Who cares whether Betts "deserves" the high salary.

The only three questions that matter are, A) do we need a player like Betts, B) can we afford the high salary, and C) will paying the high salary cost us the opportunity to recruit/retain a quality player in the future.

The answer to A and B are resoundingly, yes. The only issue is whether or not his salary makes retaining the likes of Dangerfield, or attracting a gun back home in the future. Which makes the suggestion to front-load his contract the best one.

If we do get Betts, I have no doubt those posters here questioning his value to our side will be wondering how the hell we ever did without his kind of player by the end of next year.

We have needed a quality small forward for at least the last 10 years, we finally can get one that wants to play here and will cost us nothing except for his salary and people don't want to get him.

What if Betts comes here for that amount of coin, realizes there aint any competition on the list for his spot and sits back and enjoys the money?

We could say that about Dangerfield and his 650k
In realty its like chalk and cheese. Dangerfield has made his intentions clear with the way he plays his football.

However, I remember one Troy Bond. He did earn his keep.

Interesting to note that in the Herald Sun today when talking about Eddie Betts, they didn't mention Adelaide as a possible suitor. Maybe Adelaide have pulled out of the race. According to the footy writers North Melbourne are offering Betts $550k, $100k more then he was on at Carlton. I can only presume Adelaide have gone cold because they don't want to pay him that much.

You put Betts into the forwardline you can play Patty there less. Surely that's a good thing.

You put Betts in front of the ball and some of those contests we all cringe to watch where Pets has to compete in a marking contest and we clap if he puts it out of bounds.. well those contests start to make opposition sides shit their pants and possibly change their defensive structure.

Putting talent like Eddie in front of the footy will drag more defensive pressure from the opposition BACK and allow more of our mid-field to get behind the ball. Both massive wins in us scoring AND in minimising those easy scores over the back we suffered from on occassion this year.

I'm a bit mystified how people can't see that. What is it that makes people believe he won't make that much of a difference?
(NB: this is a different question to whether he is worth the coin or not... I'm just talking about do we need what he can bring to the table - I'm shocked its not a unanimous answer of 'yes')

I would just assume its a Melbourne article and we don't rate a mention over there. That article says the "could" offer more, well obviously and so could a number of teams. If we actually are in the race to get him and offer a similar deal to the Kangaroos and he prefers them it will say a lot about our inability to attract players to this club, wouldn't be a good look.

Look at the last 5 premiership teams. Do you see some skinny forward that plays like a down hill skier and prefers not to use physicality when required??

I'll pay for a vardy type or a chapman...but as i said in the reiwoldt thread, star squibs get you nowhere..

Generally they are pretty good when it comes to players trades because the getting a scoop mentality. Its all quiet though because Carlton are in the finals still but the statement most likely came from a question asked to Betts manager.

Realistically if you got offered a choice between the 2 clubs and one of them was in the same city so you could stay in the same house, send your kids to the same school, your wife can stay in the same job, you would choose that club surely if the money offered by Adelaide wasn't any more substantial. I mean realistically if its true and North offered him $550k we would surely have to be talking $650k to make a difference. Betts is not worth $650k a season. $650k a season is getting into the realms of the superstars of the competition. If your going to pay $650k a season for Betts, lets pay $850k instead and try and lure Dale Thomas then.

Eddies a squib?
News to me. Throws himself willingly into contested marking situations and hits the body as good as any small forward doesn't he?
I agree with Pete you'd probalby need to keep the acid on him to perform - but that's what good coaches do best, get their talented players to perform. (not play their hard working, but lesser talented, players)

but he isn't worth anywhere close to $650k a season.

Did dangerfield walk out on the club today:rolleyes:

Actually based on what I saw this year, Crouch cracks in just as hard as Danger and is extremely clean and skilful and fast, he could easily be our best player in a very short space of time. Apparently was the highest polling player at the AFC in the last 10 games of the season. not bad for a kid in his rookie year.

That stuff is all true, but we should be able to compete with those lesser Melbourne clubs with our facilities, coaches, culture, we should be a club that players want to come to and if we can't get a player from SA who grew up as a Crows supporter we will find it hard ever getting anyone and that's something we would need to change.

oh god.

dangerfield is harder, probabaly the hardest player at the contest in the league, he is much quicker (crouch isnt fast), has a huge kick, is freakish when he goes forward. Good on crouch for highest poller in the last ten games, but dangerfield missed two of those games and was playing with a severely impacted shoulder. Not to mention he played out of the square 50% of the time

Crouch's ceiling will never be as high as dangerfields

It will only say a lot about being able to attract players to sleepy hollow. Melbourne Sydney Gold Coast...what rich 18-30 yr old would choose Adelaide over these places for the same money? It has absolutely nothing to do with the nature of the AFC.
