Misspellings of the Week

Spoilt for choice again this week, so will feature 3 common words that have been roundly abused on this board.

professionalism - something lacking recently in the AFL's handling of the interchange fiasco.

experience

frightening

And remember that old rule: i before e, except after c.

Of course there are exceptions to that rule, but we'll go with the general principle and leave those to another day.

I'm going to be bad and point out that firefox has a built in spell check... :p

True Pongo, but the spelling evidence on the boards indicates that spell checks are rarely consulted, and they're not much help at exam time. Ideally posters would be self-sufficient in basic spelling, so this thread concentrates on useful, common words - nothing obscure or recherche.

Oh dear...

Ok, so that may have been a bit recherche. Could be worse - I might have worked out how to insert the accent.:p Now DW, you know the procedure...where's your Oxford? I mean, why else would you come on BF?
Hey, that's just mean! Sometimes I like to feign footballing knowledge too you know! Besides, who would give you grief if I didn't? :D

Word Celebration

It behoves this thread to occasionally celebrate a word or phrase; ideally a not-so-common word or phrase, lest it be lost through disuse. This week Easy Grammar Fix chosen to celebrate;
put to rout which means to utterly defeat.
E.g. Collingwood put Geelong to rout.

Go Pies!:p:D:thumbsu:

A bit off topic, but did you see the picture of Shane Wakelin in the shower in the Herald Sun on Sunday, Snag? I know you're one of his biggest fans.

No topic too obtuse for EGF.

I did see it DW, and as Grace Darling might say, it was gay.

Is it just me or does Shane have too-ready a tendency to take off his shirt? Look, those of us who have hairy men in our lives don't need any more images like this. It just reminds me that I haven't cleaned the shower this weekend because I was too busy watching the footy at both AFL and VFL levels.

And there's been a bit of this posing about. Have you seen the Male Model thread here in the nest? It's probably the funniest thread ever. But it has to stop! The day Marty Clarke starts posing as the new Fabio is the day I turn my face to the wall and give up footy forever.

Although I know both are ok, I think you'll find "behooves" is a lot more fun to write. :)

Indeed, and I still fancy "rooves". I think EGF should strive to retain as many forms of as many words as possible for the sake of flexibility, richness and to maximis/ze our chances of getting the spelling correct.:p

Love your work Snag!

I'm something of a grammer Nazi myself and I loathe the current fashion of writing, where it seems as if the writers were teeny-boppers texting each other. Ergo, I enjoy reading your erudite posts.

Another pet hate: people who say "yor've", "wear've" and "there've" when they mean "you've", "we've" and "they've"

oops :p

And Snag, whilst I agree in theory that we should embrace various spellings, I generally won't stand for crass Americanisms such as "analog". I won't even sit for them.

Well spotted mdc. Salty, (thinking quickly) ponders replying with: " I deliberately miss-spelled "grammar" to see who was paying attention.....

but, sadly, that would be stretching the truth. Hoist by my own pettard!

Just to make you cringe Snag...

My third year uni tutor handed back our final assignments and very politely provided about 40% of the class some criticism.

That is...

'There' is the place I'll meet you... not their
And 'their' is the thing they own... not the place I'm meeting you
And 'they're' going to the place I'm meeting you... not any of the above

All of a sudden struck with fear I thought 'I know that... but dear God I was tired writing that essay... and eep! I could have made that silly mistake.' Fortunately, I didn't and now I have another HD to my name.

So when the tutor said something along the lines of "I'm rather surprised that people had problems with this" I responded "you're assuming we recieved a decent primary education."

None the less, this is a thrid year uni class for pete sake!

Okay rant over.

Why thank you sailor!

I've never seen this "Yor've, wear've etc" business. Has it really come to this?
