Agree. The better systems will encourage junior coaches that have assisted prior to be given the main role of a junior team. The Team Manager role is just as important. To be fair, the AFL are strong in providing a lot of resources, free ones, in education and development of coaches

Agree 100%. How many do I see yelling at umpires? Too many! I was at a meeting earlier in the year when I learnt that a couple of clubs (I think MV was one) had a policy that they would not engage in any way with an umpire even things like 'ball'. Perhaps someone could clarify but its an interesting initiative

A bug bear of mine. Kids sniping, dropping knees, sling tackling and not being pulled up for it by their own coach. To my mind if you ignore it you perpetuate a poor culture

Well said Star....So many idiots out there who want to win premierships at the low junior levels and will try anything. Probably want to buy caps that say under 11 div7 premiers or whatever.. It's about teaching them skills, mateship, sportsman like behaviour. Where do you cross over, well maybe 13s div 1 & 2 probably.. What's your views on when you switch to serious footy and aim for premiership glory??

From an SFC viewpoint, they run a rotation policy on all teams from U15 down which can be to the detriment of winning games but ensures all players are developed forward, back and mid. The policy also ensures all players have a minimum of 75% game time irrespective of ability. I guess 15As is pretty serious though! There is no doubt the U17As players take winning extremely seriously though wiser heads among the coaches and committee always push the development angle.

Don't get me wrong, they all want to win flags, from the moment they start scoring, but I think it is important to develop a skill set and a culture which ultimately leads to team success anyway.

Well said and just to add to it.

Those actually in the know at our club (I'm sure Strathmore are the same) are confident our programs are well structured, organised, fair and professional. If you actually knew those involved who've started our program, played a role over the years or currently uphold a role managing it then you would know our club as a whole have the best interests at heart of the families involved at our club, we want all clubs in the EDFL to be successful and ultimately play our role in the local community.

If you think otherwise you're either negative about everything, a serial whinger, a "poor me" type character or just plain lazy who expects everything gifted to you on a silver platter without working for it.

On Star's last point (this is not an umpire bashing comment at all) I am of the belief that the junior umps would be better served paying more free kicks than not enough. That along with the support of proper coaching would stamp out the sling tackling and sniping that I witnessed on dozens of occasions again this year without any action. If unsure in these instances - pay a free kick - don't allow play to unfold.

If you aren't blowing the whistle you are in a sense endorsing the behaviour. Same for the coach - if you aren't addressing that with the player one on one, the family and then the team as a collective you are endorsing the behaviour.

Same at our end - the rotation policy is a terrific tool for development and inclusiveness in team sport.

I agree with Puff that it is hard work. How did Abers become strong in the first place? Their junior program was built up over time. Abers are also like SFC they will only take players onboard if there are spots to fill. Players who have been in the program get first preference. And most of Abers/SFC juniors have a side in the first division, so do you blame kids for wanting to go across?

Clubs need to take responsibility and setup programs with the right people involved. That goes from the committee down to the coaches. Without that you cannot move forward with your juniors. For example what kind of modern coach will have great communication skills and access to kids? PE teachers. Brett Gourley springs to mind and was able to win 5 in a row at 18s level.

Well said mate - Brett has been outstanding for our footy club. A super bloke and terrific coach.

Having coached some of the kids he's coached over these past few seasons has been an absolute pleasure. Not only well developed young talent but cracking fellas too.

On the other hand we'd also like to think as a footy club we provided Brett a program and well developed young talent where he evolved as a coach, had great success and now holds a lead role at the Cannons as a result.

Couldn't agree more in the club developing as well. He has deserved his chance to go to higher levels. This was just an example of development and the modern coach.

Exactly what happened at Abers this year.
They wanted a 2nd U15 girls team and league would not allow it.
About 12 girls were told that there was not a spot for them. Only 2 went and played elsewhere.

If we don't want a cap on the number of juniors a club can register....then don't bring in a point system and senior level. Clubs without juniors right now will be gone in 3-5 years if the points cap remains where it is or is lowered.

I agree players and their parents should be able to choose the best environment for their kids to excel. I believe the EDFL should be driving junior programs within the clubs struggling for juniors, learning from the stronger clubs and transferring that knowledge where it is needed.

We should be strengthening juniors at all levels at all clubs and providing the kids opportunity to play at the highest level possible not just adding more teams at stronger clubs who will have to play in lower divisions anyway.

Fair and reasonable post.. Like your thinking..

Apparently the 21 year old murdered in Roxburgh Park earlier in the week was the same person who kicked the EDS under 18 player in the head and got banned for life back in 2014.

Injuries and lack of interest for the last spot in the top 4.....The fight wasn't there

Mate at EDS received a SMS advising a big announcement at the club tonight. Assume coach decision for 2018? Not sure what else would constitute a big announcement seeing they have sorted out salary cap issues.

I'm told Dean Wallis has been reappointed.

Has he decided to stay to clean up his mess at EDS?? Was a bit of talk he wasn't aware of the issues but maybe he might have been..Preformances of late would suggest they "might" need a change and start fresh..
I like many would only be guessing. I would say from the performances of late, it is the players that have lost passion and some need to be moved on.
