We got Langford (17ish) and Cooney (37ish) for Ryder and Zach Merret (pick 26) for Crameri.
We ended up winning with those trades but at the time of the trade we were given unders which is my point. We could really nail a top 10 pick next year along with another first rounder next year in a good draft for talls. We end up with picks 1,19,25 and a classy player in Salem and next year we have 2 top 10 picks. That would set us up to be a strong side for the next few years with the high end quality we would get in the draft.

Hoping one of those talls are a player like Lobb or a key forward.

I so wish I could travel back in time, tell the club the future and force us to take pick 37 to the draft, but even then picking up Cooney seemed a ******* stupid decision so they very well may have gone through with it anyway.

James Rose or Jack Lonie would have been kicking some great goals for us, I'm sure.

Melbourne would need to give something massive. I read on their trade thread they would offer Salem, their second round and next years first round. Not even worth a response. Laughable.
Too right! The simply can't offer enough for both. Hurley on his own is arguably worth a top 10 pick and a gun player.

Kelvins high risk high reward trade strategy.

Hurls and Hibbo - sayonara. First rounder + second round + steak knives and maybe some swap of picks. Clears up a bit of cap space.

Keep pick 1 and use on Mcluggage. Numbers suggest he's no. 1 but who knows.
Get O'meara - Use the cap space vacated by Hurley and get him for a second rounder or PSD. Not sure this PSD is an option but for sake of story lets say yes.
Get Couch or Prestia with the Hurley pick and maybe some swapping of others.

Sets up the midfield for 10 years. Allows Zaka permament forward. O'meara can play off half back to get continuity and make up for Hibbo's loss. Lineup will look like this imo.

Get Mitch Brown from the Eagles as a free agent and insurance. Injury prone but no need to waste picks.

Baguley Hartley(?) Mckenna(?)
Omeara Hooker Francis
Colyer Watson Parish
Zaharakis Daniher Laverde
Fantasia Bellchambers(?) Tippa

Luenberger Heppell Merrett

Hocking Goddard McCluggage Crouch

Emg: Myers, Langford, Gleeson, Stanton, Howlett, Redman, Brown, Brown, Bird, Ambrose

(?) are positions I'm not sure about and we may be under AFL standard but they have ability and can improve.

Midfield has some serious depth and we can rotate a lot of guys forward and back. Looking finals ready. Just need to snag another free agent the following year to round off the list and push for flag.

Hurley will fetch a 1st and 2nd himself if the 1st rounder isn't a top 10 pick. No chance in getting JOM for a 2nd rounder. I'd be happy to get Crouch or Prestia for the 1st rounder we get for Hurley.

No but I'm talking about elite talent.

Elite employees get head hunted. Likewise elite players get poached and hold a lot of power to leave their employer. In AFL there is no non-compete clause so players actually have less constraints to join rival clubs as opposed to standard employees leaving to join competitors. GWS have tried to play hardball over Cam McCarthy and have ended up being a player short and losing trade value as a result of their stand off. They would have been better off cutting their losses and moving him on last year - given this example other clubs will be even more wary of holding onto a player who wants out.

And then there's the average players and average employees - you're gwilts, mckernans, nahas types and so forth that leave and join other clubs or companies without much fuss. These guys often get a pat on the back on the way out as they're not really wanted.
Where in any of this is there anything that resembles trades or draft picks? That's where the comparison falling down began.

With the talk of Hurls heading to the Dees and Hibbo, what would YOU ask from Melbourne, myself, Jesse Hogan. A proven gun, able to play both ends KPP, All Australian and Michael Hibberd who is elite kick and creates a lot off half back. Is honestly a fair deal.

And from the Dogs, there is not a lot I would like. Jake Stringer would be the one.
Sam Weidemann + picks

Or

Top picks + steak knives like Liam Hullett.

Also; ftr

Melbourne don't have a first round draft pick this year and the time they do Enter the draft at 26, it's likely to be used acquiring Hibberd.

If they are going to trade away next years first + second rounders I want a very good young player as well. Sam Weidemann would do. Good KPP don't grow on trees, yeah, know that, but they want one of the very best in the league for pittance? Yeah, I don't think so.

From the Dogs, I'd be looking at asking for a best 22 + a first round pick. With the likelihood the dogs stay at the top for a while yet, top picks are likely to be in the teens which isn't good enough for a player of Hurley's caliber.

We would want a Luke Dalhause, the Dogs will want to offer up a Clay Smith.

This really is a no - win situation if Hurley wanted to leave

Also, for the rookies, the AFL's light rules on trading away future picks

- Clubs can trade one year in the future only.

- Clubs must make at least two first-round selections in each four-year period. If they don't, they will face restrictions from trading any further first-round draft picks.

- If a club trades a future first-round selection, it may not trade any other future selection from that same draft. But if a club keeps its future first-round selection, it can trade any of its future selections from other rounds.

At the moment, with more rehab on the agenda, Jagar would likely cost us pick 26.

Do like the idea of Mitch Brown from the Eagles on a free.

Would love Brad Crouch but doubt he's going to leave now he is back playing football and good football at that.

Weiderman and picks from the Dees would be pretty good. Reduces our need to draft more KPFs, but I doubt they'd give him up because he is critical to their list going forward. Wasn't the entire rationale of drafting him to ensure Hogan had a good partner up forward and convince him to stay in Melbourne?

If Hurley and Hibberd went to Melbourne I'd be demanding Weidemann and their second round pick and, frankly, I don't see where else Melbourne could go. Given the favour for Melksham last year I think that would be enough (Weidemann represents a top 10 pick both because of where he was drafted and because he is a talented young key forward with a year of development out of the way - he's played a lot of VFL footy and kicked goals).

If we are talking about steak knives or a late pick swap or something to add value, a few guys who play at half back that I like the look of are Hunt and Wagner (and probably in that order). Hunt for his ballistic counter-attack and Wagner because he is very calm under pressure, makes good decisions and is a good kick.

Weideman + future 1st tbh.

Hunt is rated higher.

Not important
Yes the Bulldogs have said they are keen.... Big deal.
The overwhelming consensus from those in the know is that he is staying.

FWIW I've heard from a source within club he is staying and a source that's close to Hurls that this is all BS and he has actually already recommitted until 2020
I would like to meet your source and take him out to dinner

Ideally, yes a future first round pick, but I can definitely live with this year's second round pick given the ASADA bullshit, and our obligations to get players to club of choice, and the overs paid for Melksham last year.

Well ok - if you want a comparison. A corporate organisation may agree to waive a non-compete clause of an employee for a particular contract etc. basically a trade scenario.

But with free agency and PSD players can leave without a trade in any case.

After four years there is a high level of resignation amongst the supporter group. Im sure your source is sincere with his comments, but I've heard it all before. I will believe it when I see it until then Hurley is going.
