bit of info from foj to for us amateurs
Pick 1 Essendon

Will Brodie 189cm 82kg Murray Bushrangers

Brodie has many things the bombers need.
Ball winning, inside/ outside midfielder who will provide lots of drive and grunt.
Natural leader and very solid citizen who is a country boy who is acclimatised to the city by boarding at Scotch.
His kicking is solid without being spectacular. His speed average, endurance above average. He has a nice change of direction. He is a tall midfielder who is a marking threat.
Would play round one and be hard to dislodge from the side.

Rationale
Brodie in front of sps and mccluggage. The other two blokes are more talented but Brodie is very good and safer than a Swiss bank. We were smashed by Brisbane in the middle and need more good soldiers. Of the returning players Heppell helps a lot, Myers is injury prone but useful, Watson was declining and may not return, Hocking injury prone and seen best days and howlett is average at best.

However a core of a midfield is developing. Heppell, Merrett, parish, zaharakis and Brodie should be around in three years time when we are challenging to be a top six side. Second pick is likely to be a midfielder again as I don't rate a lot of this years prospects. I am also comfortable that if Hurley stays we can play hooker as a swingman and play tall utilities such as Langford, laverde, Francis and redman forward with Joe Daniher. There are some exciting talls in next years draft.
Pick 19 Essendon Dylan Clarke 187cm 85kg Eastern Ranges

Another tough and strong inside midfielder who has had a terrific TAC cup season and his national carnival was good enough to warrant All Australian selection.
Dylan's number one asset is his ability to win the footy at stoppages. He reads the ball off hands extremely well, he has a strong powerful body and he is very brave and will put his head over the footy every time. He is the best clearance player I have seen at TAC level since Libba. The kid just keeps getting the footy.
He has a strong endurance base that is well above average which is combined with adequate speed. He has a very professional attitude off the ground and will take to footy like a duck to water.
Dylan's kicking is the knock. He has a mechanical technique which looks cumbersome. However his kicking efficiency numbers stack up ok and he will end up like Matthew Priddis an adequate kick. Nothing more, nothing less. Clarke has very good hands and brings outside runners into the game really well. This will be his go at AFL Level. His defensive pressure is at AFL standard which is often not the case for kids coming into the system.

Rationale
I really rate this kid. As i talked about when selecting Brodie, our midfield needs a fair bit of work which should occur in this draft. Watson,Cooney, Goddard and Hocking will all be gone in two seasons. They need replacing and our seconds are not stacked with great replacements. Ashby and J Merrett have not come on. Hams honest but a plodder- Kavanagh and OBrien delisted last year.
I considered Sproule in this spot but I just think our midfield should be our focus and brown can do the job for another year. I also considered another favourite player who I am hoping lasts to my next pick.

meh, the game is about getting the ball and using it wisely with smart decsion making ie. when to create the extra handball or when to kick at goal

Good midielders get the ball and execute, good key position players still need the midfielders to get the ball to them
Should probably get some forwards let alone good key forwards then hey

Sure, historically that's been the case.

Doesn't mean the club won't try. It would be a dereliction of their duty not to try to get us the best deal.
A trade is more likely to occur than not. For a PSD pick, it'll be an overpaid spudnik like Josh Green that is picked up not a jet like Brad Crouch.

Agree that we need to explore ALL avenues, but we aren't going down that path after everything we have been though. Surely?

I hope the club use it as leverage in our trading.

We might not have this weapon for a long time.

Mccluggage with number 1 please. When was the last time we had a mid that could kick goals, Iv watched a few of his games he looks a game changer. Wouldn't mind Crouch but only for 19.

The pre season is saved for players like Jason Tutt & Jedd Lamb. Not prime players like Brad Crouch
Can you offer me an example where a prime player nominated to go to the wooden sooners & a charity trade was done?

Prime players just don't choose to play for bottom sides (here's hoping we are an outlier) , and free agency & player association threats have seen to it that they tend to get their way these days.
