Well, since we don't have much to offer in terms of draft picks. What players would we be looking to give up for him?

Are Grundy/Sumner/Mattner the only players from SA on our list? With Davis going to GWS they could be interested in Grundy + something for Walker. Johnston possibly.

Sumner could be a definate + 2nd round draft picks.

I'd hate to lose Lewis Johnston, but can see him going in a trade for Taylor Walker though, but that would suck losing Johnston. :(

Is there anything we're willing to give up that Adelaide would deem adequate compensation?

I don't know if there is.

As much as I rate Grundy, a straight swap for Tex would be pretty close to fair. Walker has more or less proven he'll at the very least be an adequate player, and has greater room for improvement than Grundy. Grundy is probably worth a bit more, but not a huge amount. We are overflowing with key defenders. Adelaide just lost Phil Davis. I'd be tempted to do Grundy and a second rounder for Walker and a first rounder.

That said, while I'm keen on Walker, he's probably not the exact style of FF we're after. In a crowded SCG forwardline, you probably want somebody who relies less on leading and more on strong contested marking than Walker does.

I'd swap Grundy for Walker if I thought we were going to win a premiership next year, since Richards and LRT could hold down the backline (provided they don't get injured).

Since I don't think we will, I don't think giving up Grundy is a good idea, considering we could find ourselves without a fullback in 2 or 3 years time.

Maybe we could just send Mattner back, and tell them it's Grundy.

I think if we were to legitimately offer something for Walker, Johnston would have to come into calculations to appease the Crows and for us to come up with a deal good enough.

I don't want to lose him, but I just think it'd be inevitable for us to have to use him as a bargaining chip given we have no 1st round pick to use (will be used on Mitchell) and not a lot of other pieces to move (that would interest the Crows or that we would be willing to give up).

I think Grundy + Johnston would be paying overs, just testing the waters to see what it would take and if we were willing to pay it.

What. I can't believe you people..trade Grundy?? The guys like 24 or something. He's good one on one, and he rebounds well too. He will be our FB for the next 5 years +
Untouchable. Key defenders don't just grow on trees. Players like Franklin would tear Richards in half.

I've asked this before, with no answer ... but isn't Walker out of contract? Does a trade still need to be agreed? Or can he just sign with whoever offers the best deal?

If he is uncontracted from what I believe, if a trade deal cannot be reached between the Swans and the Crows, then he can nominate for the National or Pre-Season Draft.

To be perfectly honest i would be okay with a Grundy/Johnston trade for Walker. Our defence is super strong and wouldn't be any weaker if we traded Grundy as we would simply move LRT back to the backline and put Walker in the forward line with Reid.

It would be a very good deal for us (considering our strength in defence and our weak forward line) and i suspect it would be a good deal for Adelaide as well (though we would have to ask a Crows supporter about that).

what about in 2-3 yrs time when both LRT and teddy retire, who would we have then, alex johnson and who, what if johnson stagnates in his development.

You cant just trade away 24 yr old CHB, we would have to give up something to get him though, johnston isn't getting his opportunites here so if we were interested i wouldn't be against using him to bring walker here

To get Walker we need to take risks. Yes trading Grundy is risky but i think it would be a smart move.

Grundy's still improving. I'd hate to trade him.

I know this is all hypothetical but in order to get someone like Walker we would have to give up something valuable. Grundy is a very good key defender but we have plenty of very good key defenders at the moment and we will have 2 to 3 years to find replacements for Richards and LRT (possibly longer). By trading away Grundy for Walker we do not make our defence weaker but we do make our forward line a hell of a lot stronger (and our forward line has been a huge problem for us for a few years now).

So let me get this right...

Taylor Walker IS off contract.

If we offer him a contract he deems good enough, he can nominate for the draft and we can get him there.

But Adelaide can attempt to get something for him before that happens by trading him (like the way the Saints tried to get something for Luke Ball, but they ended up letting him walk to the draft).

Is that all correct?

Yeah, but there's no guarantee that we would get him from the draft, and you wouldn't think he would leave the club like that. Not many do. Trade is the safer option.

So some people here are saying Grundy should be 'untouchable'? LOL. I guess we overrate our players just like all other supporters. Nothing about what Grundy does is indispensible. He is a good AFL defender, but that's it. I guarantee that Taylor Walker, for all his faults, has more value than Grundy in the open market and the Crows would not be willing to do that trade straight up (if it's even a possibility mind you). Part of trade value is potential and Walker still has a fair bit of that, no matter what you think of him. He might not be a better player than Grundy right now, but Grundy is what he is, and I'm pretty sure Adelaide could find a better offer somewhere. If they had to deal with us and wanted a defender, their starting point in any negotiations would be Johnson. You can bet on that.
