Another Subiaco victory for the Eagles, however this one was something slightly more special, as a win over the arch rivals Fremantle always is. The Eagles were always in control of this match, and a very strong team performance reflected the 38 point victory.
There were very few men that didn't win their respective one-on-one battles for West Coast, whilst even less were actually beaten one-on-one by their Docker counterparts.
My man of the match went to Daniel Chick for his top display of tagging on Matthew Pavlich. Not only did he completely take Fremantle's best player out of the match, he caused major headaches himself, and had a hand in a number of goals.
Quick guide to the ratings: out of 10, 10 being the best, 0 being the worst, while 6 reflects an average performance.
# 17 Daniel Chick - Rating: 9
Quarter-by-Quarter: 7 - 9 - 8 - 9
Remarks: Chick played his best game for his new club, playing a key role in the Eagles win over Fremantle. Chick played on gun Docker Matthew Pavlich for most of the match, whom he kept to just 18 disposals, of which 5 were counted as clangers. Chick also picked up 16 touches himself, whilst laying an amazing 8 tackles. Chick was particularly dangerous around goals, having a hand in four of the West Coast goals, either through passing by foot, or by tackling to force a turnover.
# 1 Michael Gardiner - Rating: 8.5
Quarter-by-Quarter: 8 - 8 - 8 - 7
Remarks: Yet again another dominating ruck display from Michael Gardiner, racking up another 24 hit outs to his name. The contest between he and Simmonds was billed up as very evenly matched, but Gardiner once again showed that he is the form ruckman in the competition. Not only was he a clear-cut winner in the ruck he did damage around the ground, picking up 15 touches and 4 marks.
# 7 Chad Fletcher - Rating: 8.5
Quarter-by-Quarter: 8 - 8 - 6 - 8
Remarks: Fletcher has given Fremantle nightmares yet again. He always seems to save his best for the Dockers and today was no different. He ended up with 27 touches, including 18 in a dominating first half display. His opposite man Peter Bell, also had 28 touches, but Fletcher was awarded this battle because he also managed to kick 2 goals and did more damage with the pill than Bell did.
# 3 Chris Judd - Rating: 8
Quarter-by-Quarter: 10 - 7 - 7 - 6
Remarks: Started off like a house on fire with 10 first quarter touches, however he pulled up sore midway through the second quarter and had minimal impact for the rest of the game. Still received a very rating because the match was won by the Eagles in the first term, where he was one of the main protagonists of the game. As usual his skills were silky, whilst his willingness to get the hard ball was shown in his 8 clearances for the match.
# 9 Ben Cousins - Rating: 8
Quarter-by-Quarter: 8 - 8 - 7 - 7
Remarks: An unusual game for Cousins today. He never seemed to get into the game to a big extent, but finished the match with the most touches (equal with Fletcher) for the Eagles. Also unusual was Cousins best quarters where the two in which he touched the ball the least - he managed 10 touches in the third term, but didn't cause great damage with 7 of them being handballs. Cousins was very penetrative taking the ball inside 50 on 7 occasions, and once again racked up plenty of clearances.
# 28 Ashley Sampi - Rating: 8
Quarter-by-Quarter: 9 - 6 - 8 - 6
Remarks: Exciting game by the young Ashley Sampi, in which he played far and away his best game of the season, which should result in a Rising Star nomination. He caused immeasurable troubles for the Dockers defence whenever the ball hit the deck inside West Coast's attacking 50. Has great poise, balance and ability to kick goals on the run, and is looking more and more like Chris Lewis each week.
# 11 Ashley McIntosh - Rating: 7.5
Quarter-by-Quarter: 7 - 7 - 6 - 8
Remarks: McIntosh completely took Justin Longmuir out of the match, giving him just 5 touches and 0 marks in the first three quarters, before Jlo broke in the final term to rack up 7 touches and 3 marks making his match look much better than it really was. McIntosh didn't inflict too much harm himself on the Dockers, but his role in nullifying Freo's top marking forward was more than acceptable for the old champ.
# 24 Phil Read - Rating: 7.5
Quarter-by-Quarter: 8 - 6 - 8 - 7
Remarks: Wearing 24 in his first game in 2 seasons, Read started on the bench before coming onto the field and making an immediate impact. Racked up 17 disposals, and it was as if he had been playing week-in week-out all the time. His roving of the packs with exceptional, and often resulted in Eagles winning 50-50 ball from marking contests. Will only improve, and is going to be a key player in the Eagles revival.
# 32 Andrew Embley - Rating: 7.5
Quarter-by-Quarter: 7 - 7 - 8 - 6
Remarks: Another top performance from Embley, in what has so far proving to be a career-turning season. Embley made 4 rebounds, while 4 inside 50's proved what a top all around the ground running game that Embley put in against Freo's mob. He had 24 touches, while his disposal was of a much higher standard than we have become accustomed to from him. Big strides have been taken by Embley this year and aren't getting any smaller.
# 6 Drew Banfield - Rating: 7
Quarter-by-Quarter: 7 - 7 - 6 - 7
Remarks: Had the big job on one of the Dockers big funs Jeff Farmer, and gave him an absolute footballing lesson. Farmer was kept to a mere 6 touches and no shots on goal at all. Banfield himself was also quite damaging out of defence making 4 rebounds and taking 7 marks, of which most were in the back 50. Had an injury scare and bounced back well, and ended up beaten Farmer on the scoreboard 1 behind to nothing.
# 18 Rowan Jones - Rating: 7
Quarter-by-Quarter: 7 - 8 - 6 - 6
Remarks: A great first half from Jones, however wasn't able to back it up in the second, and spent a fair bit of it on bench. Was also a good target around the ground with 6 marks, and did some good one percenters - smothers, tackles, sheppards at crucial times. One blunder however, when he kicked aimlessly from defence which led to a Freo goal.
# 20 Dean Cox - Rating: 7
Quarter-by-Quarter: 7 - 7 - 7 - 6
Remarks: Once again proved his worth as a top subsitute in the ruck for Gardiner, and very dangerous up front. Started off very well with 6 touches in the first term. Didn't have as much impact around the ground for the rest of the match, although his rucking was very solid, and he did kick a very crucial goal to get the Eagles a four goal break in the second term.
# 27 Glen Jakovich - Rating: 7
Quarter-by-Quarter: 7 - 7 - 6 - 7
Remarks: Started off pretty well, leading well and delivering well into the forward line, but fell away abit after the first term. Still provided a neat target, and ended up taking 4 marks for the match, while he kicked a goal from outside 50 which stopped the Freo run in the fourth term.
# 38 David Haynes - Rating: 7
Quarter-by-Quarter: 7 - 7 - 7 - 7
Remarks: His best performance of the season to date, and his most all round display, in which he showed his good hands, and his ability to get the ball at ground level. Once again took plenty of grabs, pulling down 7 of them, while 2 goals is a good return. Kicking from a set shot is still something that Haynes must work on if he is to become a good forward for the Eagles.
# 4 Daniel Kerr - Rating: 6.5
Quarter-by-Quarter: 6 - 7 - 7 - 6
Remarks: Kerr struggled to make an impact in this match, and then injured his leg in the third term to further add a bitter pill for his Western Derby. The result of this injury could be season making for West Coast, and will hopefully not be more than a week or two. While on the ground, he only picked up the 11 touches, and didn't give the Dockers the heartaches they were expecting.
# 5 Chad Morrison - Rating: 6.5
Quarter-by-Quarter: 6 - 7 - 6 - 7
Remarks: Prepared to sit back today and watch the game unfold without making to much of an impact, and he really wasn't required too. Still seems to be getting back into the swing of things, but would most likely be disapointed after putting in his best display of the season the week before. However, he did hold up the defensive end reasonably well and kept his opposition honest.
# 10 Michael Braun - Rating: 6.5
Quarter-by-Quarter: 6 - 6 - 7 - 6
Remarks: Still struggling to get much game time, and is struggling to make much of an impact while he's out there. His third term was very good, picking up 5 disposals and bobbing up around the ground, showing that he can still produce the goods when on the field, but isn't getting enough game time. He is good enough to play 3 quarters of the footy in this team, but Woosha can't seem to find enough time for him. He needs to either get more game time or have a week or two in the WAFL so that his match fitness doesn't fall below acceptable levels.
# 33 Phil Matera - Rating: 6.5
Quarter-by-Quarter: 7 - 6 - 5 - 8
Remarks: One of the few Eagles to get genuinely beaten by his man, Roger Hayden, and he still managed to kick 2 goals - a very good return for a forward pocket player. Should've probably kicked another couple as well, however the ball just beat him over the goal line one time and he missed a shot from 40 he normally would've nailed. Still up the top of the goalkicking ladder, and is capable of playing much better footy - watch out small defenders in the AFL.
# 39 Adam Hunter - Rating: 6.5
Quarter-by-Quarter: 7 - 6 - 6 - 6
Remarks: Struggled to get into the game although he did lay some good one percenters early on. Finished with only four touches, while a rare venture into the forward line saw him miss a set shot for a behind. Another player who is still getting into the season after missing for a while with injuries.
# 46 Trent Carroll - Rating: 6.5
Quarter-by-Quarter: 5 - 6 - 7 - 7
Remarks: Started off poorly, with Trent Croad getting the early jump on him, however only got stronger as the game progressed and ended up a gaining a slight victory of Croad. Once again his kicking was very good, but as usual he made some very poor decisions putting teammates under the pump. Took a total of 5 marks, which shows that he could be worth a punt in the forward line. He is still giving away silly frees (stupid high tackle on Croad in the first term).
# 35 Kasey Green - Rating: 6
Quarter-by-Quarter: 5 - 7 - 6 - 6
Remarks: Did a reasonable job on Medhurst, although Medhurst was one of the most dangerous Dockers whenever the ball went forward into attack. Green's marking up was up and down, at times he was right on Medhurst's tail, but then at others he found himself wanting 15 metres away from him. Picked up 12 disposals himself and rebounded the ball from defence well at times.
# 42 Paul Johnson - Rating: 5.5
Quarter-by-Quarter: 6 - 6 - 5 - 6
Remarks: First gamer didn't get too much time on the field, and only picked up the one disposal. Very hard to judge anything about him from the performance, although he does appear to have good hands at ground level for a big man. Perhaps needs to work on his vision when he went at the man leaving the ball alone, which was picked up by a Docker and rebounded for a goal. Big young guy though, who looks like he can break a pack open well.
