You won't get the chance to, there's no way in hell Dogs pass on him. I usually hate definitive statements like that about the draft but I will eat a shopping bag full of ants every day for the rest of my life if we pass on Smith in this scenario.

Erm, no!

Jordan Clark is still on board at our first pick, and fills a genuine need for the club now and in to the future. With all the mids we would have liked at our first pick off the board (damn you Richmond), Clark is the clear draft choice at the Lions first pick.

There are "rumours" that internally, the club rates Clark very high on it's draft board, and unless Jye Caldwell fell to our first pick, I can't imagine a realistic scenario that the club passes of Jordan Clark if he's available at our first pick.


Secondly, Gold Coast swoop in and steal Lions fans favourite and sentimental draft pick in Tom Berry just before our second pick. Lions fans would genuinely riot on the Gold Coast board if this were to happen.

At our second pick, Fraser Turner is a little bland. Especially when Sydney Stack is also available, and looks to be a much more skilful player. The club has built up a very strong off field support department for players under Swann, Noble and Fagan's leadership, with current player Allen Christensen putting in a lot of work with the Indigenous players at the club.


It's funny, while there is great sentimental support for drafting Tom Berry from Lions fans, there is none towards Cam Rayners best mate Curtis Taylor. With Jack Bytel still on board at our third pick, and still no bid on academy prospect Connor McFadyen, now would be the time for the club to add an inside midfielder bull. The club has built up a very good medical and fitness team, and us fans (and our recruiting department) have very high confidence in them to work their magic with injured players.


Pretty sure the club would be wrapt to get three live draft picks in, before having to match a bid on Connor McFadyen, so big tick their.

If the club feels that it's highly unlikely for a bid to come on academy prospect Keiden Coleman in the National Draft, they might pass on our fifth pick with the intention of picking up Coleman as a academy selection in the Rookie draft, but as we saw last year, the club would be just as likely to draft Coleman with our last live pick in the National draft.


Sorry D_P_S not a fan at all of the Lions first three draft picks here when we consider who is still on board at each pick.

I was expecting a few miffed supporters especially yours :p I rate Butters ahead of Clark simple as that, I’m a fan of your list as a whole so I’d like to go best available in my own view but factoring what the club said they want to look for had me thinking. Stack would be best available but could be a risk, It’s fine to feel confident of retaining him and you feel the club can support his off field issues but regardless it is still a risk and I feel someone like Turner who honestly isn’t far off in quality imo would add nice outside depth and could pair really well with McCluggage on a wing.

Taylor is the one I’m most worried about but in this case I go back to my view that your team has a good list balance already and picking a player like Taylor with good upside at this point makes sense especially with the bonus of helping to regain Rayner, against not saying it’s an issue but the peace of mind in keeping your very top tier talent can’t hurt.

Bytel ahead of Rowbottom would have been my preference but can't really complain.

I'd be happy with Butters and Taylor at our first two picks. Butters is a ripper and would suit our game style well. He gets the ball moving quickly everytime and nearly always finds his target. We could definitely improve our delivery I50 and he'd help with that. Would be an upgrade on Lewy Taylor in that role imo. His tackle pressure is certainly better.

Curtis Taylor would compliment our forward line well. Outside of Rayner, who will eventually move into the midfield you'd think, we don't have anyone really strong one on one up there. And our set shot goal kicking is a concern. Those two things are two of Taylor's strengths, so he'd be a nice fit. Being Rayner's best mate is just a bonus.

Getting a third pick in before McFadyen is bid on would be great. I'd hope wed grab one of Stack, Bytel, McKenzie or Kennerly before Fraser Turner though. Like your work though DPS .

You can disregard Grundy in that case, in terms of 2 Perth players i wouldnt have thought you have had many talented kids drafted from WA wanting to return home and i think recent history suggests your club will take the best talent available regardless of state.

If it was Jones and Clark would you feel the same? Those picks come down to my personal preference and I don’t factor in how the general consensus views their draft range.

The others are compensating for something, well thats what you should tell yourself.
 
Not bad DPS. I think King is the most likely for us if Rankine is gone.

Bytel doesn't really suit a need as we have too many one paced inside mids, but I can still see us taking him if he is there as he could be the steal of the draft if he can get his body right.

Don't know a lot about McDonnell but sounds like he definitely fills a need for us.

Looks like we will have to use 66 though and possibly even our pick in the 70's.

Will Hamill i think is a good fit if he makes it past Melbourne and yeah Bytel is pretty much too good to pass up at that point imo, McDonnell is a goal kicking wingman who tested under 3 seconds for the 20m sprint, ill go into more detail on him in my club review.

I might include a few players that i think are stiff not to be drafted and you can take your pick from that list for those later selections.

We won't be passing those late picks DPS

We will be taking 5 at the draft. We've moved Kyron Hayden to the rookie list as well in the last 24 hours to clear up another spot, meaning there's irons in the fire late in the draft, or they may have got wind of a Crocker interest in the MD, but may still want the other 2 x targets they have later in the draft.

This was done before i heard the news on Hayden but even then you could easily slot in Crocker late.

I'd be happy too, even though at the first 2 picks there are others who I could equally be happy with.

The overall negative for this draft is that a small/medium forward would give it a better shape, especially with both Stocker and Sparrow. I don't think we are as desperate for inside mids as some think, despite the loss of Neale, so for me, one more will do.

In retrospect someone like Sturt, McHenry or Butters would have balanced nicely for me, or a hope that Hill is available.
