Dempsey plays wing. The other two haven't been when ive watched. Holmes is a good comparison though of the type of player that Ed might be able to become.

I think this is why we've been playing Allan this year. We want an option with his athletic profile against the Cats in particular. Steele in the MSD taken for similar reasons - if I'm correct that he's a quick outside type.

Wasn’t one of his better games but hopefully that was one of his new “worse” games where he still got involved. I’m still hopeful he can continue to grow and become a regular best 22 contributor for the next decade

He needs to pick some players and spend a preseason with them. I'm thinking Nick, Long, IQ & Pendles. I'm sure he's already a good trainer, but he’ll benefit from getting in the gym with one or two of those four names I've mentioned.

Seems to be a bit of a trend with him at the moment, which isn't a knock because he finishes the games well, it's just shows that he's building his confidence. There'll be a 4 quarter performance soon no doubt.

Fitness obviously not an issue, seems to run games out very well. Just looks like he needs a bit more gym work and confidence in taking on the contested ball and backing himself. Good in space and will run and carry.

No, but the nature of finals footy is that every team will take a player or two in that can’t be fully trust. The key is the strength of player around him.

FWIW I think the strength of our bottom 6 has been a major factor in our resurgence this year.

Our bottom 6 have been solid all year, you often look through the oppo 23 and say we can expose them here and here etc.
We have alot of those cracks covered.
Re Ed, development is there, when you are in it to win in a final series, yeah, it's a risk reward for those you are taking in on trust. My concern with the present version Ed and finals, what's the reward we would get?

He can obviously run and has some skill.

Just needs to get his tackling right and understand how to defend.

He has all the tools - he just needs to find the confidence to go when he has the opportunity, as Ned Long has done.
As you say, getting more games into him will be part of the answer.

Any Ryan Lonie was one of our best in the 2002 grand final and was probably more outside than Ed.

Yeah, but very different role. Lonie was obviously an attacking half back

He still needs to go harder into the contest and put his body over the ball when needed, but he's starting to find space and therefore the ball on the wing and he's building into games and running them out really well.

More games at the top level is the best way to improve him at the moment. A few extra kgs of muscle would be great but he'll need another preseason for that.

The positive out of the dropped mark is that he flew for it.
Previously he wouldn’t have gone, so that’s an improvement.

I said this a few weeks ago, Pies need to play him 4-5 weeks straight. Not drop him after one game.
So far he has shown he is capable at this level and I think after 30 odd games and I hope that in 1-2 years he will be the next Ned Long type. Some players take longer than others to feel comfortable at the top level.

Will be interesting to see what happens come finals. He is close to best 22 but not sure he is right now with a full squad. However he has the endurance to run up and down the field all day. Come finals and the warmer weather that might just get him a gig.

Definitely and I think it's why we need to keep playing him. I'm assuming Fly is letting him know that there's a permanent role in this side if he wants it.

Didn't get a huge amount of it but on a night when there were few highlights outside of Checkers 150th and Pendles turning back the clock I thought Ed looked like he belonged tonight. That's the first game where I didn't think twice about him - he went every time he had to incl. a couple of nice marks and never looked off the pace.

Clearly belongs at AFL level now. A very encouraging intercept mark. Very good handling at ground level. Much improved handballing. Could easily have had a couple of goals. His running ability is an important addition and he's able to find more of the ball than WHE in a similar role.

Nah. I don't agree. He's too flakey for me. Sometimes he goes hard at the contest, other times he chooses not to. He doesn't seem to want to get involved enough.
