For better or worse, history suggests we dont really give two shits about home state, I'd hope this year, with three legitimate top 10 WA talents we take that extra bit of safety and go localIt depends on the rest of the pool and what’s on offer, do you ignore an elite local talent for a needs based pick?
it’s a tough one, for example Essendon are stacked for key defenders aswell and have nga prospect Brand to come in aswell so with a top 5 pick it would be a tough decision to pass on an elite talent despite not fitting the needs but there comes a time I guess where you have to bite the bullet and just go the needs based option early.
A lot of clubs will go with best available talent with those high end picks, you also don’t know for sure what the squad will look like in 3-5 years time, Essendon would have felt comfortable with a forward trio of Daniher/McKernan/Stringer but when the big piece is injured or wants to leave then your left with a big hole to fill.
Ok I’m here to melt.
Probably not.Have enough Berrys you reckon?![]()

Probably not.
We could genuinely start three Berry’s in our midfield in a few years time, in such a scenario.
Is there one?Might have to look for some young ruckman with the same surname![]()
To be fair not many key defenders in the game are elite kicks, an elite interceptor though with the athleticism to play on talls and smalls.I'm not comfortable with DGB at 2 (or any KPD) unless they are an elite kick. My understanding is he is not.
Naughton was a very iffy kick but would definitely be considered at pick 1 in a redraft.I'm not comfortable with DGB at 2 (or any KPD) unless they are an elite kick. My understanding is he is not.
Ok elite is probably asking for too much, very good would suffice. To be fair not many key defenders in the game are elite kicks, an elite interceptor though with the athleticism to play on talls and smells.
I contest he was an iffy kick. His kicks had a bit of loop and his action was a bit strange but hit the target more often than not. I said as much before his draft.Naughton was a very iffy kick but would definitely be considered at pick 1 in a redraft.
You could make this argument for any position though really, think the spread would end up leaning more towards top end draft selections if you looked at the whole leagueI think KPDs can be and often are found later in the draft. Gov, Andrews, Hooker etc. I don't think you need to splash a top 3 pick on one.
I agree with your first statement (not so much for KPFs) but not sure your second holds up.You could make this argument for any position though really, think the spread would end up leaning more towards top end draft selections if you looked at the whole league
I’ll give you 3 smalls and 3 mediumseDPS - Who are the best 2 or 3 small\medium forwards and where do you expect them to be drafted?

Andrews played as a key forward as a junior, and was moved in to defence by Leppitsch.I agree with your first statement (not so much for KPFs) but not sure your second holds up.
Off the top of my head (plus research their draft position).
Jonas - Rookie draft 16
Andrews - 61
Frost - Rookie draft 1
Frawley - 12
Moore - 9 F/S
H.Taylor - 17
Henry - Rookie draft 16
Hurley - 5
Howard - 56
Carlisle - 24
Tarrant - 15
S.Taylor - 28
Davis - 10
Aliir - 44
Weitering - 1
Grimes - Pre Season draft 2
Astbury - 35
Lever - 14
May - Zone
McGovern - Rookie draft
Barass - 43
Hamling - 32
Pearce - 37
Logue - 8
Talia - 13
McAsey - 6
Probably missed some important ones. Weitering (whom I think is a jet but is also the complete package), Hurley, Logue and McAsey the only ones taken in the top 10. Feel like 10-20 is the sweetspot but still plenty of quality later in the draft.
Solidifies my position, no way I take a defender at 1-5 unless they are complete like Weitering, whom I don't think has a noticeable weakness. Doubly so in our case since we have already used a top 10 on Logue. Two top 10s for KPD is overkill.
A lot also depends on each years draft crop.I agree with your first statement (not so much for KPFs) but not sure your second holds up.

Sure, but the fact remains that the Lyons got an AA defender with pick 61 which is all I was arguing.Andrews played as a key forward as a junior, and was moved in to defence by Leppitsch.
Hipwood on the other hand, played as a key defender as a junior, and was put up forward because we had Andrews in defence.
Clearly it doesn't, which was the whole point I was making. The only hard and fast exception I would make is Weitering. Even Hurley I don't think is better than many on the list taken later.A lot also depends on each years draft crop.
Still a bit to play out with local lads O’Driscoll and Trew, they could firmly enter top 5 calculations with a strong champs if we get one held late in the year
Finally got around to watching this match on the trusty Digital Pass. That second quarter was certainly something, looked a little like Eddie Ford out there. Clean hands at ground level and in the air and seemed to hunt the ball with intent. Hopefully he can back it up this week.Caleb Poulter wowee
