the height doesn't worry me as much as the lack of weight. Even if he is fast, clever and all that, defensively he would be a liability as he wouldn't be able to hold his man. At opposition kick-ins all they have to do is isolate him with another player and he would be out-bodied.

I haven't seen him myself but if we picked up up, I would hope he was a super outstanding talent.

To those talking about height. Have a look at Barcelona. They changed the recruiting game in the premier league due to their success with small players. They realised that if you can out-run and out-skill the opposition, height means absolutely f-all. Now granted that they don't mark the ball, but they still have to control the ball when it is in the air. I don't get people who want to recruit players on height. i would rather have a high skilled nuggety Harvey, getting the in and under and blistering away to the next contest than a skinny Paul Seedsman type. Now height is a bonus but it's not the be end of all recruiting tactics and based on our recent recruiting of players, I believe we are now imitating the Barcellona recruitment model. AFL is at an even at a bigger advantage to exploit this tactic with recruiting small, quick, skillful players due to the huge field sizes. If we don't recruit Elijah it will be very little to do with his height.

He would never be allowed near the St Kilda players just in case they are carrying matches...
I wouldn't worry about that. St Kilda seem to be throwing their matches. ;)

AFL is very different to soccer, where the ball spends the vast vast majority of the time on the ground.

Edwards can't find the footy, has no kicking penetration, struggles to hit the scoreboard, is no marking threat, is no tackling threat as he will get shrugged off easily. If he was 10-15 cms taller he would be much more seriously considered, he is a spud though and I would be very surprised if we did take him even though he will come outside the main rookie list

I wholeheartedly agree in regards to Edwards, however I disagree that soccer is different to football in the modern day. Aussie rules relies heavily on spread through the midfield more than contested marking. Height is not a prerequisite, unless of course you're a KPP.

No it's all the same thing.. hordes of male figures swarming to be first to the egg shaped ball and score with it o_O

If you're too small of height and frame to contest the football you don't stand a chance at AFL level. If you can't stick a tackle because you're so small then you don't stand a chance at AFL level. If you are more likely to cure cancer than win a 1 on 1 in the F50 - then you're not going to stand a chance at AFL level.

Totally, totally different sport with different requisite body typologies. AFL = contact and predominantly aerial, Soccer = non-contact and predominantly speed and ground based

Cmon man, really? soccer to AFL in terms of "Height usage to advantage" is no comparison.

Hope we get him.

Collingwood fans will be pleased with NSW/ACT Scholarship holder Elijah Edwards’performance for Vic Metro on the weekend. Despite being a NSW Native, the live-wire moved to Victoria’s Scotch College to further his football development at the start of 2011, winning Scotch’s B&F as a bottom age player, ahead of Vic Metro players such as a Tom Boyd and Josh Kelly. Edwards only had the 11 disposals, but he was lightening quick, set up plenty of excitement in his ability to sidestep opponents with ease, create opportunities, and run rings around the opposition. He’s very much in the mould of a Lewis Jetta type, however at the request of Collingwood, Vic Metro have played him forward this year, rather than on a wing where he has spent the vast majority of his junior career. Edwards is only able to be selected as a priority by Collingwood, who they have committed to. Should the Pies go back on that, he will then be fair game in the draft pool, where he could be picked up by any AFL Club.

He won the scotch B and F because he wasn't good enough to make his TAC cup team so he played every single school game

The fact one is a non contact game and the other isn't makes a pretty big difference imo.

Also the barca mosquito were awesome because of their amazing possession and skill. I'm having real a really tough time equating little Blair to Iniesta tbh :D.

If we were going to steal anything from Barca it would be their pressing defence from a few years ago. I knew the two games are different but their pressing was so awesome that I'm sure if AFL teams analysed it they could take some very useful things away.

There's a lot of pretty cool stuff that can be stolen from soccer like zone defence, organisation and using space imo.

Heights not a great one though. These days the athletic demands are greater than ever imo.

No doubt I played it as a teen for a few seasons when I stopped playing Basket Ball, Soccer on Sunday and u18 Footy fri night then A grade Saturday.

Oh to be that fit again.

I agree that height isn't really that big an issue in isolation. Unless you're using it to win hitouts, or take or spoil contested marks, it doesn't really help much.

However, taller players can usually carry more weight and are often stronger than shorter players. Weight and strength are enormously important in a huge number of contests. So for many players, height only really matters in terms of how it impacts your strength and weight.

You can add the "through ball" to the list too ie players outside of 50 running towards an open 50m to take a mark from the long kick into space.

As a pure small forward I am not as concerned with height. We have enough small blokes who play tall in the forward line with Elliott, Fas etc.

If Elijah can sit at the feet of Trav being double teamed then his speed and agility will be far more important than by his ability to outreach or outmuscle opponents. If he can average 10 possies and kick a goal or two and set more up then he is still worth a punt on for the little price we could get him at in the PSD.

True that, i played soccer for most of my junior days as a sweeper and then played footy as a full back, its amazing how similar the positioning is in the defensive side of both games.

Soccer is not a contested game. Not a good example at all.

How many 200+ cm players play soccer? Should we delist players of a similar size because of this?

And its not all about height, it is about size (e.g weight as well). Our players need to be able to stand up in contested situations, and the less mass they have, they harder it will be.
