Being that my parents liked ex-Yugoslav comedy troupes which i didn't understand, and I liked the simpsons which my parents didn't understand, I always appreciated Mr Bean as being comedy that we could both share and enjoy. Certain level of genius to create laughs without saying anything.
To be fair to your folks, ritual flaying of Croats is an acquired taste.Being that my parents liked ex-Yugoslav comedy troupes which i didn't understand, and I liked the simpsons which my parents didn't understand, I always appreciated Mr Bean as being comedy that we could both share and enjoy. Often voted the most emotional scene in UK television. That last scene in Blackadder Goes Forth is heartbreaking.

Clearly they haven't seen Mr Bean after his car gets crushed by that tank.

Agreed. If anyone's gunna start watching Blackadder, for a better first impression, start from the from the 2nd season, because the first season was quite different and nowhere near as good or funny.
Several changes were made for season 2 which, in my opinion, resulted in a much better show. Atkinson was replace by Ben Elton as one of the 2 main writers. Blackadder's character changes dramatically, basically from a wimp to the cunning schemer he's better known for. Stephen Fry joined the cast as Lord Melchett. And Hugh Laurie joined, but only for 2 episodes, then was a primary cast member in seasons 3 and 4.
