Let's just remember that 100 odd players were picked up before him..

Yes I realise Garlett, Jammo etc were taken as rookies also, but they've done the hard work and at the time didn't have to break in to a real quality side.

Good luck to him though :thumbsu:

If anything... someone like Curnow has shown he has the will power to do the hard work more than any of the abovementioned players at the time they were selected...

From a floating player to a dominating in and under player in 2 years fixing alot of his "weaknesses" tells me this kid has enough will to exceed...

Fair enough, but on the flip side it seems to be a general rule that recruiters prefer to take the U18's with more room for development in the ND.....Barlow also slipped through many hands...I wouldn't take it as a huge knock.

GWS are the ones that really surprised...I think they made a blue not taking Curnow. Perhaps the ankle fracture scared some off.

Noticed a huge difference between his early highlights and the most recent highlights. Seems a lot more controlled with the footy, more poise, obviously stronger, but also much cleaner by foot. He actually moves a little like Murph. We develop midfielders better than any team in the comp, so it'll be interesting to see just how much further we can improve him. Like this selection a lot. We always do well on the rookie draft, because our list managers do their homework. It's not luck.

No we dont!!!
I think the current premiers are streets ahead in that department (as much as it pains me to say). If we are to be fair dinkum about being a top 4 contender, we need to improve our midfield. At times in 2010, we were way off the pace in that area and it is simply not good enough. That round 18 game springs to mind!!!

I don't know if this has been mentioned in this thread yet or anywhere for that matter, but has every1 noticed in the CFC video highlights that Curnow has both shoulders heavily strapped? A bit like someone else who wears the navy blue? Hehe

I'm certainly not pre-empting this guy will be anything like Juddy but I just found it interesting, maybe he idolises the great man

Looks a dead ringer for Kerr I reckon.

How much development did they put into Ball and Jolly?

Probably not as much as they did with Wellingham, Sidebottom, Pendlebury, Blair, Beams, Thomas and Macaffer i’m guessing

Look, we do OK in terms of development but we are far from being the best!

Those filthy bastards managed to develop the like of Pendlebury into a midfielder not out of place in the top echelon and improved the likes of Wellingham, Sidebottom and Beams into bonafide 1st choice mids which elevated them to premiers IMO

And this is where we need to improve. We have the A graders, now we need to deepen our rotation pool for on-ball. We need the likes of Lucas, Yarran, McLean () and even Walker to add to the numbers here and spread the load. Even a Curnow or perhaps Kerr could step up (ala Blair from the filth)

If we can progress in this area and fingers crossed one of the talls we picked up this year can play a role down back (perhaps Watson) next year then that changes the complexion of our side immensely and could catapult us into top 4 contention. Although there is stiff competition throughout the league

Pendlebury and Thomas were both top five picks, surely it's not a surprise they've become good midfielders. Macaffer is a forward. So what Collingwood have done with Wellingham, Sidebottom, Blair and Beams makes them streets ahead does it? When they have Swan, Jolly, Ball, Didak to take the heat off them.

Who would be unimpressed with how Kreuzer, Warnock, Jacobs, Ellard, Lucas, Robinson, Yarran, Joseph and others have been developing at Carlton so far? A bit more maturity from the playing group and a bit more luck with injuries and I think you'll see we're right up there in terms of quality and development as far as midfielders go.

I hope you're right!
I believe the ingredients are there, we just need a few more to progress and stand up and the upside will be there to be seen

Has Parrot hacked your account?

Ellard hasn't really done anything other than keep on grinding until an opportunity came up. I don't think Mitch has developed significantly as a player...still goes about it the same way he did Round 1 2009. Yarran is still fringe 22 and Joseph regressed this year IMO.

Can't deny Collingwood have done a fantastic job in turning the likes of the above into solid contributors (at worst). Harry O a deserved AA, Toovey and Ben Reid from laughing stocks to footballers...pains me, but give them some credit.

I thought they were talking exclusively about mids??...although O'Brien, Toovey and Reid are running defenders.

If you are talking about mids, Hine tends to go for those that don't need a lot of development, so I see their success as largely drilling structures and gameplans....those they have taken who were bottom aged or needed more significant development haven't necessarily come on...(e.g. Ryan Cook).

So Ellard hasn't done anything different to Blair. Those guys are developing fine for young players, Joseph had a different role but still performed well in the B&F. My point was Collingwood's midfield also had fully developed Jolly, Ball, Didak and Swan which makes life a lot easier even for Pendlebury and Thomas.

Collingwood were the best team this year no doubt but the way people carry on it sounds like they have the best recruiter, the best coaches, the best game plan, the best players, the best officials, the best development staff and so on. It's pretty lame. Our coaches are doing a great job developing our midfield, to say Collingwood are streets ahead (when they're streets ahead in everything else too apparently) just because of one successful season is a load of shit.

Are those blokes midfielders now?
