Why not do what the NRL do in their world club challenge between the Australian and English premiers. Only difference is that is a one off game. You would need to do a mini comp to determine the champion of champions. Not sure clubs or players would be too keen on that at the start of the next season, plus you would have players moving on so it may not be the same team that won the flag.

They used to have a lightning premiership a couple of years ago but i think it only lasted a few years.

Given that money is the root of all evil, put a decent purse up for grabs and watch the clubs support it.

Not sure about other leagues but looking at the EDFLs disclosed financials, they're not really struggling for a quid

What about a big carrot for the real stuff instead of some Mickey Mouse comp in the pre or post season?

Post season you would doubt could work - what player would want to play footy in October/November when you have footy trips, Spring Carnival, festivals, summer around the corner and not to mention pre season firing up again.

Reward the premier of each division. This helps give a leg up for Division 1 and 2 premiers.

The old Keilor night comp was great but more a money spinner for Keilor wasn't it?

There was a preseason comp about 20 years ago called the Premiers Cup. Both GF teams from all metro comps plus the VFA played in a knock-out competition over a couple of weekends with the winner pocketing $50k - which was a lot of money back then. I think it only lasted a year but was a great idea and the money on offer ensured all teams played to win. If I recall correctly, it substituted preseason games with 4 x 20min qtrs. with no time on.
Great idea I thought. Put up big money, and all teams will go hammer and tong to win - although footy was more localised back.

Abers have a strong young list of Reserves and first year into the seniors from the 18's. I think they will hold and be very competitive.

Capisano will hurt Greenvale cause they don't have a back up of a big back man with also the retirement of Matt Smith and Shinners has also left the club. Pressure will be on the Jets.
Bathie is a big loss for Keillor.

Agree a few big losses for Greenvale and haven't heard of replacements in these key positions. Campisano was a bloody good strong, dedicated & reliable full back so hard to replace. Smith & Shiners 2 of the best talls going around. As I mentioned during the year Smith is a gun. Why is he retiring btw, as was still moving well last season.,

Although Bathie was one of the best in our league when he was up & going ( another of my favourite players in this comp) I'm sure Keilor will find a replacement from within..

Any other news around the traps!!
From what I know it will be another great year with improvements expected from a few teams. Hearing good things out of Pacco (Hardingham having a huge impact down at Panther land) and also Marby Park (with Castello young list sure to improve again). Strathmore already talking finals and I expecting them to be hovering around the top 2 for the majority of the season.. Keilor will no doubt be up there again with the best coach in the business, however I think Abers will battle to play finals however they won't be far off the mark.

It would be great if this forum could post practice matches that are known and scheduled, it's always an exciting time during practice matches in readiness for the 2017 season. I did hear that Greenvale maybe playing a game in Geelong? Pacco at Kyabram....Dates not clear

Interesting article in today's leader about Craigieburn having less than 30 contracted senior players for this season so far! “Some blokes don’t want to play Premier Division, or even twos in Premier Division,” Eagles coach Peter Bugden said.
“We are in need of any local people to come down and play football, no matter what your capabilities and age are,”

Pretty sad to see but guess it serves as an example to other clubs the dangers of buying flags in lower grades
