Ed Phillips
16 disposals, six marks, four tackles
“Ed certainly played his role well. At a critical stage of the game he marked the ball well and put his body on the line for us and some of his positioning around the stoppage was where we wanted it to be. He’s a very compliant player, Ed. Didn’t get as much of the ball, but Trevor Barker [Beach Oval] quite often is hard to get a lot of footy.”

Ed finished the year very strongly with a best on ground performance in the last game for Sandy . I cant see him having much to worry about as far as staying at the Saints for 2020 is concearned . At worst he is a handy depth player but hopefully he will continue to improve next year and play more senior footy .

Just like his brother Tom, Ed Phillips is a running machine.
The endurance king enjoyed a record debut in 2018 and came close to levelling his stats in his maiden 2019 outing against the Eagles.
Phillips was solid along the wing in his four matches for the year, before a hamstring injury prior to the clash with the Suns prevented him from jumping back into the senior side.
The 21-year-old was consistent for Sandringham throughout the year, utilising his tank along the wing to rack up plenty of footy.
There just seems to be the feeling that Phillips is just beginning to take strides towards something special.
BEST GAME:
Phillips was fantastic against West Coast in Round 8 with 23 disposals and a career-high four clearances.

If additional outside run is what the Saints are after, Ed Phillips firms as the ideal candidate.

The running machine has been named as emergency once this season and is inching towards his first senior appearance in over a year.

Phillips’ strength comes from his outside run and endurance, but the 22-year-old showed he’s more than capable of moving inside after playing a commendable showing against the Blues last week in the slippery conditions.

First game for about a year for Ed, having last played in Shanghai. Ed spent most of his time on the wing and used his well known endurance to get himself into the game.
He did take a while to warm into it and was exposed on the pace of the game at times early.
However he did build into the game nicely and showed he does have the capacity to keep up at the AFL level.
At times his disposal was a little suspect particularly some of the shorter kicks.

Phillips ended the game with 13 disposals (6 kicks and 7 handballs) going at 86%, 7 marks and 2 tackles for 131 metres gained.

Having done nothing majorly wrong, it will be interesting to see if he holds his place. Given the short turn around and it being his first game for a while he might survive. Here's hoping he benefits from the experience and puts in a solid display this week.

A great spoil that saved an almost certain goal for B.King from Phillips.

Also a great tackle photo #21 on below gallery but can't work out how to upload just the photo.

An improved game this weekend after a late reprieve with Ryder being a late omission.
Was one of a small few who played well on the weekend, finding himself in the best as well.
Phillips kicked the first 2 of the match with some nice crumbing and overlapping run.
His defensive work was also pretty good often finding himself in the defensive half with spoils and defensive pressure.
The Geelong wingmen did have a field day however so he may need to pay some more attention to his opponent in future games.

Phillips had 16 disposals going at 100% efficiency. 5 inside 50's, 5 scoring involvements, 2 marks, 2 clearances and 1 tackle.

I expect to see Phillips hold his spot in the team this week to take on Essendon. Hopefully we continue to see improvement over the back half of the year.

Phillips earned a recall for our first game in Alice Springs.
He produced another solid outing looking confident under pressure and showing his normal hard work up and down the wing.
Ed finished the game with 12 disposal (8 kicks and 4 handballs) @ 75% for 234 metres gained. This along side his 4 marks, 4 score involvements, 5 intercepts, and a goal showed a pretty good outing and will certainly be putting pressure on others to keep his spot after the bye.
