Ranges silence the Cannons

THE Eastern Ranges have got one back on bogey team Calder Cannons, finishing strongly to record a 20-point win in their TAC Cup clash at Carlton's Princes Park on Sunday afternoon.

The Ranges, who were blasted out of last year's TAC Cup finals series by a 101-point Calder thrashing, gained the early advantage on Sunday and held-off a late Cannons charge to take the points.

A slight lapse from Eastern in the third quarter saw its four-goal half-time lead whittled down to just five points at the final change.

Early in the final quarter, the Cannons got their noses in front with a couple of goals but the Ranges responded and kicked away with four goals of their own.

Eastern coach Darren Bewick said his team's effort was "super" all day.

"To get the win against quality opposition should give them confidence for the rest of the season," he said.

Big, fast and ready

FOOTBALL fans, meet Jonathon Patton.

He's tall, he's talented and he's coming to an elite national competition near you.

The Eastern Ranges captain has been touted as one of the best young talents in the country and looms as a top-three selection in this year's national draft.

And, with Greater Western Sydney holding the first three picks in the draft, the young Rowville resident might need to start shopping for a suitcase.

Patton has starred in the early rounds of the 2011 TAC Cup season, kicking bags of goals despite repeated double-team and, on occasion, triple-team tactics from the opposition.

Eastern Ranges star could be No. 1 draft pick

HIS team lost, but the 17-year-old being billed as this year's No. 1 draft pick justified the hype with the most exciting TAC Cup display this season.

Eastern Ranges tall forward Jonathon Patton had 13 contested marks in the 43-point loss to North Ballarat, continually climbing over packs to showcase his aerial brilliance.

One AFL recruiter said last week he would be shocked if the 197cm, 95kg player from Scoresby did not head to Greater Western Sydney, which holds the first three picks in this year's draft

THE Eastern Ranges received a reality check on Saturday, according to coach Darren Bewick, as their four-game TAC Cup winning streak came to a screeching halt in North Ballarat.

The Ranges, who were facing their first road test of the season, fell to the Rebels by 43 points at North Ballarat Oval.

After controlling the early exchanges, the Ranges seemed to go to sleep, allowing the Rebels to pile on nine first-quarter goals to their one, giving the home side an eight-goal advantage by the first change.

The Ranges fought back, closing the gap to 34 points at half-time, and got as close as 23 points early in the third, before switching off again to let the Rebels skip away

Three boys who i know, who will be in with a big shot at getting drafted this year. Ben Slattery, Max Warren and Nick Sargeant. The first two especially have featured in the best almost every game. Any opinions on these boys???

Teen is a giant among men

JONATHON Patton has grown up in Melbourne's eastern suburbs. He didn't make an agonised choice between football, cricket, basketball or any other exotic sport. He doesn't have a brother who plays in the AFL already. Here's the key thing about the teenager tipped to be picked at No. 1 in this year's national draft - he's just really, really good at footy

Warren maybe, not sure Slattery and Sargent bring enough to the table. Solid players who should take a shot at VFL footy but they lack any stand out in an area.
Interesting times over the next 6 weeks or so with 5 playing for Metro and a few injuries. Some new names drafted in this week after a few under 16 kids getting a shot last week as well.
