He's just so cool and calm in a contested situation, which was incredibly vital in those last few minutes last night. He doesn't do much of anything flashy but he just seems so consistent and composed, he's big for us, no doubt

Posted this on the main board, but just as relevant here and it really is very impressive:
Still very early days but one to watch out for from Carlton is Ed Curnow. Good composure and quick hands. Makes smart decisions under pressure.

A quick graphic to illustrate the point:

While I hate the statistic, compared against contested possessions it does give DE% some context. Chosen players are those in the top 25 for disposals and/or contested possessions (excluding ruckmen/KPP).

Curnow is the dark blue in the middle-top of the graph. Suckling is to the far left, Lonergan the red and Josh Kennedy the white as the outliers.

Kennedy's got a very respectable DE considering most of his touches are contested.

Curnow too is a bit of an outlier, the only player with greater than 33% contested possessions (he has 43%) with a DE of above 75% (he has 77.7%).

DE clearly drops as contested possessions increase (forgot to put in a trendline but it ranges from about 78% at 20% contested to 58% at 70%).

Doesn't take into account handball:kick ratio but it does highlight that he's a very good disposer of the footy.

Fantatic post b4f!

Whereabouts is Swan just out of interest?

Swan is 48% (CP) and 69% (DE)

Almost identical to Judd

Edit: However looking closer at the stats, Swan kicks the ball 67% of the time. Judd kicks only 48% which would skew the data in Judd's favour.
Curnow kicks 46% of the time.

P.S. - sensational idea for a graph.

Curnow also positions his body so that it is difficult to get opposition arms at the ball and even if a tackle is applied his hands are free enough not to get pinged for holding the ball.

I do hope he has another good game on the weekend so I can call for 6 in row.

Maybe it was actually a blessing to have lost to the Swans in last years final or otherwise Hawthorn would have swallowed him up in front of us.

Very ambitious thinking :p

Might be the best call for the year so far....

Curnow is a machine!

Can't believe we picked him up for peanuts, has been awesome, is getting better as well. Lots of courage and knows how to get the ball even when he's not under the packs.

Like Freo did with Barlow should we seize the opportunity and sign him up on a longer deal?

Don't want the likes of GWS or GC sniffing around for our diamond out of the rough.

I acknowledge that we don't have a say in list management...Just hypothetical

CARLTON midfielder Ed Curnow can finish the most turbulent week of his AFL career content that talks have begun on a new contract.

The former Adelaide-listed rookie, who spent last season with VFL side Box Hill Hawks, had made a blistering start to the season, averaging 24disposals before his injury.

Taken by the Blues at pick No.18 in the rookie draft, the 21-year-old is expected to be offered a two-year deal.

His manager Lucy Mills said Curnow was loving his time at Visy Park.

"I have had a preliminary conversation with (football manager) Steven Icke, and he's really happy at Carlton," Mills said yesterday.

"Hopefully they are keen to talk, and we can get something done sooner rather than later.

"He is a bit older now and he was just rapt to get his second chance at Carlton."
