Did some research (yes I know that's sad) Tate has kicked more than 2 goals on only 2 occasions - Against KP on the weekend (6) and against Abers a few weeks ago (6). Unless kicking 2 has now been upgraded to a 'bag' of goals the only 'bags' he's kicked have been against the 2 bottom sides......

After 15 rounds Strathmore has 19 points more points against than GV. Don't think the defence is too bad seeing "half the backline is missing".

super budgets i was reading this article in the ballarat league
does it have merit - is it time for the edfl to consider something
akin to this to try and even the competition , after all both the
afl & vfl operate on the philosiphy of a even competition

any one have any thoughts or comments on applying somthing like the below to the EDFL ........

To borrow a system implemented by the Central Murray Football League, it is possible to implement a strategy to even up the competition.
The league could make each club fill their side with a points tally totalling 40.
Using this simple points ranking system, clubs must not exceed the cap, or they will lose their four points and be fined $500.
This is how each player could be ranked:




This system is simply designed to promote the blooding of locally produced players and forcing clubs to focus time and money into their junior programs.
This will hopefully result in more of our locally produced youngsters playing in the TAC Cup and getting drafted to the AFL.
Obviously it still allows club’s to spend as much money as they like, but it doesn’t make it easy or viable for sides to “poach” players from neighbouring clubs in the competition.
There are some other points that need to be raised from this system though.

• Playing coaches are rated on the league from which they are recruited.

• An RDFL player wishing to return to a new RDFL club from another league is a 5 point player, less one point for each season spent in the other league after leaving the RDFL.

• Clubs will initially rate their players and forward these to the league where each player’s rating will be verified before being circulated to all clubs.

• Players returning to their original RDFL club after at least one season away return at their rating prior to departure.

• There is no points cap in the Under 18s and reserves competition.

Great idea, but what is stopping clubs offering say the best under 16's in the comp money to transfer over to their club so they can play U18s?
Is that happening in the league that this has been implemented?

I think its a great idea, I'm sure one of the Mornington competitions use a similar points system.
I would like to hear more feedback from clubs who use this system.
A system like this would take pressure of committees in regards to finding money and trying to compete with the wealthier clubs. It would also make recruiting very interesting.

I don't think you should have to spend 3 points on someone from another league. What if they move to the local area? If they are in between players 15-22, why would you put them in? It crucifies guys who aren't stars.

It's a decent concept, but there are a lot of flaws in it.

I like this concept but it is really something that football victoria needs to introduce across all leagues to make it work. Otherwise players will just hunt cash in other leagues and the edfl standard will drop.

I think his goal kicking statistic is on par with how many times he's been "KO'd" this season....

Great idea, but what is stopping clubs offering say the best under 16's in the comp money to transfer over to their club so they can play U18s?
Is that happening in the league that this has been implemented?

The points system with 1 point for junior and under 18 players playing for their own club will favour clubs with large junior bases. The larger junior bases that some clubs have are a product of ground location (proximatey to local schools, new house growth areas, etc) whilst some clubs in older areas and with very close neighbouring clubs struggle for numbers. The league should limit junior teams more to stop larger clubs from having 16 junior teams and smaller clubs having 4 or 5. The clubs should be forced to limit junior team registrations to a maximum 11 junior teams. This can be done by limiting say 72 registered under 10's, (3 under 10 teams @ 24 players per team), the same for under 12 and 14 and a limit of 48 under 16 players (2 under 16 teams @ 24 players per team) It is hard to convince a 15 year old to change clubs but when kids are starting at 8 years of age, they will try to play at there preferred club if they fit in the clubs registration limit and if they don't they will go to the next local club. Similar to some schools having limits to enrolments. If a student can't get into a school, they go to the next one.
.......Alternatively, if this is not implemented, EDFL players irrespective of original junior club should carry 1 point playing for any EDFL club. THE LEAGUE MUST LOOK AT THE COMPLETE CLUB STRUCTURE.
If it is good enough for the AFL to have a socialist approach to football with the priority picks, draft, salary cap etc. to protect some clubs, why arn't the EDFL doing the same? That is, provide rules to even out the comp from the ground up and not just look at seniors

I dont think this is really neccesary in our competition which has been super competetive over the past decade with Greenvale, Strathmore, Doutta, Keilor all winning flags as well as most teams playing finals.

With Marby presumably coming up and with big cash to spend it will make it very competetive with Strathmore, Greenvale, Keilor, Marby, Doutta (possibly sunbury) all with big budgets and the craigieburns, avondale, WC, Abers etc a little further back when it comes to budget but this is inevitable.... Clubs have realised that this is the way footy is heading and to deal with it the best way possible, and know that its how you spend the money that is important.

If we bring in the point system and make it harder for really good players to play for our clubs then players like Holman, Quinn etc etc will just go play Eastern league instead of making our comp one of the best going around.

its not trying to convince the kids to play at the next local club. its the parents you have to convince. there aren't going to be many parents who will want to go to the next club.
for example if i lived in Craigieburn. the next club is a 15 minute drive to Greenvale or Epping which is in a completely different league. there is no possible way that theory would work.

A club should not be penalised if they have the people willing support many junior sides.
A sign of a good club is their juniors so if a club is on the front foot i.e. auskick and so on good on them.

Why should a kid miss out on playing footy with his mates because he is the 73rd kid on the list. You may lose that kid from the sport all together.

if you take prejudices out of the equation and
of course there is some tinkering to be done with the
formula for points
think abt the example of what situations it maye create
if my information is correct what if the cap was in force from 2007
ie - Carrick - was due to sign at d/stars mid year until strathmore came along and
trumped D/S with a larger offer - under the cap this may not have happened
and D/S may be stronger for it not strathmore
what I am trying to say is any club that wants to recruit will still need to pay these players market price , you may or may not loose players to other leagues ,obviously if these guys are playing for smore or greenvale - they want to play in the league or / and these two clubs have a connection to these guys or are offering more than any other club in any league - maybe a combination of all
but by restricting the numbers the big budget clubs can recruit and opening these players to other the clubs it may actually create
a stronger more even comp - its easy and shortsighted to say the smaller clubs have to try harder to raise
funds to recruit , to strengthen the league etc etc -
The reality is we want a strong healthy competition with games that are entertaining ,
I dont think its as simple as just raise more money with maybe 4 agrade clubs
that have their backs to the wall each yr ,to cover costs as it is.
Would the clubs be better being under less pressure to pay guys for a yr or two
to be competitive which may only assist in finishing a honest 7th or 8th each year
and being able to put more resources into junior footy

I believe your quote is even more a reason why we should have a points system. With richer clubs such as Sunbury and Marby possibly in A Grade then there will be even more of a gulf between cashed up clubs and the rest.

Also can someone point out why it is so important that we must be the best comp going around. By losing a couple of players because you cant fit them into a points salary cap is not going to hurt our comp.
This system would help clubs look after thier own home grown players, rather than the mercanarys out there looking for the biggest buck.

Different premiers does not mean even or close competition.
The EDFL may have had many different A grade premiers over the years, however the gap between the top and the rest has always been there.
How many years have we had a fight for fourth going into the last few rounds?
How often are the top two guaranteed well before half way?
The competition needs some life and unpredictabillity about it.

Fair summary of the Greenbacks match against Douttas in your previous post.That big fella in the goal square must learn to chase,tackle and do the team things when they lose the footy in their forward line or Cashmore will expose them at the main dance in September.

Have a good time in Darwin and if there is a big fella and some quality players up there,sign them.
Shoes will slay them on the dance floor.Take the mustard jacket from Drebster days,it will make all the difference from the riff raff accompanying you.

Have on good authority - EDFL have a points system under review and could be implemented by 2009. Also heard the A grade comp could be expanded to 12 teams with the bottom two being relegated each year.
Makes room for Sunbury to be included into B grade in 2009 plus another club or for a club to fold/merge?? Keeps competition at 12 or 14.

The under 18/s game Keilor park vs oak park was called off due to the dangerous condition of the Kp ground.So l asssume the 1sts and 2nds didn't play as well. Anyone know if those games were played?
