The thing that irks me in the article is Keilor pulling the "mental health card" of volunteers due to being busted. I acknowledge the stress these individuals are going through and sincerely hope they are ok and get through it. The question I will ask is - Where is Keilor FC empathy and consideration of all the other clubs(Hillside/T.Lakes ect.) volunteers they've pillaged juniors over the years? Where have they shown consideration for the mental effect to these poor volunteers doing all the hard work only for KFC to come in and offer "better opportunities"?
Keilor - If you want to sit at the top of the tree and tell everyone you are there because you do things better, then be exposed for cheating, you can't pull the mental health card out because of the pile on.... Can you imagine D Park being caught and pulling that?
while I think we have sympathy for mental health these days to go there on this one feels a touch shallow.

hard to disagree with anything written above and sometimes people impact there own mental health with their actions.
being an adult is to then own those actions and not deflect but to own it and work through it with professional mental health support.
that for me is when it is a mental health problem.

That photo will win them no friends. Too much like the Melbourne Storm's attitude.
Wonder how many other metro/country clubs would have been given a double page spread in the biggest newspaper to basically say “we didn’t do anything wrong”.

Certainly helps to gain that sort of access and exposure when your coach is also employed by the Herald Sun.

I have not read this article but i can review the 2023 playing group and games played.
69 games were played between 5 VFL listed players, Only Cassar played juniors at Keilor the rest were recruited as VFL listed players (ie they didnt get on a list from playing at Keilor!)

More smoke and mirrors sadly from Keilor on this topic

Absolute BS i am afraid, repeating i have not read the story so if other information is in the story please share

Season 2023Games
Nathan Colenso (Quuensland Junior)
8
Jack Brown (RDFL Junior)
10
Darcy Cassar (Keilor Junior)
15
Jonathan Marsh (Sydney Junior)
18
Harry Kennedy (Aberfeldie Junior)
18
69

The relevant part of the article is very much that our VFL players, after playing very few games for us in prior years, suddenly played a lot of games which pushed us over the cap.

Like they had no control of when those guys played or how much they paid them.

That’s an absolute horseshit argument. You have to manage the cap.

Here’s what makes it worse (based on your table above):

- They recruited Marsh in 2023! He played for Old Carey in 2022, where he played 12 games (and 4 at Coburg)

- Same thing with Kennedy! He played at St Bernard’s in 2022, where he played 7 games (and 11 at Bullants).

These two weren’t Keilor players “coming back from VFL”. They went and bloody recruited them in the year in question, then claim surprise when they play for them.

“Previous years we got 5 and 7 games from VFL players. The year in question we got 60.”

Well yeah… YOU WENT AND RECRUITED MORE.

“We received no advantage”… what? 60 games for the year from state league footballers in a local comp is no advantage??

If this is the “explanation” its a complete farce. Surely this cannot be allowed to go unchallenged.

Not that any other club will raise it, as they’re probably doing the same thing.

Unbelievable they would try this bullshit on.

The other thing I would bet… they passed the audit in 2023 because they simply excluded any games played by VFL listed players.

Then an auditor who actually may just have half a brain came along in 2024 and found there were a bunch of games missing.

They blew the cap by $45k which, for the 60 games played by VFL players, is an average of $750. Lines up somewhat.

Farcical audit in 2023 if so.

we’ve done it before but we’re right now.
I feel for mick he would have no idea about that side of it.
Id say he was meaning his own mental health in the article which is sad.
agree the guys responsible in the blue were ok until caught so it cant be them

certainly the hot topic after today’s article

There's been crickets so far from the other clubs...... pretty telling.

Micks built up a ton of respect from both friend and foe over the years, begrudging or not you cant deny the work and results he has achieved for that footy club and during his own career.

Watching him erode it, with nonsense articles like this playing the victim and shouldering no blame, is both sad and embarrassing. The pies fan in me weeps.

To me the crazy thing is the player points that are allocated at clubs like Keilor that have so many junior teams… Last year they had 46 points….

That’s super generous…. To get the comp on a more even keel I would include the number of junior teams each club has in the formula for points…

Put a club like that back to 28-30 points and they can play their kids and spread the talent better throughout the competition.

Tough topic Mental Health, and one I personally navigate regularly due to lived experience and current workplace issues, as well as previous football club experiences so it always triggers me this stuff as it can certainly take you back to dark periods.

Spoke with a former NAB League colleague today on the topic after they read HS story.
They asked do I regret being so open about my struggles when it was never embraced and/or supported.
Quick answer "No" as it says more about those who hold and use info to at times aid and benefit themselves, than those brave enough to be open and vulnerable.

So I hope for Mick and those referred to today they too when the dust settles have no regrets for publicly being vulnerable about this stuff.

I get what Beard is saying, and yes we can contribute to our own head and mindset sometimes unintentionally.

The most critical layer now is how does Keilor wrap it's arms around those volunteers professionally?

I actually get angry when "Mental Health" is used and perceived as an excuse or throw away line, so benefit of the doubt for me in that yeh a few people will be feeling it ... but real mental impact is ongoing and a constant battle of ups/downs, self regulation, sometimes medication and a bloody lot of hard work and practice.

She's no quick fix, and somethingt that miraculously disappears once the HS article becomes fish 'n chip paper no longer present so wherever this current $hitstorm and life take those people from Keilor FC ... I just hope for them, their nearest and dearest that it's a safe place.

I would like to know who from Keilor Senior Management has the courage to front the club members, staff, family, players & the community and take accountability? Where is the head coach now? How is the footy god going to justify the sanctions on his media commitments now? Finally/ will the players who took the extra dollars now declare the additional income to the ATO?
That's funny. Even community coaches who earn much more than the players don't declare to ATO

Will KFC be writing to all Junior parents?
Please note all your hard earned money that you will be paying us for your child's registration will go toward paying our fine to the EDFL, if any is left over we will use this to fund our senior program above and beyond the salary cap (as we have always done), sorry but we cant afford new balls and equipment for your child's team this season.

same way you juggle points
Not involved these days but my club kept a running sheet from round 1. We were then able to decide if VFL players could play . Most played just three matches to qualify for finals ( if needed or justified ). Maybe do away with the salary cap and reduce the points system . Several years ago a high profile community coach approached our club asking for $100k to coach and manage the whole club .We are a well regarded club but unable to afford/justify that sort of money .

Big hitting HS Interview
The three key leaders of the Keilor club on Thursday also revealed:

Should we pass the hat around and shout a tank of fuel to the white van drivers who may have to go for premium unleaded this year rather than the 91 octane. Exit speed may be critical at away matches.

By the way the club “ increased “ the junior fees for 2024

500 kids x 460 is a lot of revenue of a club spending 100k on its biggest expense player payments

Should have a very profitable 25 and surprised only 45k over on 23 and more surprises 620 dollars over in 22 with such a larger revenue stream without other revenue

If you are as reputable as you say at KDC

#do the sums AND advise where is the money

In a month this will be yesterday’s news, honestly welcome to the world of footy and politics, if you think the punishment isn’t enough that’s how it roles!

As long as he want! Coach doesn’t do the contracts let’s not forget this a good man who has a talent for developing good footballers we are lucky to have a coach of this quality giving back to grass roots football, the systems looses if we loose mick
