For better or worse, history suggests we dont really give two shits about home state, I'd hope this year, with three legitimate top 10 WA talents we take that extra bit of safety and go localIt depends on the rest of the pool and what’s on offer, do you ignore an elite local talent for a needs based pick?
it’s a tough one, for example Essendon are stacked for key defenders aswell and have nga prospect Brand to come in aswell so with a top 5 pick it would be a tough decision to pass on an elite talent despite not fitting the needs but there comes a time I guess where you have to bite the bullet and just go the needs based option early.
A lot of clubs will go with best available talent with those high end picks, you also don’t know for sure what the squad will look like in 3-5 years time, Essendon would have felt comfortable with a forward trio of Daniher/McKernan/Stringer but when the big piece is injured or wants to leave then your left with a big hole to fill.
