I tend to go early. I'm predicting a Ned Long style rise. I actually think he'll be better than Ned. It is early but I'm confident. I've been wrong before though
I think they would complement each other - grunt from one and explosiveness from the other.
If Ed does have a breakout year, our midfield issues will ease considerably.

You're spot on. If Ned improves this year, he'll take a few with him. If we can burst from the middle from Nick and Ed, we'll be up there again. HH was the other that really caught the eye

Ned will always be important because of his size and physicality. He can take that physical punishment going up against mids like Cripps allowing Nick the freedom to attack.

Yet look at the world’s strongest men none are short
And if you look at the world’s shortest men, none of them are tall.

Yes, Ed as a 20 year old last year in the VFL went from a 18 possession wingman to a 23/24 possession mid. As a 21 year old I was hoping see him nudge 30 possessions this year.

Ed's a bit of a unicorn in the sense of his size, speed and endurance but he's still working on his fundamentals, pressure 'Fly's favourite', consistency and disposal. I thought he was reasonable by hand on the weekend but kicking/decision making was a little inconsistent.

Ed burst from the centre three times leaving GWS players in his wake and with skill and poise should have kicked an additional 2 goals. That's where CFC needs him to be, a four goal mid rather than the two he kicked.

Exciting times for Ed!

He will win a Brownlow if he starts kicking 4 goals a game as a mid

The thing is he isn’t as good as some make him out to be but he is also not as bad as others make him out to be.

If he fails to become an elite mid he can still end up with an important role in the side as we can see he is starting to fill out. In a year or so he will have the size to play a defensive role on a Cripps or Bont type while also having the speed and endurance to play on the elite outside mids

Yes I hope he can become an offensive weapon but if he can’t he can still develop into a very important role player

I see him as our Crisp replacement at this stage.

That’s a flatteringly high bar.
Are you underrating Crisp or overrating Ed?

The truth is, as said above, that he is neither as good or bad as others highlight.
And has potential.

My concern is that the occasions he shows it have been when there is no pressure in the game.

If Crisp is in our starting midfield this year we're in real trouble. I think he's going to be phased out bar a stunning turnaround. He doesn't have the brains or unique traits to play deep into his older age IMO. An amazing contributor for many years but needs to be surpassed for us to move forward.

RE Allan, I'll believe the hype when I see him do something half decent up against a first string midfield. If he can be a decent role player I'll be pleased.
Why are we in trouble with Crisp as a starting mid?

More of a best-case-scenario. I’ve gone on record after his fancy Melbourne game a couple years ago and said he’s more likely to be delisted than breakout, given what he had dished up to that point - and I was right in my prediction about how last year went for him.

There’s still a chance he becomes a good long-term player for us, and I really hope he does! We need it!

If he does, I predict we get a similar player to Crisp. We’d be quite happy if Ed has a career peak akin to Crisp’s.

1 goal mids are gold and rare

I loved his composure in that running goal. He was at full pace and was able to line it up and kick straight
Hope it becomes a common sight

I reckon he is tracking okay and will make it, with potential to be a game breaker. Anyway so far he is tracking way ahead of any other our recruits over the past few years, based on performance and number of games player. Mind you that is nothing to particularly gloat about. The other guys who have some runs on the board are Steele, Hayes and Harvey H. Not including this years draft, these are the guys who are most likely to make it. Interested to see if Steene continues to develop. Everyone else is looking like a very long shot, with a couple ideally would be out the door.

I don't see much doubt about Allan being an AFL player. Tank, speed and size will be enough.

His 2025 was already quite good. Take another step and he'll be a regular this year.

The question will be whether he remains more of a hard running outside player or can become a centre square mid. He's shown ability there but not consistently.
