I'm watching the replay this morning as it's nice to re-watch without all the emotion and focus on specific players.

I've been watching Ed closely and he's done some really nice things. One thing he's done is to remain calm when he's got the ball in tight, to trust his teammates to work for him by moving into space for the releasing handball (which we do better than any other team) then pulling the trigger at the right moment. It's not an easy skill to master and it's dependent on knowing your teammates, knowing the system and backing yourself to make the right handpass rather than rush a hospital pass under perceived pressure.

He's also worked up the wing to the 50 and spotted up teammates for shots at goal with some well weighted kicks.

I still think there's a lot of growth in Ed's game and we have a very good player in development... This is a good sign that he's getting comfortable at the level and will find a place in the long term.
Great post - and very astute observations.
His ability to hold his nerve, waiting for team mates to move before disposing is impressive for a kid with a hand full of games.
And his ability to chain through multiple sprinting efforts will be a big advantage to the team in breaking lines.

Really solid footage, the kind of stuff that I find harder to notice watching live at the ground (get too emotionally sucked in!). He gets up and down that wing effortlessly, and has been involved in some rebound 50 work from deep in the opposition forward line - something Sidey, Crisp & Lipinski have been really good at throughout the years.

Yeah even harder to see on the TV. I am guessing he was asked to improve on his work rate when he got dropped after GWS. He’s gone back and come back as a machine.

If you go on the afl app in the "stats" section it allows you to watch every single one of a players disposals/involvements in a game.

Anyway, I had a look at Ed in his games against North and Hawthorn, and what stood out was effective he was running up and down the wing, going from contest to contest and very often being an outlet player. Kind of reminds be of Brad Hill in Hawthorn's glory years.

Ed had a few errant kicks against Hawthorn, although this seems more related to poor decision making in those 2-3 instances, as opposed to being a bad kick, as he regulary hit up targets well with the rest of his disposals.

Just needs to put on another 6-8kgs now and be abit more aggressive in contested situations and I think we potentially have a real weapon here.

Really pleased for Ed, he is still definitely very much a work in progress but he has taken great strides of late.

Ed shows that for a young inexperienced player, a consistent block of games is crucial to let them feel like they belong and start to play with less uncertainty.

Hope that message comes through when the time comes for Westy to get a gig, and for that matter Hayes and Ryan and De Mattia.

please change my mind (not having a go), but whats the difference between ed allen and caleb poulter?
Poulter is a ball chaser who doesn’t follow team structures
