Player Watch Ed Allan

Allan is obviously physically a better chance, yet the outcome remains largely similar at senior level - that’s the frustrating part to me

The two are not comparable. Fin didn’t have any weapons, while Ed has them pouring out of every crevice

HDM is contracted (for some reason). The likes of Smit, Allan, Ryan & Sully could be in trouble
Msybe Ryan.

Sully isn’t young so he doesn’t really count.

Allan might be traded but will not be delisted

Smit probably stays, I think last year for him was wasted somewhat playing out of position in key defence. Now with Cox gone and Steene in the seniors he gets the chance to play in his true position.

Fin was regularly one of the best in the VFL so he must have had some weapons. What are Allan's weapons and why does he seem unable to display them in AFL games? I guarantee if played next week in the AFL, his apparently excellent VFL game this week would seem an anomaly.

For everyone wanting to delist Allan, there are others ahead of him.

How can we justify Sullivan ever playing again? He is 28 and will always be a VFL player.
Smit? Laughable he is on a list. Has not shown anything
DeMattia? Shown nothing. Who the F signed him until 2027?
Ryan/Jiath? Expect one of these to not be offered a contract. Both have shown good signs in the VFL. Both will be going into their 5th and 4th season respectivly and can't see them getting another go some time soon.

Then we have the likely retirements of a few players. Pendles, Steele, Howe.
But nah, lets delist Ed after a few bad AFL games, who has shown good signs and has potential at 21 years old

It's make or break for Ryan in 2026.
He either get's some AFL games or is gone.

Look at his two goals and the ease he moved players aside. Fin stats wise looked okay in the vfl, he was a reasonable VFL accumulator which didn’t translate. I kept on expecting to step up and never did.

I talk up Allan to counter all the tripe that gets talked about him on here. Some seem to prefer Ryan and HDM.

He has pace, height, endurance. Plus he showed on week-end he can balance, and nail them at pace.

I just don't see it with Allan, but if we're gonna play him in the seniors we simply have to put him in the middle. He does not work on the wing, you see glimmers of what he can do but he takes way too long to get into the game and just doesn't get enough of the ball.

I know it was a dead rubber game over a year and half ago, but he looked way more impactful when he played in the middle in that game against Melbourne in the last round of 2024. Wouldn't mind them trying that again.

That being said i do feel like he's nearing what happened to Fin Macrae. Great in the VFL, but not taking his chances in the seniors. Which explains why he's been in and out of the team, because unlike guys like Anderson and Steene, he hasn't played well enough to earn a good run of games in the seniors.

We won’t NEED to be delisting many young players. For a young player it’s a good time to be at colllingwood with the number of over 30s we have on the list as the club will have the flexibility to give to give players an extra year if there’s any doubt. Early days but I’d say the only player at risk as this stage is HDM. Zero chance Howes gets booted.

Don't know about that. I think we're going to try to add senior players to replace veterans. Which would mean the number of young hopefuls remaining the same, but as usual, some off replaced by some on.

His height is currently irrelevant as he doesn't use it for any advantage, but he can sure run. He's looking really good this year as he's really starting to take them on with his pace. And you're right about hitting those kicks so well at full pace - it was a very good sign. Last year, I thought he had little chance, but he's looking really promising this year.

Just reading through the last couple of pages, am I in bizzaro world?!?!? Comments are mostly positive.

Like a lot of comments play him in the middle his next senior's game.

I didn't see the VFL game so can't comment on his goals. If we are going to persevere with Allan, I do wish we would play him in the midfield so we can make a more informed decision on him. It doesn't help much when we sign up two guys in HDM and Jiath for 2027 who should be delisted ahead of Allan.

Why would Allan not be delisted?

Sully is still a delist option, but I take your point.

Smit is as good as gone for my mind. Just has not really developed. Not sure where Cochran sits either

We're in an unusual position though without depth players to cut. Sully the only one really. plus 2-4 retirees - I'm including Membrey alongside our 3 champions. That's 5 at most (I'd bet on at least one of our veterans going around again). Hopefully no one we want to keep wants out.

Assumedly we will have already added a mid-season draftee. That's 4 vacancies at most for draft and trade period - not enough if we want to be active - which seems almost certain with senior players likely to go. Ryan would get it to 5 vacancies at most. I'll be shocked if Smit is retained without having a really significant spike in performance. Admittedly, I was shocked when he was retained last year too.

No way we will delist Allan. Insiders would know even from his VFL performances that he has tools and is above that class. If we delist a rival might pick him up for nothing.

I agree with this except the last part, why don't we give him a run of games in the middle, I 100% remember the Melbourne game but then haven't really seen him in the middle much since. Steene and Anderson look good as they play in right positions.
