Do you reckon one of your shitty key forwards will break through that magical 25 goal mark in 2018?

My father was quite vocal on matters like this. His catch phrase was “if I wanted to hear from an arseh*le - then I’d fart”

Now piss off to the corner you belong

The web is based on coralling rather than tackling

We all seem sick of it.
But the web was causing opponent teams issues in there forward line, where our backmen were guarding space rather than man on man. And because of this made it easier for the likes of Gov to read the play and take the intercept mark. We should build on that, the whole corralling crap is another issue that needs to be addressed. But the web like game plan when in our back half + Gov, Barrass and Yeo would make it hard for any forward line.

The same web that flat out doesnt work on the wide spaces of the mcg

Where the gf is played

To a degree, I think you're right (about the web being based on corralling rather than tackling).

Another way to look at it is in NFL terms- blitzing versus prevent defence. I used to play Madden on easy mode and just blitz everyone all the time to get record sack numbers because that was much more entertaining... but it doesn't work like that in real life. If you blitz too hard, too predictably, your secondary gets burned deep or with little screen passes after the defence has overcommitted.

But if you just play prevent defence all game long, you get killed in the run game and little underneath passes. The defence never gets off the field and is fatigued by the 4th quarter. Anyone seeing a coincidence with our style of play here?

But clearly there's a whole spectrum in between those two extremes and mixing it up is key.

Now, the analogy falls down to a degree as Aussie Rules is so much more fluid than NFL and you don't line up in a deliberate play and a deliberate formation for each passage of play - so much more read and react involved around general structures in real footy. It's harder to vary each play as specifically as in NFL, but you probably get the point.

I think we've improved our 'pass rush' with our list changes this summer, so hopefully we're more equipped to play a bit more aggressive and get our defence off the field a bit more in 2018. But our strength is still our secondary, so I don't expect a major change in game plan.

There was such a big change in how we played 2015 vs 2017 in transition from defence.

In 2015 our half backs shared a lot more of the running load by carrying the ball out of the defence. Even a 10m dash before off loading a kick makes a big difference in field position at the other end of the ground. We fell in love with Sheppingham as they got stops and attacked positively, often managing to run the ball all the way out to the first red zone with handball and overlap running. Having our first kick from between back of the square to almost the centre of the ground really laid the field position for our subsequent kick, to i50, to be a deeper entry. With a deep entry our zone could stack up behind the ball and we generated a lot of repeat entries.

Our midfielders, in general, were poor over head and often we needed a Darling or JJK to provide the target for the second kick. When our transition worked well we got a lot of easy goals out the back for Cripps, Hill et al. If we got held up we forced a stoppage which got our tall timber back in place in the forward structure and our zone established to rebound back into our tall targets.

In 2017 our half backs ran and carried the ball a very minimal amount and kicked early almost exclusively. This 10-20m deficit we gave up at the start of our possession chain had a knock on effect. Our mids are still rubbish overhead so our tall target for the second kick was dragged much higher up the ground. Our next kick to our Cripps/Hill type left them outside of goal scoring range so our Joe the Goose goals dried up significantly. Our stoppages were in a significantly less dangerous area of the ground and this compounded with sides running past our slow midfielders and establishing field position similar to our 2015. This allowed the opposition to create deep entries and lock the ball in against us.

BallMove2017.jpg

Basically our backs didn't participate in transitioning the ball which put more running load onto our mids and talls to work up and back down the ground. I think this bore up pretty well in the way games played out where we were still defending well at the end of games but really looked cooked when we had possession and struggled to look like scoring in many games. Our i50 numbers also dropped like a stone which shows we took a massive beating in field position.

The coaching staff obviously took us down this line to try and keep the back 6 as organised as possible in case we turned the ball over but I think it really hurt our ability to score as heavily as we had been able to in our grand final year. Given our limitations in the middle with ruck stocks and leg speed we elected to play a defensive gambit which worked well for large portions of most games - borne out in our time in front stat.

Would we have done better playing more attacking football? I'm not sure. I think we would have put more games away comfortably but our losses would likely have been significantly worse - only Hawthorn and Essendon really got a hold of us and mauled us during the H&A - and most of that is down to a very organised defensive unit repelling a huge volume of forward thrusts.

Interestingly I think with our personnel changes we will play a much more aggressive brand of footy in 2018. More foot speed in the middle will mean better defensive pressure up the ground and our back 6 will be able to be more attacking when opportunity knocks. Masten, Priddis, Mitchell and Hutching out of the midfield and replaced by players much better overhead will improve our link up kicking through the middle of the ground.

I continue to remain bullish about 2018. We will definitely run and carry the ball more and will have the option to run from the backline or through the middle of the ground with the faster midfield.

He has bulked up a considerable amount.
Liked him in his draft year...Perhaps HBF won't be his mainstay this year?

Hopefully yes.

He seemed to be taking on players more often this season but not quite strong enough yet to pull it off.

He will be next season
