Elijah Edwards - Progress ?

Edwards measured in at 163cm last year. Perhaps he has grown a couple of cm but you can't expect that he suddenly grows because until it has happened, it hasn't. When drafting guys like this you take them on who they are, as they are. Not who you hope they will be.

It will be curious to see how Edwards goes against better opposition this year in the TAC and U18 champs this year. All you have to know is that he is not short on talent - anyone who has seen the highlight clips can see that. With Edwards once you see how he moves with the footy in games live your views will change pretty quickly from "he's too short" to "gee this guy can move"

With the new rookie list structure it's pretty easy to find a rookie spot for Edwards.

Thats not entirely true Knightmare. They do all sorts of testing on players now that gives the clubs a fair indication of what height and mass they can potentially get too. The fact that they still have Edwards in the squad suggests they are comfortable with where they think he may get to in relation to the skill and speed he has shown to date.

I was not all that impressed with his kicking in the video. I know hes young with plenty of time to improve......but his ball drop seemed to be woeful. Hopefully he has been sharpening up on this. Most indigenous players have a beatiful ball drop/action (Leon, Lewis Jetta, cyril etc)

Perhaps he's not used to handling a full sized footy? o_O

Well Being a NSW Scholarship Kid he would cost us our Last Pick in National Draft and I think we might do that.

Though we won't know what we do until the Seasons End and how Edwards will go

Even with testing (of growth plates) what's Edwards going to end up at? 167cm? With Edwards it's a case of we know he will always be small. He more likely than not will not reach 170cm or have to assume this until he does or hear some information to suggest he has more growth left.

I don't think too many doubt his pace. And skills mostly sound. No reason for him not to train with the club to get a feel for the professionalism and how hard the senior players train. It will only give him some indication of what will be required of him at the next level and how hard he needs to work if he wants to get there.

My bet at this point is Edwards goes as one of those alternate pathway rookie selections. As I understand it we can fit a second NSW/ACT boy in there so no reason Edwards can't be that second guy.

We have a strong best 22 and really a strong 35-40 deep team now who are all good enough to play senior footy so I'd have Edwards working for a position on the rookie list. If he dominates beyond belief then maybe we reconsider but uou only really need to use that final national draft selection on a NSW/ACT guy if it's a Taylor Walker level talent or a Jarrod Witts who projects as a potential first or second rounder. Edwards at 163cm you'd have to think wouldn't be rated that highly by enough clubs for anyone to really make a big deal about us only rookie listing him and even then he still needs to earn that rookie position.

Well he has to Agree to go on the Rookie List

Hi guys, we had a chat to Elijah on Tuesday and the story is now online - http://magpi.es/W1qLTl Appears to be an exciting prospect. What's more, he's a lovely bloke. Very polite and is loving getting stuck into the training. Looking forward to keeping an eye on his progress this year.

Sounds like the Kid has the Right Mind Set:)

Video Also Coming Luke of Edwards?

Sounds like an absolutely top bloke, didn't realize he was boarding at Scotch, or that he won their B&F last year! Love having good eggs in the team, can't wait to see him develop further.

No video at this stage, sorry Dave. There were some highlights of him from 2010 that we're unable to access at the moment (but it is available on YT - ), and I'll see if we can keep an eye out for him in any training video wrap ups.

the NSW scholarship boys have given us 2 extremes. First a giant in Witts then a midget in Edwards. I think they balance each other out.

Jokes aside. Anyway i have a goof feeling about him.

Thnx Luke, much better coverage from the club this week cheers to all involved.

yeah would be good to see some updated video footage of him, does he play for NSW u/18 champs or ViC with him now residing in melb?

Good question; if he does play in the Champs I'm sure we'll be able to get some footage from it. From memory the club was able to do it with Witts and Hartley two years ago.

He'll play for NSW as Witts and Hartley did.

Living in Victoria doesn't mean you have to play for Victoria. It didn't matter so much for Tipungwuti, Dom Barry and Jake Neade who all represented NT despite playing TAC Cup in Victoria.

Edwards probably wouldn't make the Victorian squad with those tall utility types typically favoured even over the top performing smalls - unless you're a Hrovat level dominator. Even if he did make the squad he wouldn't play every week so it's in his best interests to play for NSW to get games every week.

guys we have to remember. A guy at 165cm has won a brownlow and been the best and fairest of his club on numerous occasions. For the amount of skill and tenacity this kid has, the height issue doesn't phase me at all.

Modern AFL is vastly different to the when that happened... at 165 with a slight frame i don't think he could play modern AFL

As Blaze said, old examples aren't really all that relevant. The game has changed so much.

A more appropriate data point would be the number of players currently who are playing AFL football at sub 165cm. I think that better illustrates his chances.

Not to say he won't do it, but he is a long shot at that height.

Lol I don't think there are any sub 165cm, I would say from 2000 on there may have been a couple.
