I don’t think it’s as complicated however as the AFL and many Vics make it out to be.

Not sure why your pointing at the AFL and Victorians as a whole. The AFL have to appease the TV networks stadium deals and balance the books.

It's the non-victorian clubs and small Victorian clubs who do most the whining about the fixture. And a lot of it comes down to where they are playing. As a Collingwood supporter I here all about every little oddity in our fixture every year. Never mind the fact that all clubs would have some little oddities in there fixture. Add on top the whining on our travel and where we play that really aren't that odd at all.

None of that changes with a rolling fixture. And I can guarantee the non-victorian clubs aren't going for anything that doesn't include the local derby double ups every year.

I think they should just have everyone play each other once and that’s it.

Reverse the fixture every year. Keep it simple, stupid, as they say.

A 17-game fixture (which is what you propose here) is what the NFL have and it is fantastic. Limited dead rubbers due to a shorter season, the games tend to mean something etc etc. But they have 330 million people and 32 teams. They can afford to have a shorter season, and still sell the television rights for 4 billion per season.

We have 27 million people and 18 teams. We will always have a longer season unfortunately, because more content equals more money. It sucks, but what can you do?
