It's not like someone accidentally dropping an O off of 'too'. Even though the meaning changes somewhat, they still at least SOUND the same.

HIS and HE'S don't even sound the same. You have to conciously type in 'his' instead of 'he's' so it can't be an accident. It's being done on purpose which is mighty scary.

I pity you if incorrect grammar on an ONLINE SPORTING FORUM gets you so riled up. You need to get out more if these are the issues in your life, little drama queen. Unless you're an english teacher you need to harden up and shut up about it, let people talk how they want to. ESPACII3lly WHEN I'T IS' ON A GAWD (DAMN) IN TO NET AFL FORUM BRO, UDIG?

Bad grammar doesn't usually annoy me but "His" instead of "He's" is the worst of them all.....

Seriously, how hard is it to get right!!!!??

my wife is a grammar nazi and it used to drive me mad. No matter what you do or how much you try people are still going to spell terribly and pronounce words or letters horribly wrong. In particular, the pronouncing of the letter H comes to mind. So many say "haych" and it's just so wrong but what are you going to do? Change the world or just get over it. I choose to ignore the bad pronunciations and terrible grammar so it doesn't affect me one bit.

As long as your kids (if you have them) are taught correct grammar and how to talk properly, that's all that matters.

Back on topic...I really hope that Thomas gets a fair shot at it this time around. At least a good block of at least a dozen games so we can all make judgement on whether he has a future or not. I am going to back Thomas in to make it this time and play some good footy.
 
Two of my pet hates relate to the differences between Australian English and American English. Here is a common one. In Australia:

Metre = Unit of measurement.
Meter = Instrument used to measure something.

Ise and ize is also often confused. In Australia we use ise.
 
You and I are connected in a way that is even more fundimental than our passion for AFL or Collingwood or Swanny's right boot.

We are connected by our desire to communicate. I write something. You sometimes read it. You write something. I read it. Sometimes I'll like it. Sometimes I'll reply. Sometimes I'll agree. Often I'll disagree and that can make things more interesting.

I'm hardly a paragon of the Queen's English, but commincation is a personal an interest of mine. I often take as much interest in the way a post is written (good or bad) as I do of its content.

People use incorrect grammar and spelling all the time. Me as much as anybody. I categorise these into four types. By the way, you probably won't find this in any textbook.

Type 1: Deliberate stylistic grammatical 'errors'. **These are NOT errors at all**. These are deliberate use of 'bad' English to aid communication. For example: 'FFS', 'WTF', :), starting sentences with 'and' and ending them with 'but'. These can be a very powerful communication aid. They can convey emotion. They can convey familiarity with the audience. They can make communication succinct. They can convey our own identity - compare "Golly gee, I love the way that Pendlebury lad plays!" versus "I :hearts: Pendles". The point of language is NOT to write or speak correctly. The point of language is to get the message across.

Type 2: Errors that the reader usually reads straight past - unless they're a grammar Nazi. For example, the correct use of 'which' and 'that'. Or mixing up 'good' (adjective) with 'well' (adverb), e.g. "I thought Pendlebury played good tonight" - it's bad grammar but everybody clearly understands the exact meaning of what is being said.

Type 3: Errors that make text difficult to read and/or understand. e.g. Mixing up 'it's' and 'its', mixing up 'they're' and 'their' (see Snag's OP for a description of correct use), writing very long sentences, typos, and spelling mistakes. Examples of this that I often make myself are to use incorrect prepositions (at/on/in/over/under, etc) and simply missing out words. I find that the iPad, as convenient as it is, often pollutes my text (it often can't keep up with my typing - particularly 'T-H'' and the spell checker often introduces mistakes - eg, erroneously changing 'its' to 'it's'). A mistake that I often see others making is to mix up 'then' and 'than'. Type 3 mistakes really should be avoided. What's the point of communicating if people can't understand us? Or if people give up trying to understand what we've written? We all have our own standard and acceptance threshold of what these are - consider your audience.

Type 4: Errors that change the meaning of what is being said. A player "resigning" instead of "re-signing" is the classic example of this. Nobody wants to make these mistakes.

Not sure I should be posting in here as I have a real love affair with commas.:(

Personally I don't have a huge problem with grammar errors on internet forums. I do however cringe if the media can't get it right.

Just pointing out this thread I remembered because the Frankston VFL thread has moved away from Freeman and become a grammar discussion. Who would've guessed!

I can't recall Snag Breac. Before my time but I know we have lost some really good posters on here in the past few years sadly.

Edit: Just checked, not before my time as seems to have last posted in 2016. I wonder why she left? Looking at her posting history, was a good poster.
