More chatter in the media about trading pick #1. Maybe it's always like this and I haven't had reason to pay attention to it before, but I can't help think it is a bit more intense than in previous years.

People saying we need to draft particular players need to take a step back and take a closer look at our list.

Even with the 12 back we are missing good players at every position.

We take best available with our top picks. Midfielders, Rucks, Key Position, whatever they are we take them.
Pick 1 is Brodie v McCluggage for me. I lean towards Brodie but i see lots i like in McLuggage. Enough to potentially offer our 1st next year plus a sweetener to the Dockers for their 3rd (perhaps Howlett if the WA teams are still interested).

If we trade it and miss those two, then i go with a forward (Marshall if he is there at 5-7) and the best mid available with the next 2 picks (15-17 and 19).

I liked what i saw in Ladhams last year. Haven't seen anything this year, but he has height and a willingness to contest that we can work with along with Nyuon. In the meantime, we have Berger, Belly and McKernan to carry the ruck load.

Im predicting another lowish finish in 2017 as we integrate the players back. So another top 10 pick is on the table.
If that is tradeable for Prestia, O'Meara, Crouch or Mitchell, that's a good win. Perhaps need to top that up but there are enough Vic kids looking to come home.

Howlett to WA talk has dropped off. I was hoping we could get a look at Lamb, Langdon or Crozier for him. I see him as surplus to needs given the improvement in Laverde and Langford, plus the likelihood we will rotate Zaka, Parish, Stanton and Watson forward.

Hibberd to Dees seemed a foregone conclusion a few weeks ago. Now I'm not so sure.
He's worth more than a 2nd round for me and would expect 2x 2nd rd picks from the Dees for him.

Our under 25 Best 22 IMO (discluding Brown, Kommer, Smack, Dea, Michael, Grimley):

FB: Ambrose - Hartley - Ashby
HB: Gleeson - Francis - McKenna
MF: J Merrett - Z Merrett - Colyer
HF: Laverde - Langford - Redman
FF: Fantasia - Daniher - Walla
OB: Nyuon - Heppell - Parish
IC: Long - Wallis - Edwards - Hams

For me it's pretty clear we draft a KPF, a ruck, a KPD and a couple of big bodied inside mids
May I ask why you discount Mitch Brown?

What would a full rebuild summer look like??

Hurley, Zaka, Hibberd, Goddard traded for as many picks as possible? Plenty de-listed, A few forced retirees.

FWIW Hope those 4 all stay but what could our draft position be if we put them all up for grabs?

The same as the Melbourne Demons when they off loaded all their senior players without anyone to teach the incumbents about preparation.

McKenna and Redman i have high hopes on.

Fwiw, I think the window opens while the likes of Myers, Hurley and Zaka are around.
Which to me suggest we need 3 players:
FB: Ambrose - Hartley - Gleeson
HB: Francis - Hurley - McKenna
MF: Langford - Z Merrett - Colyer
HF: Laverde - ??????? - Redman
FF: Fantasia - Daniher - Walla
OB: Nyuon - Heppell - Parish
IC: Zaka - Myers - ??? - ???

This gap could close in this draft if we were to put next years 1st on the table.

Its a massive stretch, but we could offer next years 1st and a 2nd rd pick we get for Hibberd to Freo for 3(in turn giving them 2 first rd picks next year and some second rounders to work a deal on McCarthy).
1 and 3 for Brodie and McCluggage fills that bench.

Plus, i get the feeling we may land Barrett from GWS for a late pick and Matera from GCS for our 3rd rounder.

Our need for a 60~ goal forward to pair with Daniher is hardest gap to fill.
I don't know if there are any in this draft. If Ladhams or Battle are there at 19 (assuming we don't give it up), they are good options.

1-Brodie
3-McCluggage
19-Battle/Ladhams
plus Matera and Barrett in.

or trade 1 to GWS for Pies 1st and their next 1st rd pick (cats or theirs)
3: Brodie or McLuggage
5-7: Marshall (maybe McCluggage is still available)
13-17: Battle
19: Ladhams

Hurley, Goddard stay. Zaka could be considered "tradeable" for the right price, but don't think we would want to lose him when he's not tagged he can tear a team apart. Hibberd of those 4 is the one that's most "replaceable" if we were to lose him. Also we don't need a rebuild just a restructure. As it stands we have no key forward depth, no adequate ruck depth (McKernan just doesn't cut it) and for the moment at least probably lack a bit of class and polish through the middle and off half-back.

Was it? Maybe I'm just getting paranoid.
Yeah it was.

Hurley = 1st rd pick this year and next from any club (trade 2017 1st rd into 2016 1st rd)
Zaka = 1st rd pick this year or 2x 2nd rd picks this year (early too so we can trade them into the 1st rd)
Hibberd = 2x 2nd rd picks this year (trade them into 1st round)
Goddard = out of contract.

We could net 5x 1st round picks, but its pricey to give up.
i think we could net a similar scenario just by offering up our 1st next year and getting good value for Hibberd should he leave.

I don't know. Sounds like you have high hopes for the entire team.

While aspirations are nice lets focus on winning a final for the first time in a decade before we worry about premiership tilts in 2 - 3 years time.

Reported that we asked the AFL whether Will Brodie could play for our VFL side in the last month of footy, got knocked back.

Guess he jumps up to favouritism for numero uno.
Could be to get a better look at him since he has missed quite a few TAC cup games this year but this well and truly puts him into favourite for pick 1

one and the same.
Win a final and the tilt starts.

until then, as i say to richmond fans, you're just making up the numbers.

I think defensively we structure up very well as it stands (assuming Hurley returns).
Our midfield is growing in depth. Watson, Heppell, Goddard, Merrett, Myers, Colyer, Langford, Laverde, Parish.
We don't score enough to win games, let alone finals.
But we also seem to have a far more astute coach now.

Agree we can't expect to turn our list over and be making a flag tilt in 2018-2019 (as nice as that would be and I be happy to be proven ). Fair enough if we're regularly making and winning finals in that period, but I'm not sure our next real flag tilt will come before 2020. Gotta get the list properly balanced, etc. first and foremost, and you get the impression from Woosha that he's playing the long game not expecting an immediate turn around.

It isn't exactly the same though. I'd agree that winning a final is a step in the right direction, but we'd want to be doing that consistently.

Agree on Richmond they're going nowhere fast.

I agree with you on all of those points, on paper having a backline of Hurley-Hartley-Hooker is fantastic (throwing in Francis' ability to swing that's really exciting).
Midfield depth is definitely improving. Given Watson and Stanton probably only have 1 year left (maybe 2) and Goddard probably has 2 years left in him, and Myers is reasonably injury prone so there's room there for 4-5 younger mids to come in and fill those holes (both inside and outside).
Scoring is obviously the biggest issue as you say, with bugger all key forward depth we're not going to go close to winning a flag let alone go deep into finals while that issue still remains.

Ive always thought that Brodies game will translate to AFL far better than McCluggages but hes stats have been amazing. 37 disposals and 2 goals on the weekend. Crazy stuff. In saying that, Brodie is still #1 for me.
