not sure if its a confidence thing, fitness issue or he simply fails to read the play/situation ahead of him - saw him slow to walking pace a few times when we had possession of the ball whist other teammates were spreading hard

He sort of hovers on the edges of contests, never seems to throw himself in with intent. Almost timid.

I don't blame him coz what these guys do is terrifying and heroic but if you're going to be in that space you gotta do what everyone else does.

Not sure if you can teach that kind of bravery/self-endangering determination. But what do I know.

He's not soft, if that is what you are suggesting.

I didn't use that word deliberately, because I don't think it's a deficiency to not have the sort of insane bravery that some of them do. But he does seem to always be half hearted in his efforts at the ball. And I'm not really seeing his unique skill to make up for that.

I must have been watching a different game , I thought he looked out of place today and not up to it.

He gifted Adelaide two goals from errors - one handball that was cut off by Rankine in the 1st and then a stupid 50m penality in the last .
Please!! Your credibility is tarnished by that final sentence. I was sitting right above that moment when Rankine intercepted what was a lovely and totally appropriate handpass and a brilliant footballer pounced and intercepted it. That fifty was also unlucky as he did not intentionally knock the pill out of his hands and plenty of our boys have done far worse over the years.

I thought he looked a very likely prospect who still has a lot to learn.

He also did a lot of good things.
Even Nick handballed a few to the opposition.
Was a very difficult day to play.

Agree, Rankine is usually very good at milking frees and 50s.
Bit stiff with the 50 m penalty.
Thankfully Rankine missed chances today that proved costly.

That handball was horrific let’s be honest, he had multiple better options and chose the wrong one, not a fan of sugarcoating a pretty bad clanger there

Thought he was pretty good, for a 20yr old. Didn't look out of place and got enough of the ball, the 50 was unlucky and the intercept hand pass was lesson learned (pace of game vs VFL), I think he just needs a run of games to gain experience. Was he worse than Lipinski(he is surely quicker)

He’s not afraid of contact when it comes to him and doesn’t avoid it, but what he does is simply ball watching so can see where sherrife is coming from. I don’t know why that’s how he plays his footy naturally, wonder what position he played as a junior but I would have hoped he would have had that coached out of his game already. Not all hope is lost but he’s not staying in the 22 when Mitchell is waiting in the wings if he doesn’t show more intent and wins more contests.

I cannot believe the carry on over a brilliant piece of footy by Rankine. Can we simply admire the catlike reflexes of the opposition player? I have seen our boys do similar things on many occasions and it was their judgement rather than a poor choice of options by the opponent which caused the turnover.

Nope because it was just a clanger when you have clear better options ahead of you and the handball was also slow and off target.. I don’t get the sugar coating of it

Ed, at 194cm is too timid as an inside mid and too slow as an outside runner. So I am not sure where he fits in. Would love for him to become a Cripps like player but I don't think that's in his DNA.

What is his role?
Spot on. Right now he is depth for injuries and plays a role in the team. He is not a key player right now. However he is only 20 years old so let’s hope he develops some instinct and competitiveness.

He’s a developing player. Learning when to zig and when to zag. When that instant decision making becomes ingrained and he becomes less hesitant, we will know where he’s at.

Where was Longs career at, at the same age two years ago?

Slow? He won the 20m sprint at the AFL combine.
He grew about 15cm in one year and got a back problem as a result - in his draft year.
He's 20 years old.
His issue is really just developing the self belief and confidence that he belongs at the level.
He won't be a Cripps, but potentially more like a Kouta.
We just need to give him more game time.

A few times he seemed to get a little lost in play. Still seems a little unsure when to go.
I think it's a confidence thing once he gets more regular senior footy, should hopefully sort itself out.
If he wasn't the same at VFL I'd agree that it's just adjusting to tempo.

Don't believe he is actually slow. However, it's a fact that you don't have to be quick as an outside runner. Two examples from our team tell you that: Steele, Lipinski. There are many more. It's all about running capacity, not speed, and we're told his capacity is very good. If he doesn't make it, it won't be because he doesn't run fast enough.

Its crazy what expectations some supporters have of a 20 year old
Mids in their 3rd seasons should be progressing. If he’s going to be a good player then most in that mould by their third season are becoming well established in the best 22. Look how good Freijah for the dogs has been in his first season. We kept waiting and waiting for Macrae to kick on and he never did. Mids kick on early, talls take time. I don’t think there’s any overblown expectations tbh.

He looked ok today. Hopefully continues tk build this season and cement a spot

Thought he was good

Great tackle

Rankine intercept was unlucky

Almost kicked a goal from 50m

Seemed more physical today

Just like Corey gault had a massive growth spurt

Put it this way shown more than macrae...Ryan...Dean...hdm

Will be a solid player ....but not a star imo
