting coach, plus the money and members they'd gain.
And we never play well in pre-season. I think last year we lost to Richmond(!) by 70+ points, before winning the first 7 games of the H & A season, and sitting top of the ladder. Typically, we blow all pre-season games.

McKenna, McIntosh, Braun, Gehrig, Banfield, Lewis are still out BTW.

So don't count us out just yet!

Sorry to have to disapoint you EagleFan, but Judge was actually caoching pretty positive for him! Jakovich at CHF and Wirrupunda in a pocket A forward pocket!!!.
Still the Mighty Hawkers did have a reason to win as we would like to increase the memberrship again and the pre-season in the past has proven that if you have sucsess their it can boost numbers by a few to several thousand. Btw too no Hay/Lord/Treleven/Dixon so we had a few out too! But it is very rare thing in todays football to EVER field your strongest possible side.
Can we win the flag with a rookie coach? Who knows I rekon a possie between 4th and 6th place is a realistic aim for this year butnext year.........bring it on!!!

Not a huge KJ fan? Me neither. Over here we call him the 'invisible coach' because seems so unwilling to appear as the WC coach in public (although given Sundays game....). Anyway you Hawks can have him back soon. He's only a fill-in till Whoosha comes home!

BTW/ You won't win the flag- sorry.
My money's still on Brisbane and Essendon.

to eagle fan- i have an eagles supporter freind at work (well a bunch of 'em actually) but he said that the new eagles guernsey was market tested on only under 12's, because they are the major buyers of "team jumpers". Have you haerd that b4???
Eventhough im NOT an eagles fan- it pisses me off that the club need to change their strip. Although they dont have the history of the older clubs- its a damn good time to start. Having won two flags in that strip, should mean something.I think you addressed this in an earlier post, but dont you think its a decision the club (and its members) should come to, together ???? Rather than just forcing it on the fans ????
?

Quite right Arch. I am disgusted that's it's about making money out of kiddies.

I think the eagles shirt looks like they ran over some eagle and there is blood every where.

Even though eagles is a relatively young club as opposed to say Carlton or Essendon, what is wrong with 'tradition'.

Now get back to work Arch.

Absolutly.
Like I said before, West Coast members have no influence in what goes on at the club. This fact really hit me when watching 'Year of the Dogs' a couple of weeks ago. Their members were individually asked whether they wanted a merger, and if so, who with. And someone (Dan24?) was talking about how they voted on the MCG-Colonial situation. Our admin has no need to treat their members well, because when some leave, others from the 12,000 waiting list will take their places. Consequently, we are treated like dirt.

Regarding that nightmare of a new jumper design, they asked Primary School kids in the surrounding suburbs which they preferred from a number of samples. Kids might be able to pick the most colourful and bright design, but they have no notion of tradition, or the requirements of a football jumper (I think simplicity is the key). [In fact, did you know that our Melbourne manager -or whatever- actually bragged in your press that we are not "bogged down by tradition"? Isn't it tragic? Then our CEO said they'd had a hugely positive response from most people, other than a few who "don't like change". Talk about patronising.]

The worst part of the 'new look' is that so many sensible Eagles supporters have been sucked in to the marketing ploy. They just can't see past the fact that it's Jakovich and Cousins wearing the things, to realise just how ludicrous they are! The away jumpers (the rainbow one) have actually sold out over here.

So, I guess you could say I'm more than pissed off at the Eagles admin about their actions over the off season, but I still love my team. I'll still be there at every game, cheering them on, and arguing for them on AFL forums, but I'm not afraid to criticise those people killing my club and it's small but proud (and successful) history.

BTW/ Don't little kids pick their noses and eat dirt and bugs? Hardly who'd you want to decide the future of the club.

Doesnt matter what the eagles wear, they could be butt naked wouldnt make any difference with Ken Judge as coach.
Judge is a dud of the highest quality which is a shame cos I like the eagles as a team.
The eagles are going to miss the finals for the first time for a while, and it wouldnt surprise me if Carlton were to win a flag in the next year or so if Worsfold was lured back home to replace Judge

As a Hawthorn fan, I have mixed feelings on Judge. The parting of the ways will be good for both him and us. We have had some excellent recruiting recently. Whether that was all his area I'm not sure.

What did finally do it for a lot of Hawks fans when Ken basically turned round and said 'what do you expect with some of the dud players here' not taking any responsibility for the lack of skill level. Some supporters do believe that and were sorry to see him go.

Sunday night was obviously the players 'statement'. Let's see if they can motivate like that every week

It does look like you 'farmed' out bluey to carlton for experience. I'm so glad it wasn't us as we wouldn't have wanted to lose a second coach to the eagles

Mick Malthouse was shown in the crowd during the telecast of the Hawks-Eagles game. He must have had some mixed emotions - on the one hand he was probably wondering what his old side has come to, and maybe happy to have moved on when he did. On the other hand he was probably alarmed at the prospect of facing the Hawks in round one on that performance!

I'm one of the few that never wanted KJ, and can't wait for Whoosha to come home. (he will be an excellent coach).

With regards to MM, he's overrated. I think I've said this before, but which half-decent coach wouldn't have done well with the team we had in the early '90s. Still sorry to see to him go though.

In the Eagles website, fans think the new guernseys are jinxed, especially the 'fitzroy' one.
Do you think there is truth in that the old eagles guernsey might have given been more imposing over opposition players, given the eagles reputation earlier in the decade. Perhaps teams will play better against the eagles this year. It would help to explain Hawthorn's dominance for three quarters Unlike most alternate guernseys this one has no similarity at all to the previous one.

Part of this topic was "can Hawthorn win the flag with a rookie coach".
No would be my answer.. hard to judge(pardon the pun) the new coach without much track form but he doesnt appear anything special.
Hawthorn have some good young players ie Croad,Thompson etc but depend heavily on Crawford for just about everything that happens on the field, also they dont have much depth so they would need to have a injury free season..my prediction maybe finsishing seventh would be a good result.

I take your point Barney, I'm just hoping for a little luck this year to tip us into the top four. But on depth we may be going in the right direction. For example we have at least Eight good big men who can fill the FF, CHF, CHB, FB and Ruck positions. They are also young which leaves room under our salary cap. Contrast with three years ago when our backup Ruckman was also CHF (Holland). We have a few decent midfielders also.
On the salary cap. there are clubs with worse depth than Hawthorn who are right on the salary cap. If Hawthorn can 'find' a couple of competitive players each season they should make the finals for a few years to come. Whether we can convert that to a premiership depends on Luck, Motivation, application etc.

Being a young side we don't seem to play well in the wetter conditions or winter months. I think this year the early season may help that, especially if it is relatively dry.If we made the finals they would come in a month where we have won five in a row, two years running

I think Crawford's going to find the 2000 season a tough one. The added attention, as well as the 'Brownlow Curse', could see him have a few problems.
No Crawf, no Hawth, and therefore no flag.

Hey Pes- how often do you come to our forum? Do you have a username?

That's OK, Eagle fan, but crawford spent the entire game on sunday in a pocket. Our other Midfielders did the trick

Our biggest problem last year was having enough forward targets and delivering to them effectively.

I see signs that this is happening. Ironically the attacking style also meant a great defence (0 goals in three quarters is unprcedented, even in ansett cup)

PS there was a little bad luck involved, as eagles should have had at least one goal in that time

If you criticise the Hawthorn performance, you are saying that the Eagles were ****.

For what purpose? Send shivers down the spine of Eagles supporters who had blocked out that guernsey?
