Mmmm

Lots of obvious man-love for Eddie being shown on this thread. Unfortunately, I just don't share it given the massive coin involved to get him (wonder whether Sloany is on a $2mill 4 year deal?).

I hope this hype around him turns out better than the hype surrounding Bling before he arrived!
Can't compare the two really. Eddie already has the runs on the board, Tambling was all based on potential and speculative output, almost like the Crows chasing Polec now, or whoever trades for McKernan.

Unless something better comes along, I don't mind them throwing some money at Betts. He's probably a bit overated as a player but he would still provide us with something we desperately need.

Also if it means I won't have to watch Petrenko embarrass himself each week, it's well worth 500 grand a year.

Eddie has runs on the board. Pets has difficulty running.

Also from Carlton's perspective on matching they'd have to look at it like this.

Option 1: Eddie Betts at 500K+
Option 2: Potentially an end of 1st round/2nd round pick compensation pick which for example you could use to get Ricky Henderson/Shaun McKernan (or keep) + free cash to sign a Daisy Thomas/Dustin Martin. Also add in the fact they have a ready made replacement in Troy Menzel sitting there to fill Betts spot

Apparently the deal is 2.1 million over 4 years - obviously front end loaded.

To me, it's a no-brainer. Our history of goal scoring small forwards can be written in capital letters on a pin head, and here we have the opportunity of not having to give up players or draft picks to get one that can kick 40 to 50 goals per year.

Just do it!!

I would do that deal so quickly, hardly misses a game, 40-50 goals, top half a dozen in the league in goal assists, twice as many tackles as Callinan in 2012.

Huge upgrade in an area we need. Is an actual goal kicking forward unlike Petrenko. Tex and Jenkins with Betts around them will be so good.

This is a no brainer for me.
Big hole in the salary cap next year (im presuming we front loaded this year pretty heavily).
Tamblings decent size contract off the books.
Given that Reilly, Thompson and Rutten are probably off the books in the next 2 years I agree we have to front load him heavily in the first 2 years. Also that gives us space to resign Danger, Sloane, Crouch at the end of 2015.

If McKay and Reilly are near $300k then tambling is up for a pay rise. As soon as those 2 vanilla list cloggers are gone the better our footy club will be equipped to be better than mediocre.

Why are people saying 500k is the average wage?

pretty sure its around the 200 mark

Is anybody saying it's an average wage? It's just not an unusually high wage in football these days, especially not for somebody who is within the top 3-5 players in their position in the league. To extract a restricted free agent from their current club, we will need to offer more than that club is prepared to pay.

average wage would be like 300-350, gotta remember for every 10 players in a team on 500-900 there are 38 others

Given the following figures up to 2011, you'd have to think the average player's wage is around the $260,000 mark in 2013 (estimate for 2012 was $250,000)

AVERAGE AFL PLAYER SALARY
2004 - $184,000
2005 - $187,000
2006 - $192,000
2007 - $203,000
2008 - $214,000
2009 - $221,000
2010 - $226,000
2011 - $236,000

I think that shows that 500k is not hugely over the top. I wonder what the average is for top 22 players. We are currently paying a few players to share that role, Betts probably replaces two of them.

Thing is he's on 450k now as one of Carlton's best players.

50k increase is normal

What we are offering isn't more $$'s but more years. 4 years is our carrot

How much in $ terms is no trade required worth? And then what is worth to a team with few trade assets & lots of $$$'s?

A lot more than a lousy $50k or an extra year for a player we don't have the sparr assets to trade for otherwise

Given our draft sanctions this year it is imperative we improve our list through free agency. If Betts cost a few more $$ and we have to offer a 4 year deal, so be it. He fills a big need in our forward half. We have add to our list to improve it and Betts will certainly do that.

Dmac is $400k, I assume Radar would be similar

$300k in today's environment is less than par

We showed DMac the money a few years ago to keep him away from Melbourne, who I think were offering him over 500 a year? I thought that was pretty common knowledge.

Thing is no one cared really, because a) we were more focused on the futures of a few other guys (Tex, Danger, and haha, Tippett) and b) it was looking like DMac was developing into a real gun.
