eDPS What is the word on our two academy boys this year, Eyre and Brand?
Brand is the more highly rated of the two at this stage, Twomey has him in his top 25 so that usually suggests a few clubs might have him there aswell. Eyre has less exposed form and this would have been the year for him to really show his Potential as Calders main key forward. Certainly expecting Essendon to get them cheaper than what they would have been if they played a full season.

Random question but Campbell averaged 15 disposals in the NAB League last year and 12 disposals in the U18 Championships. Admittedly he was underage in both those years but even so they are not great numbers. What are the chances that he is able to increase his averages to closer to 20? How often has he gotten 20 disposals or more as a junior?

Think he could for sure and he didn’t really spend much time in the midfield at NAB League level either.

Are you picking Thilhorpe or Luke Jackson?
If I had a choice from their draft I’d go with Thilthorpe but Jackson has impressed me at AFL level as a forward so it’s very close.

I doubt to my eye there's a more damaging player per possession in this year's draft than Braeden Campbell?

Interested in your take on a SA player I really rate that seems to be the forgotten player of the SA contingent currently Jamison Murphy?
Like his smarts and skill but is 180 and looks to lack a yard of pace which doesn’t help his cause. Also plays best down back and he might struggle to play on the quick small forward at AFL level. A solid pick but not top 40 for mine.

Yeah I'd be interested in him mainly with a later pick of course, Mani Liddy another SA lad I wouldn't mind with a later/rookie pick either

Have heard one of the gc kids not listed above has been tracked by 6 AFL clubs including your own , also Reeves is one to watch as well. I rate Lake but just think that he will go in the open draft as technically he is not an NT player atm
Joel Jeffrey also being watched closely by other clubs as he has said on many occassions that he is not sure if he will nominate his gold coast option or go into open draft.

Swans put a lot of work into Jackson last year, I think Thilthorpe will be looking good to them.

I think this is the draft that the Swans go for a KPP. I doubt Thilthorpe will get past Adelaide's pick, but if he does I'd expect us to snap him up, otherwise I'd tip us for Denver Grainger-Barass or Logan McDonald. The last few drafts have got us covered for mids, Stephens, Warner, Rowbottom, Florent, we've got Campbell and Gulden via the academy. Blakey, Heeney, and Mills are cycling through there at times. We could use a top level big bodied mid but I suspect we'll target somebody like Constable via trade rather than picking somebody up in the draft when there are KPP's that are elite and fit our needs.

I reckon you’ll get McDonald.

Saw an article recently on father son charlie Mckay, is he rated by any clubs, or more just getting attention because of his dad.
He played pretty well in practise matches at the start of the year, I got to watch him but I had so many players to watch that I couldn’t get enough on him. He played though the midfield and looked smooth.

Those practice matches have become very important.
Always good to get to practise matches, never know if a player that plays in them does a season ending injury and you can’t see them play for the rest of the year.

Anyone who doesn’t think they are worth going to might start to change their tune now ;)

Ed, with the restructure of the talent pathway will this be the end of the over-ager being given the opportunity to give it another crack for whatever reason, injury etc or players like say Jordan Butts and Isaac Wareham that looked to have AFL attributes but just need a bit more time and development?

I think it will work out the same as it always has, it’s now a 19s comp but I don’t think it will change how the best squads line up each week and players like Wareham who missed out will be in the exact type of position they would have been regardless.

Might get difficult for some though because you would expect they would need to be supporting themselves with schooling done or with the uncertainty over whether they had a future in the AFL Uni might beckon?

How many Vic kids find themselves in that position already?

Last year, every kid we drafted finished school in 2018, and had to wait a year to be drafted. I know the two WA lads had part time jobs, as well as going to Uni.

I’m not sure what rules the NAB League will require for 19 year olds, but I imagine more 19 year olds will play another year. Especially if we see list cuts, and fewer kids drafted each year.

And I can only see this as having flow on effect of more 19 year olds being drafted in the future, which will mean fewer 18 year olds drafted, and therefore returning to play as a 19 year old.

And if the VFL essentially turns in to a development league, fewer 19 year olds will get a run there.
