EDFL Premier Discussion 2025

How could you understand? It hasn’t been explained. A club has been stripped of a premiership and the league has made no attempt to explain why.

A premiership isn’t being stripped because of a “timing” or “clerical” error that gave them no advantage.

Spin, spin, bullshit, spin.

If you’re looking for a statement / deterrent for other clubs, then you can’t punish the coach. MM is a big name and people want to cut him down but it’s generally not the role of coaches to do playing contracts.

Coaches don’t have responsibility and it’s not up to them to be learning details of every player contract.
Micks finger prints are all over this

I hope this isn’t keeping you up at night JP 🤪
Ha yep to be honest I have no investment in the edfl, but this decision makes you wonder where grassroots footy will be in 5 years time, people in charge don't seem to care and just give lip service and provide some clubs with decisions that will ruin them and others just enough to keep the masses happy enough but hey let's hope you win this year Keilor, no one will remember in September when you win again

Yes exactly. Had a great opportunity to put the foot down and make a statement they won’t stand for it and other clubs would have taken notice. But being Keilor they did what we expected and that was basically nothing. Absolute joke.

I believe a loss of say 16 match points (minus 4 games) and a points reduction of say 8 would have been a start plus senior coach gets suspended for 4 games. Now that would have created some noise and made a statement.
Keilor could still make finals and be fine with reduced points plus it would have made statement to senior coaches in footy..
And therein lies the big problem along with the lack of transparency & poor statements from (EDFL & Keilor)

I think most are comfortable with the historic penalty, found guilty and had the premiership taken from them and fined $50k

The issue i believe most have is what is the future consequence of the guilty finding.

The 15% salary reduction is not satisfactory, is not a severe penalty and does not have an impact on Keilor for 2025 or beyond.

They 100% should be starting the season well behind all other clubs & realistically not be a genuine chance of winning the 2025 / 2026 Premierships.

Yes Keilor do have players coming in for 2025, not all senior men however all Feb 2025 incoming clearances

Everyone must of taken a pay cut in 2024 and Josh Honey for one straight out of AFL would of been playing for free. Explains how they were under in 2024

Audited end of ‘22 all clear.
Audited end of ‘23 all clear.
Audited end of ‘24 and penalised for breaches in ‘22 and ‘23.
How were they stupid enough to have any of this on the books and how could they have been under 2024.
Got away with it then got caught 12 months later.

Keilor still saying we did nothing wrong it was just a admin error if that's the case why did they take the flag of you and also how come they didn't take the flag of keilor for the breach in 2022 even it's a dollar over still bloody cheating

Who won the flag in 2022? Not Keilor

Of course Keilor were over and the punishment is light. It does seem the league has missed a chance to make a statement.

However the irony of club supporters from Pascoe Vale and Deer Park leading the charge on “harsher penalties” is some next level irony.

I mean few clubs have rorted the salary cap system since it came in like them. As a supporter of a ‘less financially fortunate club’ the rest of us feel you should actually be happy and relieved. It essentially green light’s what you have and are continuing to do.

Ps In the interest of your time and ours please save us the “we play rules” blah blah blah.

The real sad part of this is nothing is going to change. Keilor will win the flag this year and other clubs that have no chance to match their junior program and therefore sustainably compete, now still have no deterrent to course correct and play by the agreed upon rules.

Maybe so but that’s certainly not the case at all clubs

The committee is responsible

If they’re stupid enough to let the coach run his own race with the finances then it’s still on them

I don’t think it sends any message suspending a coach - just means all other coaches will suddenly feel they have to be across all contracts and salary caps - they generally have enough to do

I note on the list of Premiers on the EDFL website, it is still showing Keilor as the 2023 Premiers, albeit with an asterisk beside their name, but no explanation as to why.

I would have thought under the circumstances that their name should have been expunged entirely as the 2023 Premiers. Alternatively the notation should be made beside their name, that “No Premiership awarded due to salary cap breaches”. A mere asterisk is meaningless.

Genuine question :So if Keilor believed the 45K over was part of the 2024 Cap, does that mean 2024's books read as only 65K in player payments to balance it out?...I don't understand that line of thought
I’m with you on this one. 45k sign on leaves 65 k for player payments. Ok 65 k + 18 games = $3611 per game + 22 players = $164 per player. Year right keilor players weren’t over the salary cap in 2024 nothing to see here

Been sitting out quietly. Unfounded speculation down at frog hollow suggest that players were both paid to play finals and received a winners bonus (ie. their 2023 H&A numbers were within the cap) which they did not do in 2024 b/c they realised these payments (although allowable) are IN the cap. Seems strange, but some part of it may have legs. It is further noted that player points for the GF was 39 and that would drop to 35 in 2025. So if the same team plays in Rd 1 or the GF we could comfortably do so even with a 10 point reduction in our points cap.

They didn’t know bonuses didn’t count in the cap?

Come on Keilor… seriously?

Please refrain from attempting to tarnish the Lions. Just a club trying it's best to be part of premier division. It appears we are once again, up against the odds competing with the big boys this season. We will do our best.

I respect your views & get where you're coming from but IMO, the EDFL has treated KFC like they're too big to fail & your viewpoint does similar to McGuane.

When the coach spends a decent amount of time attempting to poach players knowing that they were taking the piss with the cap, accountability is warranted.

He routinely poaches junior players with an understanding that it'll benefit their careers, when really, all it's doing is adding their excessive fees to the slush fund available for their senior players.
Mindful that this is occuring with working class families during a cost of living crisis.. it's pretty crook.

Must be something new that players get paid to play in finals and then think that is not included in the salary cap.

Have I read this story correctly?

In a nutshell it seems the evidence has been freely handed over, and judge/jury have assessed and deliberated on what may actually have been a simple $45k typo or clerical mistake by a volunteer.
As a result an approximate $50 deduction per player per week is deemed noble, and the retention of player points and no ladder restraints the fair and logical outcome handed down by the folk who oversaw the process.

With practice games occurring, and Kayo once again buffering what will be the next big talking point in a week's time?
$50 per player per week is 1.100 a week for the team.
Need to have a Forty week season to make up the amount there.
You must have gone to the school as the Keilor numbers me .
