Ed Curnow

I reckon the Pies will make a real effort to shut him down and cut off the supply to our other mids next weekend like they did to McLean last year. Hope his team mates step up and help him out this time.

Yeah if the Wobbles target Curnow then its up to Robbo, Gibbs, Murphy, Simpson and Judd to give him a chop out and help a young up and comer. .. Don't think he'll take a backward step though. ..

What I'm noticing about Ed besides his super work ethic and neat skills is he's also just such a smart footballer and reads it so well. So many times he seems to be in the exact right spot for the fall of the ball, to receive, give off etc.

Not only does he make life easier for Judd and co by being in under those packs he's also a very handy "mop up" player, if you know what I mean.

I love this bloke!

He runs hard, neat skills by hand and foot, knows his limitations, works both ways and is just super consistent throughout the game. A great addition to our midfield.

I see a lot of comments about his work ethic. Probs coz he used to play in Adelaide's squad. As much as i dislike the Crows i got to admit they do drill their players with a lot of discipline and have a very professional environment under Neil Craig so Carlton like his 2nd shot at AFL so it's not really surprising that he's relishing the opportunity.

He already had it before he got there. Broke their running records as a first year rookie.

prolly true bro......but was like a fly in a jar at U18 level too...and a junior 800m champ, or something similar IRRC.

got a good one there

Edit: beat me you bastrad :p

This recruiting "master stroke" is making the decision to get McLean look much less so. Based on Ed's early performances (and especially when combined with Robbo's) I'm struggling to see how McLean fits back into the side ... even if he does finally get his body right.

Michael Barlow was a one of a kind freak who somehow slipped through the cracks. Just because Ed had a great 2010, doesn't mean he'll be Barlow mk II.

Expect him to be a solid player for us, don't expect him to become an top shelf midfielder like Barlow.

Too early to be claiming he will become a top shelf midfielder....?

This annoys me.

Mclean was recruited one year before Curnow.

If Curnow was that great, why was he passed up in a skinny 2009 draft?

Curnow has already been through an AFL club, so he benefited from that experience with his fitness and preparation. Still have to wonder how Ed would be rated if he had won Box Hill's B & F and placed in the Liston Medal as a teenager. Amazing that the likes of Garlett, Curnow, Barlow and Jamison can be passed up because they're not "kids".

Great to see Ed going well. By the descriptions I am reading sounds like he is a bit of a Brett Ratten type player. Loved Ratten as a player by the way.

I never said he wouldn't. I just said you shouldn't expect him to be. Considering where he was coming from, it was a reasonable call.

Still, we've played 2 VFL quality teams so i'd expect him to dominate.
Having said that I really like him and think he's exactly what we need.
This week is huge for Ed. As well as the rest of the team.

Smash em :thumbsu:

I know that the McLean decision seemed to be the right one at the time. All I mean is that it now looks like he'll never quite make it into the role he was earmarked for, thus it's become something of a waste of a first round draft pick.

Don't mistake me for for a WH basher TG, I think he's done a great job. Especially from the rookie/pre-season drafts.

Swings & Roundabouts.

Brisbane are still walking funny from the Fevola trade, you win some and you lose some.

That said i've definitely not written off McLean, still think he has plenty to offer us.

ED CURNOW'S second chance at the big time was two long years in the making and he's determined to repay Carlton for recognising and rewarding his hard work.

The 21-year-old former Adelaide rookie has been a revelation since the Blues handed him a surprise AFL debut in round one after they plucked him from VFL side Box Hill at last year's NAB AFL Rookie Draft.

"I was just thankful for the opportunity. It's taken a while, but since I've been at Carlton, I've just really enjoyed my footy," Curnow says.
