Debutants, young and old, look at home in the AFL

Notable newbies:

Ed Curnow, 21, (rookie list Box Hill VFL) Carlton midfielder
24 disposals, 5marks, 1 goal, 7 tackles.
Excelled in every facet of his first AFL game as a midfielder. Neat in the clinches, and able to find space to link play, his superb first game is further evidence that the best VFL players can make the transition to the elite level. His emergence puts pressure on the oft-injured Brock McLean, and his tackling in the clinches could help ease the pressure on star Blues A-graders Marc Murphy and Chris Judd.

Cotchin: Is he a bit...touched in the head?
Russell: Not sure but I reckon we'd better call Duigan.

Tis a shame he is just too old to be afforded a Norwich Rising Star. .. I was looking forward to seeing him get ignored like Garlett until late in the season and going under the radar. ..

Hope he has a good year, whether he stays in the seniors or heads back to the VFL after a few games. ..

It is a shame as he only misses out by just under 2 months Clay.

From memory, I think to be eligible, a player has to be under 21 as at January 1st.

Curnow and Mclean >>>>> Curnow and Carrazzo.

Curnow could easily play Carrazzo's role.

Ed might even hit more targets as an outside midfielder who can also get in and under to win his own ball.

If Mclean gets his body right, that's the change we should make.

Carrazzo has been one of the players people have been saying needs to be replaced in the side for years, yet he just keeps performing and keeping his spot in the side week in and week out. Consistently keeps his man out of the game yet the focus is always on the things he can't do. His position and role means he doesn't get in and under very often, and hasn't been for about 3 or 4 years.

Its probably a good thing in a way. Doesn't have as much hype surrounding him 'getting the nomination' so he can go about his business as best he can. That said though, fair to say he'd already have his nomination out of the way by now!

I loved watching this guy play last weekend. Everything that can be said about him already has been said in this thread, so I will just say that I agree with everyone else that he looked great for us. I was excited when we drafted him, and he justified that against the Tigers. The question that I have though is when we have a fully-fit lineup, how many of McLean, Curnow, Ellard, Robbo, Joseph and similar players can we afford to play at any one time?

Yeah, two guys like that plus Juddy is probably a pretty good starting point. I still think that Brock is the best of those players when healthy, and I would love to see him string some games together. However, if Curnow and Robinson both keep performing, Brock will have to show some seriously good form in the VFL if he wants to push one of those two out of the lineup.

Would be hard to push out if he keeps the form from Rd1.....handy cash cow even if he loses his spot after 3.

I was watching the game in a pub so my attention purely on his performance was not completely focused, he just did not stand out to me.

There were a few moments where I actually worried when he had the ball in his hands. I think someone said earlier the one standout play, but other than that, his performance was so so.

I blame guns for constantly distracting me with shouts of Army and Thornton... and lets not forget W.A blues own Lucas.

I know I will get blasted, but I still feel like he is borderline at Carlton.

Fair enough. He played a great game I thought but it has only been one game. I think he'll cement a spot soon enough but it is a position we have some depth in so he's not home and hosed just yet. If he keeps last weeks form up though he'll be safe.

Looked the goods on Thursday, great debut, awesome second and third efforts, and has a nice tank on him.

Great to see Mr Ed is no one game wonder, he is a gem and recruiting masterstroke, his contested possies and attack on the ball is inspiring and disposal is quality, hopefully all doubters onhim have been won over
