A very enjoyable game with two well matched sides. My criticism of the umpires will undoubtably be a weekly event as once again the Eagles needed to be 30% better than the opposition to get a win. Unfortunately for us they were only 25% better and lost.
For the pies Buckley showed his class with youngster Jones on him for most of the natch and they scored some excellent snaps and long range efforts.
For the Eagles one must remember that they were without eight of their top players and gave rookies a lot of ground time. In the two games played in the Mickey Mouse cup so far Darren Glass and Chad Fletcher have shown that they are going to be emerging top players this season. I was very impressed with Prior and Harding is looking a real steal from Freo. Sierakowski didn't really get into the game a lot but showed promise.
I thought Collica was disappointing but it maybe was first match nerves.
By round 1 we should have these guys back :-

Cousins
Jakovitch
Braun
Cummings
Kemp
Phil Matera
Andrew Donnelly
Ryan Turnbull (no star but a good 2nd ruckman)

and we have yet to see
Richard Tarlor
Mark Merenda

So on balance I have to be very happy with the way things are going with the Eagles for the season ahead.

I can't say the same for the pies. The Kangaroos were a much better side than the pies and the Eagles should have been well beaten by any half decent side given their obvious use of the Ansett cup as a rookie try out and positional try out pre-season group of games. The game suggests that the pies will struggle this season.

I've still got absolutely no idea what the free kick was for (against Matera in the last minute), but Collingwood were the slightly better side on the night and I thought the result was quite fitting.

That's right, Frodo. Blame the umpires, you spineless piece of shit. You are totally devoid of any sense of sportsmanship or good grace. What an absolute failure you are as a human being.

I thought it was a great game to watch and I thought both sides showed a lot of character. From a Collingwood point of view, I liked the performances of Didak, Fraser, McKee, L.Davis, Holland, O'Bree, Scotland and Lonie. Wirrapunda was sensational for the Weagles and the old champ, Matera, was very dangerous.

Great game. Great result. And even if we don't win another game all year, we won this one ... AND IT FELT GREAT.

Seemed to be a lot of Collingwood fans in the crowd, and I couldn't recognise any of the faces, so I'd say they were mostly W.A. locals. Nice to know we've still got a good following over there.

Wasn't Wirra great? From an Eagles POV it is just so good to see him back and in form after so long. I'd even put a bit on him for the Brownlow if I had any.... sensational. Also thought Jonesy did a pretty good job on Buckley. He wasn't ever going to shut him down completely, but I think he did reduce his effectiveness just a bit. Gardiner was pretty good, but still rusty, so hopefully his skills will improve. Meanwhile I'm really impressed with your young guy Didak. Hadn't heard much about him from over here, but looks a great talent.

A pretty good standard game given where the two combatants are expected to end up this season, and the margin was a pretty fair metre of the game IMHO. That goal umpire had a few problems though! Doubt we'll see him for a while...

Great to see MM get a good (friendly) reception, must admit I was a bit nervous about how some people might react, but he got the kind of treatment he deserved.

But I dont understand why beating us is such a big deal? "And even if we don't win another game all year, we won this one ... AND IT FELT GREAT" etc... Surely if you can fire up and beat the Roos next week it will mean more -won't it? And despite what some of you may believe, most of us know exactly where we're at this season, and honestly don't have delusions of grandure. You really don't need to point it out any more...
We're not that slow on the uptake....

Just how I saw it anyway....

btw/ the pies are really international now, what with Holland and Scotland playing for them....
Now you just need Britain as coach!

I think because beating West Coast at Subiaco has traditionally always been a daunting task.

lol! Yep we need a britain and were set!

I thought the game was very even and scrappy in times. Both teams were dropping marks which is a cardinal sin in footy. I thought a draw would be fitting result despite the fact they don't allow them in Ansett Cup.

When you barrack for Collingwood, beating ANYONE is a big deal. We don't win many, so we've just gotta get the most out of any wins we do get, even if it's against the Manangatang Thirds.

I'm starting to think that WC needs a specialist forward coach. If our bigguns are taking out we have no one left to kick the goals.

Is it the blind leading the blind?

Rookie umpire fox paid the kick for a 'trip' by Matera although he said that Matera was being held.

Obvious eh!

If Fox paid the free kick against Matera for a trip, shouldn't he have also reported him automatically? Either way Fox was in the wrong (either wrong decision or not reporting Matera)

I enjoyed the game thoroughly, great to see the future of our club getting out there and playing well. Doesnt look good for Collingwood though, Braun Cousins and Kemp our three most prolific ball winners werent playing neither were our two top goal scorers and yet only a two point win. Im not saying Eagles are gonna be great this year but Collingwood dont look like there going to be any better.

I am a cowardly dickhead and my worthless words are as follows:

Anyone who blames the umpires for defeat which Frodo seems like he is going to do every time the Eagles lose (plenty of times) is a cowardly dickhead whose words are worthless.

Think about this for a moment. If the ball was touched by Wirra (I think it was) before the line then it is play on isn't it? if it is over the line then it is a goal, so then you would agree with me that that should have been either a goal or play on and NOT a behind. So stop your sooking about a free kick when obvioulsy by your own admission the goal umpire got it wrong.

Look bach Seth and you will see I was answering Nick the pieman not sooking.

From my viewpoint it did not cross the line and should not have been a behind. From Nick's viewpoint it was on the line and did not cross so we agree. The umpire was wrong.

However, it is not a black and white case.
If a player kicks at goal the ball may hit a defenders hand on the line and be carried behind the line by the force of the ball or the defenders inertia whilst still in the control of the defender. It is a rare scenario but the result is a behind.

If I may, I just saw that incident on Optus. The ball clearly did not cross the line, so it doesn't matter whether it was touched or not. It was play on. It certainly was not a goal or a behind.

You are right, it was either a goal or play on. No behind & no free kick.
