Plowman, Marchbank, Docherty, Williamson, Newman.... I am sorry, but I would prefer another midfielder, winger or small forward compared to a play making defender.

Compared to our midfield unit of

Walsh, Dow, Cripps, Curnow... crickets...

or our small forwards of

Cunningham..... crickets......

Now if the vision is Gould moving into the midfield, then I am all ears.

I agree Gould would make our team stronger, but Maybe a Flanders would work better? Adds to our midfield depth and also adds to our forward depth?

Robertson... adds to our inside midfielder depth and also adds to our leadership group as a quality individual.

Taylor, certainly adds strength to our forward unit.

I do love Gould, I just think his size and position is rather filled at the moment and would require someone like Plowman or Marchbank to be removed.

Adding Taylor, Flanders helps to remove someone like Gibbons or Polson or some other random small forward we attempt to fill.
Flanders was the other I considered actually haha

Not sure about Plowman and Marchbank as play makers, Williamson has shown promise but he isn’t established yet and Docherty can’t get on the park but he certainly fits the bill.

Forwards I think are the main concern but for your mob I think another potential leader and tough nut down back like Gould could really fast track the move up the ladder, I can’t see many players like Gould later on and I think more mids and forwards could be found later or even with your second pick.

What happened to SPS, O'Brien, Stocker, Fisher, Setterfield and Kennedy?

Why would I be concerned about GWS losing a quality player and then drafting one from their academy.

Quite frankly I'm concerned for GWS losing Coniglio and Jono Patton. Plus probably losing recent draftee Aiden Bonar as well. Hardly fair on clubs like GWS who continually lose their top players to raiding Vic clubs.
I think it's on the clubs to create an environment that players aren't going to want to leave even if there are significant offers from elsewhere, which we've done fairly well imo with Kelly and Greene choosing to stay up with us. Cogs is a massive loss for us no doubt, but Patton and Bonar aren't massive losses, especially when Patton would be on 600k and can't get a consistent run at it with us

Is Cogs going?

Yeah, I am aware that about Patton and Bonar.

Is it just me, or does Hayden Young remind anyone of a slightly taller Liam Duggan? That kick of his in the final round is mentioned a lot- I’ve seen Duggan hit that kick on occasion, with a similar kicking action.

May just be me, and just the one game I watched but watching him run around they did seem very similar. Duggan has progressed nicely now he’s settled in the HB line and we’ve stopped trying to make him a midfielder.

Interested in anyone’s thoughts.

Like Duggan I think Young is best as a defender, I’ve seen Young play in the middle and he doesn’t look natural there to me.

interesting to see you have the bombers going with a ruck at their first pick

Is that because you expect Draper to leave or best player available?
I agree we need another developing ruck but i would upgrade Draper and take one as a rookie personally.

As an aside, can you describe Nick Bryan and Dow as players?

Have you watched English at the Dogs, and Dow at Carlton?

What happened to SPS, O'Brien, Stocker, Fisher, Setterfield and Kennedy?

Yeah they are options.

SPS - Looks more at home forward of center.
O'Brien - Winger not really inside player
Stocker - Who knows at the moment.
Fischer - I personally think he is too small to be a solid midfielder.
Setterfield - Work in progress, but probably the most likely of the list.
Kennedy - I am not sold on him making it long term.
JSOS - Now this is our added inside midfielder in my eyes.

Still, a midfield needs a lot of depth. I think most true team structures are 4 forwards, 4/6 backs, 1/2 rucks and the rest midfielders.

Plowman, Jones/Levi, Marchbank
Docherty/Simpson/Williamson/Newman, Weitering/Levi, Thomas

Just not sure where Gould fits into that squad.
I feel that we would be adding top line depth to a line that is rather solid if not amazing.

Where someone like Flanders there is plenty of spots for him in our team, I also think he has Gould like ability to impact at AFL level from day 1.

I would really love Henry with Adelaides pick, I think he is a jet. Great kick, ability in the midfield and quick.

Anyway, I doubt many clubs would complain having to accept Gould.

Out of all the players I saw this year if you had to choose a kid to play Afl tommorow you would pick Gould

No Schoenberg....Oh Dear.

I see Harry as a kid you want to select mid draft and then be very happy with the upside from his ballwinning ability than select early.

Yeah I see Carlton as having a huge need for running mids. Outside wingmen, general running mids, gut runners. There are some spread out throughout this draft worth a shot

You have to assume Simpson and Thomas are done sooner rather than later, Williamson can't get on the park, and of the remaining smalls only Docherty is a damaging kick, unless someone like O'Brien is recast as a half-back. There's surely room for another efficient outlet if Gould is best available though.

He certainly does look AFL ready, but you should not draft for today but long term.
Flanders certainly looks AFL ready in many regards.
Anyway, it is splitting hairs with regards to Gould, I just don't think we need another defender and would prefer to fill midfield and forward needs first.

I think this is spot on. Carlton needs runners and a running half back that can break the lines would be great. Williamson is the only guy at Carlton of this type and has back problems.

No more key position players, no more big midfielders, just want guys, whether medium or small, that have good pace, good agility and can run all day. That’s why Sam Walsh was a great pick for Carlton.

From the top 30, a list of the best ball carrier types would be good. Half back runners, wingers.

Ok so this what Fagan wants from our wingers. Anyone available at our first or second pick that meet the criteria?

The quotes are taken from an article on the club website, talking about Mitch Robertson re-signing.

“Wingers are very much involved in stoppages these days so you need your wingers to be tough, he is a guy who was a natural inside player,’’ Fagan said.

“The other thing you want your wingers to be able to do is to run back and help defend, he is a brave player and his willingness to fly in the air in front of the forward is important for us.

“And he is working off his opponent and going forward and kicking goals.

Fagan's winger sounds like a Brownlow medallist.

Just a two-way runner.
Who wins contested ball, has aerial presence and kicks goals. Good standards to have and I think contested ball and running is basically non-negotiables for wingers in 2019 but the whole package would take having top 5 draft picks on either wings.

Only if you want it all at an elite level. He's talking about Mitch Robinson after all.

Probably goes to show what an underrated player Robinson has been over his career. Think a lot of clubs would be happy to have such a defensive minded winger that can scrap like he can and kick 20 majors a season.
