At some point there has to be some effort to restore some integrity to the competition, it just can't be about who the AFL determines is going to be gifted the opportunity through short-sighted errors of judgement. I think Crows should try and abuse the system as much as they can get away with (within the rules), because everyone else is. I think if we start to bail out strong clubs that have made bad calls then we might as well pack it in as a sport and it can just be a farce like Wrestling with predetermined outcomes for entertainment purposes only.

If clubs don't bid on Campbell and Mcinnes before Sydney and Pies first picks to keep them honest they are idiots. campbell is top 5 and Mcinness is top 10 so win win.

With Rampe and Hewett now done for the season as well as everyone else we're missing, Adelaide will have to bid on Campbell to do that to us because we're looking pretty solid for 17th

My only caveat would be, if you do something else with it, apart from trading up to pick 1, you’re likely sacrificing next years first round pick to pay off a draft deficit.

It's hard to get a read on the situation without knowing if lists will be cut and where Jamara gets a bid.
And few on our board are hoping we trade it for an established player. If we get something coming back and perhaps trade a future second we should be able to find a way to cover the points.
We could also look to trade this year's and next year's first for an early pick this year.
To be honest the most likely outcome is that we do trade it for more points but any trade there will also be dependent on how many live picks we take to the draft.

One current theory is that we have a couple players likely to be traded this year, which will bring in points. Don't think we've been linked to anyone so have no idea what happens with our 1st, but McLean is being chased by the Hawks, and Schache by the Pies, according to a few word of mouth sources (ITKs, people IRL, etc.). Between the two of them, plus our two thirds we already hold, we'd have enough points to match a bid without our 1st rounder. Of course, if either remains or if any trades involve a player back our way, then it gets more complicated.

Either way, I highly doubt the Dogs will factor into the top end of this draft other than JUH. I can imagine Port or Collingwood could be interested in our first pick given it should come before their FS/NGA kids

Yeah I'm quite familiar, I just probably wasn't very clear when I mentioned not having to use our 1st to match. I meant we'd have the option to trade for a player or future pick/s if we accumulated enough points later in the draft.

On the one hand, with list sizes likely reducing, I would expect us to only bring maybe 3 live picks to the draft. On the other hand, with only 3 live picks, and JUH likely to be bid on in the top 5, we'd need some fairly hefty points attached to each pick, or else risk going into a deficit. Especially since we have Raak and Macpherson to consider (Raak could be bid on in the late 2nd or early 3rd round, whereas Macpherson will hopefully be free to match). Could mean we aim to bring in 4-5 new players through the draft, with 4-5 picks being swallowed by JUH and Raak, then take Macpherson and a couple of late picks at the end.

Either way, I don't think we're necessarily locked into trading our 1st for points. We have options, just depends on what happens with guys like McLean (Hawks), Schache (Pies), or even someone like Lewis Young (SA teams) who could all attract 2nd/3rd rounders if they head out

From what I've seen of Brander he looks like more of a flanker than KPP.
