The Book of Woosha. Chapter 2, Round 11

And so it came to pass that the followers of Woosha (and yea, the ruckmen, utilities and defenders also) fell into their sinful ways. They chased not when they should have chased, tackled not when they should have tackled, and their disposal was like unto McManus having a bad hair day. And those who wore Red, Blue and White saw this, and were heartened and they kicked truly. Then, when all hope seemed lost, the disciples saidd 'surely we cannot lose this.' And disciple #9, he who is 9th in number, but first among his peers said, 'surely we can. For we have turned from the way of Woosha, and fallen. Yet all is not lost. Is there not time? Do we not have fresh legs? Let us go forth, and salvage this in the name of Woosha.' And the disciples heard this and went forth and were able to take some consolation from their toil. Yet as they left the Cauldron, disciple #27 said unto disciple #9 'Woosha will be ****ed.'
Disciple #9 heard this, and said. 'Yea. We must pray to him for forgiveness.' And the other disciples asked, 'how then should we pray to Woosha?' Disciple #9 thought for some time and said...
Our Woosha, who art at subi, hallowed be thy name.
Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, now, as it was in the 90s
Give us this round our weekly 4 points.
And forgive thine disciples for games like this.
Forgive thy midfielders for not manning up
Forgive thy defence for being leaky
Forgive thy veterans who art past it.
and forgive the maggot for existing.
Even as we forgive you for dodgy selection decisions
For yea, though we walked through the valley of the shadow of poor form.
We shalt fear not Brisbane. For we fear Woosha more
For you and thy staff shall kick our asses at training
Even as they deserve to be kicked.
Now lead us to the Gabba
And deliver us to victory
For then ours is the 4 points
And the top spot
for ever and ever
until the next round
Amen

The Good
Lets be honest, there's not many who can walk away from that fiasco without at least a little bit of soul searching. We got a draw because like many times this year we simply refused to accept an adverse result, dug deep, and somehow found what was needed. Self belief certainly isn't a problem with this group. Overconfidence might be.

Cousins continued his recent excellent form, but was one of many infected with the poor disposal bug. Early on, Judd was good. Chick played with grit, and Fletcher shrugged off injury concerns to play the sort of free running, attacking footy he's been playing all year. Gardie toiled hard, and was good without dominating. Embley was fantastic, providing a marking option all day, chasing (one of the few), and seems to now be a classic 'crunch time' player. He did some great things in the final quarter, and if he hadn't been smart enough to play on to Sampi, we might have been beaten by the clock.

Our forward line actually functioned pretty well. Given that we were soundly beaten out of the middle and our defence was thrashed, the fact that we stayed in the game means Phil'n'co deserve a pat on the back. Fido played a very very good game. His 5 goals included a couple of gems- as well as the one which was disallowed. Not only is he leading and marking well, he showed a certain amount of creative flair which was great to watch- he also definitely showed up to play in the final quarter, and was instrumental in the fightback. Matera's back on top of the goal kicking ladder, and bar a decent performance from Neitz tm, he could stay there for a while. Jako was solid all day and Haynes led well, whilst Sampi enjoyed Matera handling the best of the small defenders. Oddly enough, I said to the bloke next to me, midway through the 3rd that if I could have any player kicking for a goal after the siren, it would be Samps. Not only are his general skills uncanny, he is an absolutely ice cool, deadeye set shot on goal.

In defence, Wirrpunda provided run, flair, and some staggering kick ins. Perhaps he should just practice torps around the clock at training- if he can find another 30m, our new kickin strategy will be 'clear the HF line, kick to leading forward,' which I feel cuts out a lot of the unnecessary messing about. Glass had another serviceable game.

The Bad
Can you say Passenger? because we had about 9 out on the field at every instance. We were beaten, no, raped out of the middle. Gardiner is not at fault here, unless you expect him to dish out a perfect tap down onto a waiting midfielders chest at every single bounce. Frankly, it looks like the onballers have been a bit spoilt by the great service they've been getting. They didn't man up, and basically let the dogs midfield do whatever they like. There was by and large no defensive pressure, and the fact that our disposal was abysmal didn't help either. We need a pacey, hard tackling tagger type back here- Wooden ring a bell? Read?

Judd faded after his good first half- probably needs to do some fitness work. Munro sucked copious quantities of ass, and Rowan Jones had an absolute dog of a game- couldn't do a thing right. Also, I'm not sure everyone will agree with this, but this was not one of Braun's better outings this year, not by a long stretch. Yes he picked up 20 touches, but there were some things which stood out on the replay. His disposal was bad, but so was everyone elses. What really upset me, was the complete lack of any of the one percenters. (amazing, considering this has always been one of his biggest assets) He didn't tackle well or even chase, and I noted two occasions where him leaving his man open resulted in Bulldogs goals. He wasn't even shepherding- there was one instance which happened directly in front of me where Haynes gathered the ball from a pack, and had two bulldogs bearing down on him. Braun was about a metre away, and just stood there and watched. Didn't try and shepherd, didn't run and make space to present an option, didn't even say anything. Just stood there and watched the Bulldogs run by him. I'll be charitable and wonder if he is carrying an injury.

Our defense was humiliated. McIntosh was led to the ball, and looked out of sorts and disinterested. If he's not 100%, he shouldn't be played, simple as that. I'd prefer a 100% Carroll to a 50% Milli, crazy as that sounds. Banfield was killed by the game breaker in Brown. Hunter was simply non existent, and Gaspar looked a little lost in his first game back- which, if I were to say I told you so, shows why we should have instead brought back someone with some good WAFL form under their belt. Kasey Green also had a shocker.

The axe wasn't wielded last week, but it bloody well should be wielded now. The fact that we found some bollocks and stole 2 points shouldn't disguise that fact. Today we were comprehensively outplayed by a desperately undermanned side on the bottom of the ladder, at a ground where we're supposed to be invincible. If that isn't cause for concern, then I don't know what is. Put simply, our list needs a shake up to keep the guys hungry, because we're in danger of getting stale atm. The good news is that we're still a chance to snag the top spot if we could beat Brisbane next week, but Voss or no Voss, that idea is laughable at the moment. People like Hunter, Munro, Braun, Banfield and a few others need to realise that they're currently on ice which is thinning at about the same rate as Fido's hair.

The Ugly
Our disposal strayed from bad to ugly. Seriously, I think this was our worst game this year, which makes it pretty bizarre that we got some points out of it.

One of the most entertaining moments I had today was watching the Bulldogs supporters file out. They really are a dying breed- there were people wearing uggboots to the game, woosha preserve us!

Just to keep the bile flowing, can I note that 4 free kicks is the least any team has got since '94, and possibly longer. There were some holding the ball non-decisions that were truly mind boggling, and given the final score, its hard not be a little bitter. Having said that, I don't think we would have deserved it, so good on the maggots for screwing us. (wtf?) Incidentally, Shane McIrney should be highlighted for STILL not being able to bounce the ball properly. Is there some sort of umpiring training? Or do they just pocket their 80 grand and head off somewhere to screw each other up the arse?

There is one other thing which has been hacking me off for a while. There seems to be an incredible number of people at Subi who liked to get up and wander around in the middle of the game, and spookily, they all want to stand directly in front of where i sit, just when something important is happening. One ****wit couple walked halfway out of the stairs in the middle of the third and just stood there, blocking the entire sections view of an Eagles goal. Then the pricks just ignored an entire block of people yelling at them. If a security guard hadn't asked them to sit down or leave, I think there could have been a lynch at Subiaco, and I'm not talking about Quinten. The same thing happened in the final quarter, when those weak sorts did the math, decided we were screwed, and got up to leave. As some filed out in front of me, they stopped half way, because Fletch had just got a goal. So they stayed there, blocking our section's view waiting to see whether West Coast were a chance before deciding whether to stay or go. If you must be a loathsome, non-fan who doesn't have the balls to be a real supporter for the whole game, then please don't spoil it for those who stay to the bitter end no matter what. And incidentally, a big sucked in to those who did leave early and missed our most exciting passages of play for the day. Serves you right, you gutless freaks. And the next one of you who blocks my view will get a bottle in the back of your head.

Well, thats it, and i feel a lot better for having vented. Next week we have an enormous challenge, and we're going to have to find something more to be a chance. Time to find out how much guts we really have

I'll disagree with you on Braun, I thought he was pretty reasonable today compared to many others. However I'm certainly in agreeance that at the moment McIntosh does not appear to warrant a spot in the side. I'll even go so far as to say that as weird as it sounds, on today's performance the backline looks better with Carroll in there.

In the good category I'd have to add the way the crowd responded to the last quarter. That's as lively as I've heard the crowd for a long, long time.

Those people who call themselves "supporters" who left early should be VERY ashamed. i was FUMING when i saw hoards head off and had a go at one of them when they said something like what a weak effort", turned to them explaining my thoughts on their effort of supporting(and lets just say it wasnt complimentary:))

The umpiring sunk to new depths, seriously theres been bad umpiring since umpiring was invented but today was comical in its badness. This however is NOT the reason for the loss, just a point of observation. The reason for our loss is
a) Bulldogs played outstandingly well for a majorly undermanned side.
b)Our own ****yness. We seem to be cultivating a group of ****y players, Woosha its time to stamp the foot down in the form of an axe, see how ****y they are playing in the WAFL:)
c) No Back Up plan - highlighted in a few games this year if we arent flogging them in the guts, if they just Break even in the guts then we struggle, and have no other plan to revert to. Our forward line while working ok was very conjested. We have been winning by running hard scoring goals with few people in the forward line. If its conjested players cant lead. But yes, we NEED 2 ruckmen for our style of game and we NEED a back up plan.

The way I see it, Carroll is a sort of clanger magnet- by having him in the team, all of the mistakes and **** ups gravitate to him, leaving the rest of our team to play good footy. By not including him, we open the clanger box and distribute them freely through our side. We need to get him back quick!

You're probably not the only one who would sharply differ on what i said on Braun- he's actually polling a few votes this week by the look of things. I guess from where i was sitting it looked like he wasn't doing any of the little things u'd expect from him. I was prepared to swear blind this was his worst game of the year. Wierdly enough, got into an argument with some fans about it on the train home, with 3 saying he was ****ing dreadful, and 2 saying he was about best on ground..Meh, maybe some sort of space time continuum thingy means i saw a different game to you lot?

Very good assessment of what was very frustrating day at the footy! I too have to disagree on Brauny, who I thought played a pretty good game.

My turn to vent some frustration........
I was disappointed in the tackling of the team today. I have a vivid recollection of Chick chasing 3-4 Bulldogs one after the other and had to scream out "Help him!!!". There were countless times when Cousins and Judd ( to name just 2) simply refused to lay a tackle and just watched the opposition run by. There were too many others who didnt tackle also but from memory (havent watched the replay yet) only Chick, Fletcher, Embley and Fido were half decent in this area.

I thought the coaching team was poor at times today. Early in the first qtr I was worried about Banners on Brown. He didnt get near him all day and was absolutely flogged. There should have been a change at qtr time and definitely at half time. Woosh could have tried Chick or Humm, or Jones or SOMEONE else but he didnt. Josh Wooden would have been an ideal option today, Read and Collica need to come back in when fit..

I cant believe we went in with one ruckman today. Gaspar is not a ruckman and if we keeping pushing Gardy like this he will burn out before the end of the year. Seaby and McDougall have been in form in the WAFL.

In the last term we had just drawn even and Sampi went off, then Chick and the Fletcher!!!!! In that period the Bullies got 2 quick goals and blew the lead back out to 13pts. Fine to rest your players but not at critical times.

Unfortunately today we blew a chance to beat an undermanned team. Full credit to the Bulldogs who were gutsy all day and did not deserve to lose. We were very lucky to get 2 pts and as someone else wrote in another post - we did we wait till the last 2 mins to get really desperate!

This is the wake up call we should have heeded last week. With games against Brisbane, Kangas and Sydney coming it is gonna be a tough month.....

Phew.. take a breath, count to ten;) Go Eagles - lets flog the Lions!!!

I'd have to agree with that. I thought your lack of midfield accountability in the final three quarters was one of the main reasons you didn't win the game.

You were well beaten in the stoppages throughout most of the game and it did seem as though the players didn't man up and simply expected Gardiner to tap the ball down their throats, as you initally posted.

I didn't think the umpiring was as bad as many have made it out to be. After all, (as was posted on the main board) when you're second to the ball you can't expect to be getting many free kicks.

I agree with this. Nathan Brown was definately a player we should have developed a plan B for before the game. Maybe the coaching staff didn't think he would play or that banners would bounce back, who knows. Anyone know who our defensive coach is? It is either Micale or Wiley.

i agree that our midfield isn't accountable but that is what happens when you are playing a free running high scoring game.

i also agree that the coaching staff din't do enough on the day. banners never looked like beating brown.

If I ever ever ever see another performance like that again I am seriously going to consider doing bad things to my membership card! We should have won by 10 goals yesterday!!!

i'll preface this with the fact I have not seen the game....

I HATE TO SAY I TOLD YOU SO ....

i was fuming about the tackling last week.... the count from yesterday's game, we had about 38. Of which 13 came from Chick and Kerr. That's a 1/3 from 2 players. The others (midefielders that is), just don't seem to be as capable of applying pressure.

Banfield. I said last week, he looks $1 000 000+ playing on rookies, but put him on a player with class, and he looks ordinary. So what a suprise he gets toweled by Brown.

Please bring back Collica, please.

And don't get me started on wher to play Wirra. I'll admit, at the start of the season, I didn't think he should be played in defense. Iw as wrong, he makes an excellent defender.

But not as a player who should be standing shoulder to shoulder with his opponent. Nathan Brown is quality, and needs to be treated with respect for the danger he is. Leon Davis, and players of his ilk, can be exposed for the lack of consistent skill, and how to play when your opponent runs off you.

rant over

That's not even funny. Ignoring the 'we should have won by ten goals' bit, the membership card is a sacred thing, the sanctity of which is never to be jeopardized. Personally I still have every single one of mine, over a decades worth in my Eagles box. They're a very special thing.

I was sitting their in disbelief reading your summary on Braun. You honestly must have been in some weird other dimension because I thought Braun was almost BOG. Clearly his best game of the season. How we could see it so differently and I mean the end of the spectrum here....is beyond me.

On the midfielders and not manning up or chasing. Same can be said for the Dogs. That's what happens in a free wheeling, running, high scoring type game. Cousins, Fletch, Kerr, Judd, Embley, Braun all had over 20 disposals...something I dont think Doggies fan would be happy about. I think the chasing, tackling goes both ways. Plus it is always the midfielders that get roasted for not tackling. The backmen have to, the forwards sometimes do (Phil all the time) but when the midfielders dont tackle, everybody notices.

If everyone started to play ultra defensive, tackle, chase type game...we would end up like Malthouse's Eagles and be lucky to score 10 goals a game. IMO....Ill back my midfield. Were good enough to win enough of the ball to win the game, sure it doesnt always pan out that way like against the Bombers, Hawks and Bulldogs but most of the time we do win the midfield battle and that turns into victories. Also, none of our midfielders are even in their prime yet. Once they all get another couple of years on them I think our midfield will be better than Brisbane's was last season. Then days like yesterday will be few and far between.

Anyways....rant over.

Out of Cousins, Judd, Fletcher, Kerr, Read, Braun, Embley...only Embley can kick it 50 meters consistantly.
Braun's disposal is generally the worst.
Fletcher has the best disposal but a 40 metre kick.
40 for Kerr
45 for Read.

It's easily the best ball winning midfield group but lacks penetration of most teams.
We should run Wirrapunda, Chick, and even Wooden throiugh there more often.

As for Cuz...if he had a longer kick... he would be Voss. Remember Voss' kicking used to be poor aswell. But he worked his **** off. Cousins needs to do the same to be as good.

Nice work Mead, although i also disagree with you about Braun

I remember seeing him tackling 2 and 3 players with the ball and never getting any support from teammates. He was constantly doing the small things that no one notices

In hindsite, we stole a draw from the bulldogs as they deserved to win it more than we did

Re Braun, I went back and watched the tape again yesterday (Exams, what exams?!? :D) and I'm still not seeing it I'm afraid. He did do some good things, but there were so many piddling little things, and some times when he looked extremely lost. It
did seem as though he got far more time than he usually does, (probably because Fletch was walking wounded) but it didn't strike me as one of his better games, far from it. I suppose I'll just have to resign myself to being nuts. In any event, I'm certainly looking forward to the tongue lashing I'll get from MDB if he reads this.

On the game, we were caned out of the centre. (from memory anyway.. anyone have centre clearance stats) I'm not sure whether its down to the coaches or the players themselves, but in a situation where that is happening, you *must* man up and play defensive footy until the trend is reversed, otherwise the opposition will kick a lot of goals in a short amount of time. When we're at our running and gunning best we're invincible- if you look at some of the best quarters we've had- 3rd quarter v Port Adelaide, 1st quarter v Fremantle, 1st Quarter v Collingwood, 3rd quarter v Melbourne.... they've all been situations where Gardiner got thoroughly on top and our midfield made the opposition pay- a team which is getting clean clearances time after time can ice a game in a very short period. But its unrealistic to expect Gardiner to give that sort of use for the whole games. Because our midfield doesn't man up when the tide swings against them, we've become a burst team, which basically tries to limit the damage the opposition does for a couple of quarters before blowing them away with 10-15 minutes of scarily good footy.

Against the Dogs, our midfield got beaten, and our defence was thumped. If it hadn't been for the extremely efficient forward line, (and Phil Matera in specific, who won't be there for the next two weeks) we would have got beaten and by a fair margin at that.

Mead, I agree with everyone else, and think you must have been at another game.

I would put Braun as BOG, if not him, Cuz.

You raved about Embley - just go and have a look at who his direct opponent was, and then see who got best for the Bulldogs. You might be amazed, but I think it may have been his player. For two weeks in a row - Embleys man has got BOG. Last week McPhee kicked 4 and set up two. This week his man kicked a bag also.

For some reason you have taken a disliking to Braun and bag him all the time. I would say that since coming back from the WAFL he has been in the top half of our better players.

Yesterday was his best game of the season.....we can't have a full team of attacking players...some need to be defensive and do the things that receivers don't do. Braun is that. He will be getting 5 votes from me this week.

Brauny

Thanks again Mead for a great read. However, like most of the other learned members of this forum :) I must disagree with your view on Brauny's game. I too felt that he was BOG or close to it.

We all see games differently - e.g. I cannot see how the orange umpires could only see four infringements by Bulldogs for the entire game!

We all have blinkered views on certain players - I think Lynch is a hack and will never make an AFL footballer but others may disagree. I also don't rate Duncan as highly as most others - but that is the beauty of following football - we are all experts (in our own minds:) ).
