Sam reid for Sydney anyone? Missed alot of footy. Tall, good hands can kick goals too. Can see us getting him for pick 19. Unsure how old he is though.
MR AFL LIVE 2! Seriously I think he's cooked. He's always had calf problems now he's missed a whole year. I think he would be coming to the end of a big 5 year deal he and Hurley signed around the same time.

would rather take a punt on a kid at pick 19 and see if they develop into a Gem, you know Darling went at a pick in the 20's as did little Zachary Merrett.

taking Mackenzie, Brown, Ballantyne would be the dumbest thing we could do this trade period. Theyre all coming towards the end of their careers and dont fill a massive need at all. Would rather draft a young kpp in the draft than waste a spot on the list with any of these blokes who will be playing in our VFL side for the next 3 years maximum.

Bombers in box seat for uncontracted star
ESSENDON'S first wooden spoon since 1933 and the impending departure of Michael Hibberd have the Bombers perfectly placed to snare an uncontracted player in the pre-season draft.

It could give them leverage in negotiations with Gold Coast's midfield star Jaeger O'Meara if he chooses to join the Bombers, after saying last week he wants to join a Victorian club.

The Bombers have made their interest in O'Meara known but it remains to be seen whether they are the 22-year-old's preferred destination, with a number of clubs in the mix.

Western Bulldogs midfielder Koby Stevens, who remains unsigned, is one player who has been linked with Essendon while Richmond midfielder Reece Conca could also be an attractive proposition if available in the pre-season draft.

Stevens, 25, returned to the Bulldogs' senior side for the game against Fremantle and adds grunt to their midfield, while Conca has battled injury at the Tigers but at 24 has upside.

With more players than ever unsigned at this stage of the season, the pre-season draft is likely to be more significant this year.

Bombers coach John Worsfold said on SEN on Monday the club would be active in the trading period, identifying West Coast defenders Eric McKenzie, who has a year remaining on his contract, and free agent Mitch Brown as potential targets.

Hibberd's decision to request a trade has also opened up some space in the club's cap, given that Essendon has been forced to offer lucrative long-term deals to retain suspended players.

The pre-season draft was cancelled last season after all clubs declined to take part, but it has been used in the past to claim uncontracted players.

It became less relevant after the introduction of free agency, with players able to switch clubs as delisted free agents if they were not offered a new contract, but it is still used occasionally as a bargaining tool during trade talks.

Players selected in the pre-season draft can also set their own contractual terms.

Former Bulldog Jason Tutt joined Carlton through the pre-season draft in 2015 while Jed Lamb, who is now with the Blues, joined Greater Western Sydney from the Sydney Swans via the pre-season draft in 2014.

Ballantyne doesn't even seem like the type would add value through leadership or mentoring our young forwards
Those defenders seem like a waste of time when we're already going to struggle to fit all of Hurley, Hooker, Hartley, Ambrose and Francis into the one backline

pick 1 and 26 (maybe 37) to GC for pick 4, 8 and Jaegar O'Meara?

We could be bringing in SPS/Brodie/Ben Ainsworth and Todd Marshall/Daniel Venables/McGrath while also adding immediate class to our midfield in JOM.

Would still be able to take a Battle or Kerr at pick 19.

Essendon Bombers debate whether to trade No.1 draft pick

Essendon coach John Worsfold says the door to the Bombers trading the No.1 pick in the national draft remains open in a bid to fast-track their rise up the ladder.

The Bombers finished equal bottom alongside Brisbane with three wins but their weaker percentage – by just 0.6 per cent – meant they claimed the wooden spoon.

The Dons unveiled some fine young talent this season, including Darcy Parish and Aaron Francis, and will have almost a dozen of their best players back next season after serving a year-long anti-doping ban. Worsfold said earlier in the season the club's top pick could be up for grabs, and he revealed on Monday a final call had not been made.

"Knowing now the situation, and the rules of the game with trading and draft picks, and, obviously, the pre-season picks, means that we have got plenty to think about," he said.

"Names like O'Meara that come up, we are, obviously, very interested in but there is a lot stuff we have to do to work out what's best for us going forward to add to our list.

"We have to make sure we use this draft and this pre-season draft to the best of ability to improve our squad and get us ready to climb the ladder.

"You don't know if you are any chance of securing one of those good, uncontracted players or not but once we find that out we can make the call – which way we want to go with the draft.

"Do we want to use our first pick for a kid or is this year the year we add in some more seasoned and experienced players which is going to help us. I have got an idea but I have to work with our list management committee to say: 'Where are we as a club'?"

North Ballarat midfielder Hugh McCluggage, Murray Bushrangers midfielder Will Brodie and Gippsland small forward Ben Ainsworth shape as high selections in the draft.

It would be a brave call to trade for the No.1 pick, although there is likely to be blue-chip experienced talent on offer in what is expected to be a busy trading market this year.

Along with former Sun Jaegar O'Meara, Worsfold said the Bombers would consider out-of-favour West Coast Eagles key defenders, Mitch Brown and Eric Mackenzie. The Eagles' pair, though, would not warrant a first-round pick.

"There are a couple of key defenders at West Coast who look like they have had their positions taken by a young player called [Tom] Barrass. They are players, who know where they sit," Worsfold said on SEN.

"Mackenzie and Brown didn't play a lot in the second half of the year or a lot this year. I don't know where they sit contractually."

One player set to return to the field is Jobe Watson, although the former skipper has not guaranteed this. Worsfold said he expected Watson to return from a long overseas break, including time in New York working as a barista, in the next fortnight.

"He is due back in the next couple of weeks. I will catch up pretty much immediately with him when he gets back and have a chat about how everything is going," he said.

"I have had a couple of messages to and fro since the game [on Saturday]. It seems like he is having a great time. He is still training, he is still finding ovals and gyms all around the world to keep his training program up but he is also enjoying not having the AFL news in his face every day. It has been a good spell for him in that regard. He will come back definitely refreshed."

But Worsfold said it was "hard to be confident" that Watson would play again as the champion midfielder, who faces being stripped of his Brownlow Medal, has yet to officially declare his intentions.

"I don't know exactly how Jobe feels about the game. There is no doubt this game has challenged all the players that have been involved in so many ways," he said.

"They all deal with it differently and Jobe has dealt with it in his own way. I really hope he plays on because I know he can play good footy and I am really confident that if he comes back he will enjoy his last couple of years of playing the game. But that's OK for me to say – he is the one who has to do the hard work to get to that point."

Several of the banned 17 currently-listed AFL players – of which there were a dozen from Essendon – have continued to train together in Melbourne. The majority can return to their clubs on September 13, although Watson – because he opted to play in an international rules match in Perth – will have to wait a further week.

While there were less than a handful of wins this year, Worsfold said the Bombers had still made progress in what had been a challenging season.

"It's a challenge in our industry, and I suppose in elite sporting industry, that we are all so demanding on wins and losses and ladder position. There are so many other ways you can be successful in our game and that's growing people, giving opportunities to young players, and also building the culture of the club and group in terms of their off-field attitude," he said.

"We feel as if we made some really strong inroads this year in those areas. It means we can look back on it and say it was a year where we had a lot of successes."

You look at Collingwood and they target players like Treloar and Adams these are type of players you target.

Sick of us going after players who a ether shit or coming to an end to thier career.
It's not as simple as just targeting guys like Treloar/Adams.

It's not like we went 'stuff Adam Treloar, let's go out and sign James Gwilt instead'.

And let's not forget, we haven't exactly been the most attractive club the past few years.

- We're not trading Pick 1 for O'Meara
- Suns aren't taking one second round pick for O'Meara
- O'Meara's not coming here via the PSD

If he nominates us, a fair deal for both sides will eventuate.

I'd say we'll start off offering Pick 19 (or whatever our second rounder turns out to be) + the Hibberd Pick. After a counter, I'd say we'll then have to include our 2017 second rounder and/or a player.

Without any disrespect: That would be madness.
