Re: There vs Their vs They're

I worry about threads like this though, and how they will effect the reader and poster base of this board.

Many on here aren't as educated as the OP I suspect, and many may not even have the English language as their (correct:thumbsu:) first language, so to write a post with 100% accuracy in regards to both grammar and spelling is almost impossible for some posters.

I agree that posts that are almost incomprehensible due to spelling and grammatical errors are difficult to read and get through, but you also have to understand where that person is coming from in regards to their particular demographics, before criticising them in a public manner.

My suggestion would be that if you believe you are intelligent enough to assist any of the regular posters here in improving their respective accuracy of their posts, then do so in a private manner, be it through PM or through some other contact means.

I've never believed that repeated public examples of someone's shortcomings is a way to go about correcting anything in life, and this board could be a great example of what to do, rather then what not to do.

Another problem these days is auto correct on some software programs, especially those associated with phones.

(And yes, I'm not perfect also, I rush most of my posts and very rarely read over them before posting, and I myself have criticised others for mistakes in the past).

:)

I think everyone accepts that spelling and grammar are not essential for forum posting. And I agree, whether we spell correctly or are well schooled and all that doesn't matter. As we are all on this board for the love of a footy side, not for English!

However, in my case, I will agree with the OP that it can be slightly annoying on the odd occasion where someone's post contains a ridiculous amount of errors. But that is merely cause its my personal pet hate. Someone else's pet hate might be people telling them off about their spelling! Hahaha. Being a history, literature - strong student at high school I had the "get your spelling and grammar" message drilled in to me, which in turn has now made me very sensitive to spelling and grammar of other people. However, my own is still not great! So it's a bit hypocritical on my behalf! :s

So no harm is intended in my comments, is what I'm trying to say! I hope it didn't sound that way! But if it did, i humbly apologize!I was just attempting to sympathize with the OP.

I also agree with Mattys' point about the auto correct. I post off my iPhone alot and it sometimes completely changed words!

Sorry for the partial rant also, I was watching the cricket and Ponting went out short of his 50, and I had to release the frustration in some form.:p

Each to their own I say though, I actually don't mind the OP's post as it's not directed specifically at anyone really, it's more of a pet hate statement.:thumbsu:

Re: There vs Their vs They're

This is an internet footy forum... caring about that stuff here is like going to a skatepark in cragieburn and trying to stop the swearing.

Re: There vs Their vs They're

Bit precious to make a thread about it, it's not that big of a problem if people can't be bothered to get their "there, their, they're" or "Your vs You're" or "his and he's" correct.

It's obvious to understand what the person is saying, judging only by the context of the sentence without having to read the correct spelling.

Although some people should think about using paragraphs! Not sure if I'm the only one, but if I don't see any paragraphs and all I see is a block of text, definitely not reading that post.

Re: There vs Their vs They're

In terms of spelling, my pet hate is when people get mixed up with "loser" and "looser".

Re: There vs Their vs They're

Whats up with all the grandma please in here?

My pet hate is when people mix up biased & bias.

He is bias.

ok

My pet hat is incorrect use of Your vs You're.
What I took out of this post is that you have a pet hat. Are you Mr. Garrison? :p

I don't lose sleep about the fact that people around here are appalling at spelling. If, however, someone obviously cannot spell, as opposed to making a typo, I do internally question their intelligence. Call me crazy, but that's how it is.

Re: There vs Their vs They're

Who cares? If you have a problem with people with they're spelling an grammer I suggest that you go support upperclass Melbourne they have no problem as being seen as uneductaed over their do to there education we are just toothless Collingwood supporters GO PIES!!!!!

Re: There vs Their vs They're

Agreed. Spelling and grammar is atrocious on this forum. How can people not know the difference between his and he's? I reckon I had that covered by grade 1 after reading a few Dr Seuss books.

That's the one that does my head in completely I must admit.

Re: There vs Their vs They're

None of it bothers me in the slightest TBH.

Not the errors, nor the people attempting to 're-educate' the other person.

I just want to hear what the poster reckons about the issue at hand (and would hate to think that they ever felt bad because thier speling isn't as good as someone else)

This thread should be in the Nest really ( so if it suddenly disappears that's where it's gone) but it's taking the focus off Bucks and Mick and Eddy so maybe later! :)

I agree. This thread is not encouraging us to be inclusive. I'm pretty lazy with my written form so I can't be too critical about grammar. But why would we want to be that way?

I'm thankful for people's posts, regardless of grammatical correctness. IMHO this a footy forum, lets not get pseudo-intellectual...

Re: There vs Their vs They're

The His and HE'S one is a new phenomenon.

I see it on Facebook all the time. Almost as bad as idiots who use the virtual non-word 'addicting'.

While the word 'addicting' is technically a word, the context in which it can be used so rarely occurs it might as well not be a word.

Also, "I could care less". It's I COULDN'T care less. Which suggests you are at rock bottom in relation to your level of caring. You couldn't care any less than rock bottom.

To say "I could care less" means you could actually care less than you currently do.

God damn the I hate the way the internet puts the illiterates out on display for all to see. At least before, I didn't actually know how many people out there were so grammatically challenged.

Re: There vs Their vs They're

Delete the thread.

Why delete a thread that is proving quite popular with the posters? Plus it helps people to temporarily forget the Sinclairs, Woods, Malthouses and Careys of this world, which at present, is not such a bad thing, is it?

Re: There vs Their vs They're

You also have the issue of 'then' and 'than'. Whilst I enjoy the opinions and insights of my fellow Piemen I see no value in consolidating a stereotype.

+1. I'm not the greatest speller but He's v His makes me go a little nutty.

Most of the other stuff I could care less about....... or could I..... yes I could because it gets to me a little.

This is the one that always sticks out to me.

I only blame myself though, on various forums you get to know what to expect from posters, so I'm just waiting for it to pop up. Whereas if I just read the post without waiting for a mistake it would probably pass unnoticed plenty of the time.

Then when I do see it I decide to read it as typed, which is just silly, but it's what my brain wants to do. I wouldn't be surprised if I started doing it too, lucky I don't post that much.

Enjoy reading each and every post.
