Just thought I would bump this thread once again. Think any player, let alone someone who is 25, beating a big 3 player in a final* is a huge achievement. First time since 2016 that it has happened, when Stan Wawrinka beat Novak at the US Open. Andy Murray did it at Wimbledon in the same year. They(Stan and Andy) have done it 6 times in total in fact.

The only other player who has done it is Juan Martin Del Porto way back in 2009. And now, we have Danill Medvedev.

One other thing. This is the first time since 2004 that a single Slam has not been held by a member of the big 3 for 2 straight years. Theim won the US last year. That hasn't happened since the French Open 2003/4.

* Cilic defeated Kei in the final of US Open 2014. He did defeat Federer in the semis.
Likewise, Safin defeated Federer in the semi of his Australian Open win in 2005. It was Hewitt in the final.

I like going back to this thread, the 90s is looking like it'll be the decade that tennis forgot. Thiem finally ended the thread title by winning the US Open in 2020 and then Medvedev won it in 2021 but since then it's been 1980s-born Nadal and Djokovic and now 2000s-born Sinner and Alcaraz winning every slam.
