Very good point you raised with 1st teams playing 2nd & 3rds team.
However I did hear of a game in where a younger smaller kid filled in at a higher age group and the other side took it easy on him with tackling. It was Abers so well done to these kids. Great to hear a positive story coming out of junior footy..

Admirable yes, but teams should not be changing the way they play because a boy is smaller or younger. I remember years ago in an U18 'thirds' game and the opposition had a 14yo. The boys also took it easy in him but I think there is a duty of care which should not belong to the opponent.

That said, we all know Abers have one of the best Junior programmes around

In regards the grading games with Clubs 1sts team playing against clubs 2nd team, yes in some instances this is an issue, but definitely not with the likes of Abers, Keilor, Hillside ect.. where their 2nd side is 90% made up of 2nd year players....

Disagree with your 90% call. These clubs - and throw in Strathmore - would have less than 90% 2nd year players in their A's nevermind their twos. Strathmore would be roughly 2/3 top age and 1/3 bottom age in the A's and maybe 50:50 in the Bs. All of Abers, Keilor and Hillside also have more than 10% bottom age in the A's - which I applaud. It is great for a capable young player's development

Fastandloose, what was the poor act behind play, I went and had a look at the game also and must have missed it?
It was a pretty torrid affair all day, both sides were hard at it, Abers just had no one that could go with Taylor early as he really set them up. the red headed boy Hearne was good for Keilor after half time
Abers seem to play a loose in the Keilor forward half and it just didnt work for them, Keilor were well drilled and denied Abers any easy possesion, they just werent allowed to get their running game going
Both sides have got some nice players, the game could have gone either way, keilor maybe just a bit more polish in the end?
If Bytel plays he may have been the difference?
No 41 for Abers smashed a Keilor player in the back, off the ball just before end of 2nd qtr. If Abers tighten up fwd delivery and Walsh is back in, Abers would win that game by a couple of goals. Bytel would make a difference to any u16 team but must think he's too good to play u16.

If true then the coach should drag him for the entire second half. This type of behaviour should not be tolerated and often the cause of bigger all in brawls in juniod grades.

Yeah I agree but also use some common sense, as in the lower division they might need a few players to help out. It's better than playing with say 15-16 as then the other team can only play 16-17. This is a worse situation or asking some players to play with the opposition side..But we are on the same page..

I just heard news that Jaksyn Grant Hillside ruckman has suffered a serious long term ankle injury which may see him out for the season?
Bad luck for the boy if it's true as he was in the Vic Metro squad and obviously a huge loss for Hillside
Very difficult to cover a loss like that

It's definitely true and player came back on in 3rd qtr. We'll see if he plays again this week.

Broken fibula, disappointing for him. Hopefully he recovers well and is back for jets next year.

Always need to be careful when numbers of players start to get quoted on these forums as the number named was not involved in the incident cited
Yes your bang on. I got it wrong and apologize. I've changed the original post to the correct number after checking. Thanks for letting me know.

Surely Moonee Valley must go to Div 1 and Westy head back to Div 2
Surely the EDFL is run by muppets. They have put Douttas back up after there great performance against EK, and dropped Westmeadows 1 week after they should have.
Moonee valley or Avondale should go up.

Surprising.

Considering that Div2 is fairly competitive, MV & AH would not do any better than WC. Just to put the WC result into perspective, Keilor were without their best and most influential player, yet margin was still >100pts. I would have thought a 6 team Div1 would have been the best outcome.

Surely this is a clear example of Moonee Valley chasing a flag and doing what they can to stay in a lower division instead of giving their players an opportunity to play in the best possible competition, therefore challenging themselves to be the best they can be. I would've thought the EDFL is there to protect clubs from themselves in instances like this, where MV are clearly not capable of seeing the Big Picture.
If Doutta's going back up then all the best, that's respect :thumbsu:. MV , whether you win every game or not there is NO RESPECT :drunk:!

After all the regrading discussion this weeks round looks like it will be competitive across 3 of 4 games. Only real blow out may come from Keilor v the ex-EDS Allstars

My tips:

Keilor by plenty
Strathmore in a closer game than many may think
Greenvale to get over WC
Hillside may get Abers on their home deck even with grant out they still may have too many for Abers to counter

Looks like the top half of the draw is going to be competitive!
Did any of you guys see the Abers v Hillside match, I had to work so unfortunately missed it, was that result a bit of a surprise? Did the wet conditions suit Abers better or are Hillside a bit overrated?
Strathmore looks to be the big improver?

Hillside being hit by injuries & having 3 teams is hurting the top team. Numbers getting spread to field these teams.

Was a cracking game of hard footy. woukd be a number of sore boys this morning.

Abers also field 3 sides as do Keilor and Strathmore I believe so that point probably a bit moot.

First time in this age group that the side fielded by hillside was probably shorter across the ground than Abers - the hillside ruck man out would have hurt however Abers also missed Fletcher so even in that regard.

Thought Abers endeavour just that bit better in conditions that should have suited the bigger bodied hillside.

Abers more even across the park

Disagree, Abers wanted 4 teams and were denied. Therefore have extra numbers and are rostering kids off due extra numbers.

Hillside bench numbers in 1st team will vary depending on allowing the other 2 teams 18 players.

Not much between all 4 sides.

So how does rostering not disadvantage them?

I'm guessing they don't roster there better players off.

On another subject that was raised I looked through a few results from the lower grades (below 16s) and you can clearly tell some clubs tank to play in a lower division. I'm not sure how you do this other than play kids for less than the minimum 3 qrts and then make it up to these kids after the grading has been completed. You really wonder about some clubs...

So how does rostering not disadvantage them?
They have 6 bench players each week, Hillside may have 2. By my thinking that's a significant advantage.

I would also think that makes them fresher come finals time.

But Hillside have created this problem, should've gone 2 teams only.

Depending on who they roster off, yes could be disadvantage.
