Fly mentioned in his presser that the Swans always come back at the end (Eg: our game last year which we lost), so he didn’t feel comfortable making the sub until we were 6 goals up with 5 mins left.

The sub isn’t only about who you bring on, it’s also about who you take off for them.

Once again Fly provides insight into the coaches’ plans for the game, including the strategy for the sub against the Swans in particular. Who’d have thought they know what they’re doing?

Sometimes it seems that Fly has to justify these moves, in the face of fan criticism. Ridiculous if that is the case.

Allan will get a good go when his time comes.

One thing I noticed last round was his inability to use his pace. It was flagged as a concern when drafted and I see nothing has changed. Twice I watched Swans players who had been on all game, run away from Ed when he had the fresh legs. With his testing over 20m being elite, that shouldn't be happening against tired players.

It certainly looked like Fly only made the sub call when the game was won. Bringing on the sub with 15 minutes left to play and being 5 goals up was hardly a decision to inject fresh legs to get an advantage.

perhaps it showed a lack of faith, waiting until the game was basically won before pulling the trigger

he needs to have a great month in the twos to earn a spot in this side ( unless injuries opens up positions )

More concerned about winning…..and given we were in exactly the same position late last year and got steamrolled in the last ten minutes after being in a similar dominant position……… Fly played it safe.

He’ll obviously go back to the seconds but by all accounts his form is pretty good. But it’s a tough team to crack into especially with Houston and Shultz to return. Even highly credentialled players like WHE are likely to be back in the VFL soon.

as i said, done nothing when he came on. i want him to succeed, but in my opinion, i would really like to see him dominating the VFL so when he does come in, he is ready to go.
Maybe being a sub is harder for a younger player to pick up the speed of the game or whatever, i can see that, but the coach chose to start Sullivan ahead of him which i was in agreement with.
i too trust Sullivan in a physical contest over Allan at this stage

Isn't a tactical sub used for tactical reasons? Not just to give a player a certain amount of time on the ground for the sake of it.

At the end of the day, we want to win the match. And if tactically it wasn't the right situation to bring on the sub, then so be it.

You're picking a sub with the full knowledge that they might get subbed in in the first 10 minutes, but also will only come in if it's felt they'll improve the team - or once the result is decided. He was subbed in late for the same reason he was made sub - they had more faith in the other 22 to execute the plan that day and the 22 did a fantastic job.

Depth and competition for spots is a beautiful problem to have.

Ed is a good one and having to work his arse off to get a regular game will only make him better.

I think it will come to whoever breaks out more out of Allan or Long. Both at 194cm is bigger than Curnow, Barass, Mihocek, Sicily, Darling. You get the point. A key position size player playing midfield.
Unless both break out to at least 80% of two other 194cm beasts like Bont or Cripps, can't see it working out with both in one team come crunch time. It's like the midfield version of 2023s Marcov vs Nobel.

From a distance I see the two as different types. To me, Long appears to be a stronger, more agricultural type, whereas Allen appears to be more refined but less rugged. There is a place for each but perhaps not in the same team at the same time.
To use Fly's anaolgy of the seasons, Long appears to be a 'Winter' player whereas Allen appears to be a 'Spring' type.

If both develop as expected they can complement each other. Ed is a big boy but can play outside just like Nick.
