Player Watch Ed Allan

It's time to play him solely as a mid. Not yet though, let him keep doing what he's doing in the VFL. If only he was able to go forward and be a genuine target. Needs one more string to his bow.

He is Useless on the Wing

Midfield is only his real position he can be Descent At

My eyes tell me Ed's skills are more than adequate the numbers back that up too (2026 AFL stats). Effective disposals on par with the other 3, Disposal and kicking efficiency excellent:

It’s more the broken and missed tackles, letting guys run around him or outmark him. Going missing when the heat is on. Sloppy handballs or fumbles that kill momentum. Getting lost and not being able to make himself a threat in space.

Really, it boils down to intensity and footy IQ.

Think of how someone like Swadling can already rack up the footy. He’s not faster or fitter or stronger than Allan, but he knows where he needs to be to be useful and get involved.

Think of how Anderson can impact a game despite only having a dozen or so disposals. Intensity. Tackles. Willing the ball forward. Marking. Kicking a goal or knocking the ball into space for someone else.

Slowdown Tiger - you nominated Howes as a “delist” a few weeks ago.

I’d be holding Ed and hoping he comes good. One more year, at least.

Howes may still get delisted, you realise? I’m enjoying his transition to a defender and hope he comes good.

A few players will have to be delisted at the end of the year.

Howes is not getting delisted.
Aside from Murphy he’s the most promising young tall KPD we’ve unearthed in many years.

What he’s doing is promising, but let’s not pretend that Charlie Dean wasn’t doing the same.
Dean was a better VFL player (than many), but I don’t think Howes is as physically limited. He’s in an AFL system at a younger age, bigger, and hasn’t had preseasons derailed by injury - should have more room for improvement

Dean was pretty young, too. I like what Howes is doing and hope he can become our next Moore or Frampton, cause we desperately need one coming through.

Hm - that’s a uniquely overstated view of Dean. He’s was never close to what Howe’s doing.
What is most impressive about what Howes is doing is how quickly he’s adapted to VFL level and then how quickly he’s adapted to this positional change. He’s not doing something that Charlie Dean never did, in terms of performance.

He was, but from memory he had his first two seasons derailed by injury. Hopefully Noah is different

We won’t NEED to be delisting many young players. For a young player it’s a good time to be at colllingwood with the number of over 30s we have on the list as the club will have the flexibility to give to give players an extra year if there’s any doubt. Early days but I’d say the only player at risk as this stage is HDM. Zero chance Howes gets booted.

HDM is contracted (for some reason). The likes of Smit, Allan, Ryan & Sully could be in trouble

Come on Spinny what a load of bs. Dean was one of the best VFL defenders, dominated games down back. He won VFL player of the year at 21 which is why we drafted him fmd.

Howes has settled in well but you are going off very early on him! Lots of water to go under the bridge.

This is why Jakob needs a chance in the seniors to see what he can do.
Parker seems to be favoured, whilst TJ, Ryan, J Cochran are being developed in the VFL. Ryan being a bit Vanilla could be writing on the wall.

When did we see Dean taking pack marks like Howes, and body size is also a major difference.
If Dean was showing Howes potential why did we delist him?

Of course he had VFL accolades but they failed to translate to AFL.

Let’s not derail the thread but Dean was a bloody good VFL defender who obviously couldn’t translate at AFL level. Howes has played two games, let’s not go to early on him just yet.

I’m more than happy to go early. I only see bad altitude/application as a risk.

Howes is looking really good - I will withold from saying he looks really really good. If he keeps improving even incrementally, he's the one I'm most positive about (players under 23).

Is Allan becoming the new fin mcrae? Just dominating the lower level, but an absolute deer in the headlights at the AFL level.

Fin never showed Allan’s potential at VFL and was even worse at AFL, unless you are talking purely about clearances.
