Question thegur (& others) - If we have either Jakovich or Gaspar at CHF, do we still need a big marking forward at FF like Wilson, Lynch or (maybe even, though I don't think so) McDougall?

Or do we lose the flexibility of a small mobile forward line by having two big hulks instead of none?

PS I'm not trying to dictate an answer - and I don't know the answer, I'm just wondering. And I've always really liked Wilson and wish he was still in the team.

(Reading from the Book of Woosha, chapter 2, Round 8.)
..And so it came to pass that the 22 disciples of Woosha found themselves facing the black and white abyss of defeat. And as the three quarter siren sounded, Woosha went down unto the disciples, and ministered unto them, and said: Be not dismayed, lads, for I have not brought thee to this poorly surfaced wilderness to suffer defeat. Believe in thyselves, as surely as thou'st believeth in me. Run hard, good long kicks out of the centre, and tackle the bastards if they even have a sniff of the pill. Do these things in my name, and ye shall triumph. Do them not, and Jako shalt kick thou asses when thou returnest.
Disciple #32 heard Woosha sayest these things, and he wept, saying- 'Master, we are tired. Our feet art swollen, and our run hath dried up. Also, the umpires hath sodomized us all day. How can we do these things that you ask?'
At this, Woosha was consumed with great wrath, and said: Embers, quit being such a pussy. Ye shall find the will to do these things, and in doing so, ye shall be a beacon unto others. Yea, I shall make thee the instrument of my will. Now get out there and vanquish them, or I shalt bitch slap ye so hard that I shalt smite thou halfway to Perth!
And Disciple #32 heard these words, and was filled with great fear and new energy, and he went out onto the field and moved amongst the followers of the Dark Lord Mick, and smote many of them, and gathered many possessions and kicked several goals. And even as Woosha had said, the disciples triumphed, and returned to Perth. And Disciple #32 even managed to get the number of the daughter of Dark Lord Mick when she spake unto him after the game, and he resolved to return soon and convert her to the bright way of blue and gold.
GOLD! In fact....PLATINUM! :D

I think that we do need the extra big down forward, still, even with Jako or Gaspar.

Travis still pushes a long way up the ground, and Jako never seems to enter the F50. Basically, they both play all their football a kick away from that goal-kick distance range.

Especially with Jako though, little stab passes to the lead are not his forte. IMO, as I said before, if we are going to kick longer into the F50, we need the ability to take the pack mark, not just the leading mark.

Who can take this pack mark .... ?

as for this inflexibility, well Haynes maybe flexibile, but he ain't touchin' the ball. So, I'd still be leaning towards Lynch or McDougall who could possible play other posiitons around the ground. but my vote is for the one-dimensional Willow, for one more go, so he can do what he does best. Goals and Marks, and hits.

With our midfield being dominant recently, we're dictating how we send the ball into our forward line, ie: straight passes to small forwards.

When we come up against better teams (perfect example Adelaide) when our midfields break even, we dont have the luxury of pinpointing passes and bombing it in long is useless to Fido and Sampi. Thats where someone like Wilson can create a contest and bring the ball to ground for our smaller players, and thats something Haynes cant do

I've been thinking about this, and truth be known, we only need one big forward when it's going well, and it should be at FF, not CHF.....stay with me here for a minute ....

we are, IMO, the best team at "running through lines" ... that BS line which suggests that the players we have can carry the ball greater distances and then, in our case shoot on goal.

When we are doing this well, CHF becomes irrelevant. Witness the 1stQ last Saturday, we just ran through the HF line, and kicked towards the square/goals.

Seems to make more sense to have a big lad in the goal square.

Does this make sense? anyone have any thoughts or am I talking cr@p?

I was thinking about what we'd be like at the SCG given last week, we could of had 14 by 1/4 time.

then again, when we are not playing well, the CHF becomes more important when we can't just burst through, and we need a legitimate target on both lines.

This is very true when we are winning the ball straight out of the guts. The true CHF position becomes largely irrelevant.

But we still need that tall target around the HF line when we are rebounding out of defence. How many times have you seen Wirra rebound beautifully out of defence, and then we stop short at half forward because the ball turns into a 50-50, and we lose posession.

A tall CHF is still a necessity for coming out of defence, and providing a roaming target.
