Eddie takes fight to the top

Patrick Smith | April 17, 2009 01:50pm

McGuire has asked for a meeting with the AFL football department - it will happen next week - to discuss what he and his club consider is a dangerous disconnect growing between player, club, umpire and supporters, The Australian reports.

One AFL official sensed this would be no ordinary meeting, referring to it as "Collingwood's call for a royal commission." McGuire would see that as wilful AFL hyperbole. He does, however, see this meeting next week which will involve AFL general manager of football, Adrian Anderson, and umpire chief Jeff Gieschen as directly concerning the future of the game which he loves with a passionate energy that could fuel a rocket.

McGuire told The Australian yesterday that the decision to go to the AFL with the club's concerns was not driven by a questionable push-in-the-back here or a debatable high tackle there. More that the match review panel ruling this week to suspend Nick Maxwell for his bump on Geelong's Steve Johnson and Heath Shaw's one-match ban at the tribunal for touching umpire Michael Vozzo only crystallised his feeling that the game was losing its way.

Why does this bloke think Collingwood should get special treatment from the men in white? and/or the MRP?

he doesnt he wants fair treatment

there is a difference, even when we beat your mob by 9 goals we were in the negative in the frees. So far every game nab cup and premiership season we have been in the negative with frees

we want to know why over 7 matches we have received less free in every match

Nah mate, he is talking about the game in general.

Maybe undisciplined acts?, he is also complaining about the Maxwell, Shaw verdicts, and in Shaws case it could have been a lot worse, why does he think theres a consipiracy against Collingwood?

Greetings Viewers

I don't see it much more than Eddie sticking up for his club and as a consequence he's keeping some of the game's adminstrators honest.

We can speculate till the cows come home as to how Patrick Smith got wind of the meeting, but that is his job.

Regards

Dicko

You have missed the point completely. It's not about Collingwood at all. It's about the game. Just like most of us, Eddie is concerned about where it's all headed. Good on him. About time someone stood up to the AFL.

If McGuire's intent is to represent Collingwood, then he has every right to arrange a meeting and to present his agenda.

If McGuire's intent is to represent something other than Collingwood, such as 'the clubs' or 'the wider footballing community', then he has an obligation to seek their input and approval to be their representative.

For mine, he'll say he doing one thing when he'll really be doing another.

Excellent work by Eddie.

He is carrying the flag for all of us who have been whinging about the warped interpretations and the increased umpiring of our game.

To prove he isn't alone and this isn't a Collingwood issue, Jeff Kennett made similar remarks today.

The two leading presidents, of two big clubs, speaking on behalf of 14 other clubs. I don't think you'll find any football department, coach or club in disagreement with Collingwood and Hawthorn on this.

Best of luck to Ed's meeting next week.

At least Eddie has the guts to take it up with the AFL.
The umpiring, all games not just Collingwood games, has been second rate, sometimes pedantic and sometimes even childish for a few years now. This year is heading to be a watershed of "shitness in umpiring" and someone has to raise the question..."where will this shitness stop?"

We have the AFL and the media "celebrating" and "acknowledging this "shitness" as we speak.

Jeff Kennett, although also exposing his vague sort of knowledge of the rules, is willing to throw his hat into the ring and other club Presidents will follow.

It is the job of presidents to raise these questions and coaches, quite rightly should be at arms length.
These are questions about what sort of game we are going to have after the pedants and law-makers have told us what we want from the game.

Round 2, Collingwood starts a tit for tat after Shaw was rubbed out

Prepare for round two: Pies v umpires

Jesse Hogan | April 19, 2009

COLLINGWOOD's already strained relationship with the AFL's umpiring department could worsen, with the club investigating whether an umpire made contact with one of its players during its win over the Brisbane Lions on Friday night.

Magpies coach Mick Malthouse yesterday confirmed the club would scrutinise a passage of play in the third quarter in which the incident allegedly occurred.

If Eddy wants a witchunt on poor performances, maybe he needs to summon Mark Harvey in as well and explain what Freo is doing to help the game...

When you all stop whinging about rules, umpires and how the game is changing, we'll stop carrying the flag for everyone else.

Ingrates.

Good to see at least one other club president has the balls to speak out ... Jeff Kennett.

About time someone kept these w***ers running our game honest. Umpiring needs to be sorted, it is so disgraceful at the moment i hate watching AFL.

I'm backing Eddie against the current umpiring situation and I'm sure a lot of real football fans will back him as well.:thumbsu:

Because he believes Collingwood is bigger than the game itself ..the Pies always get a good run from the umpires and he is trying to ensure that continues.

Your an idiot.
Here is the free kick count. Round by Round this year.
RD Collingwood Free' For Collingwood Free's Against
1 14 18
2 16 23
3 18 15
4 15 19

We have 11 more free kicks paid against us, than for us, in 4 games of AFL!
In the nab cup, we had OVER 30! Free kicks paid against us, than for us.
Do you actually watch football? We have been up against the tribunal 3 times this year, this 2 suspensions. (Heath shaw was a fare suspension).

Your an absolute flog mate.

Eddie is upset, and frustrated with the continual lack of consistency that the umpires, and Jess Geischan have. Him, and many other president's, coaches, supporters, and players, want clarification on what can, and cant be done. Whats in the rules, and what isn't. Just because Eddie has enough clout, and enough guts to stand up for the AFL and it poor standards in umpiring.

I seriously think, you should watch more than 1 Carlton game a week, before you start commenting on what other teams are doing.

Just because you have Chris 'If you touch me I get a free kick' Judd in your team, and you get awarded the better end of the stick each weak, doesnt mean that the umpires are doing a good job, and that all is well in the AFL.

CarLOLton have 18 free kicks more for them, than against. This is a team that has been chasing tail the last 2 weeks.

Umpires is a joke, as are you.

OmFG conSPiracy!!!!!11

Port's been up to the tribunal five times. OmFG conSPiracy?!!:!!;1?

Love this common perception that free kicks must be even - or in extreme circumstances, definitely in your team's favour. A 30-10 free kick illustrates more of a team's ill-discipline rather than cheating.
